The Baltimore Orioles claimed Chris Lambert off waivers from the Tigers Thursday. Lambert was designated for assignment Tuesday after giving up 11 runs on 12 hits over 6 2/3 innings in two appearances with Detroit. He walked six and struck out four.
Word from the Tigers earlier in the day was that Dontrelle Willis had his rehab start at Triple-A Toledo pushed back from Monday to Wednesday due to hip soreness. Now, Willis apparently won’t be starting Wednesday, either. His rehab stint is now on hold with his sore hip.
Meanwhile, just when you figured the draft wouldn’t affect the Mud Hens just yet, it cost them their scheduled Tuesday starter, too. The Tigers designated Chris Lambert’s contract for assignment Monday, presumably to make room for Jacob Turner on the 40-man roster. Because Turner signed a Major League deal, he immediately goes on the 40-man, even though he won’t be pitching in games for a while. We know it wasn’t to make room for Aubrey Huff, because the Tigers announced they moved Joel Zumaya to the 60-day DL for that.
The way things are going at Triple-A Toledo, they might need a pitcher or two from last week’s tryout camp before long. Because they just lost their scheduled starters for the next two nights.
Forgot to mention this in the stories last night, but just to make clear, Chris Lambert will return to pitch Tuesday, with Justin Verlander going Monday on his normal rest. You can make a case that the extra day of rest would help out Verlander after going 115 pitches Thursday, but if they did that, they wouldn’t be able to option out Lambert and bring him back so soon (normally he’d have to stay down there at least 10 days). The reason they can do it in this case is because the Mud Hens’ season ends on Monday. Thus, you get these roster maneuvers.
Clear? Good. I’ll be in Toledo tonight writing on Freddy Garcia’s start, so hopefully you’ll see something on that later on this evening.
Chris Lambert will have his contract purchased from Triple-A Toledo to make the start for the Tigers Tuesday against Cleveland. They won’t have to make a move on the 40-man roster, but they’ll have to send somebody out from the 25-man roster.
