Weather

The sun was briefly out a couple minutes ago, though that didn't last long, and the grounds crew just pulled off the tarp. The cold probably isn't going to affect the game as much as the wind gusts, which could wreak havoc in the outfield.

You know maybe if Magglio would get a haircut, he could catch a ball or two.

I know it's windy (I just had softball practice outside) but this is just plain sickening.

Am I really seeing this?

Better...BUT:

We have a really good team but we have some problems that need to be addressed/corrected.

Magglio would be an excellent DH if he could hit .280 and drive in 90. I say that (and I have harped on this last year, because he has ZERO defensive talents to contribute (other than trotting him out to RF every game)). He is an embarassment to "Kalines Korner".

Ingie takes a bad game at the plate with him into the field. This is a problem because his batting style will lead to horrible days at the plate but we need him to perform like Don Wert or Aurelio Rodriguez defensively.

We do not have any LHB strength in the lineup or on the bench.

We have some slugs running the bases.

Rodney is not a "lights out" kinda relief pitcher that we need.

Grilli doesn't pitch as well as his father did (and that's not saying much).

On the + side Holy Cow-- thank you Sean Casey for having a glove that you can wield as a weapon in addition to your bat.

Robertson got some bat support today.

Granderson had a great day (but needs to learn how to run the bases better--Polanco should have had a SacFly and Grandy was not playing the ball right. Also should have been more aggressive when the ball got away from Overbay later.

Polanco is hiting like a maniac.

Granderson is a star in the making.

OK-- I've vented once again. Pardon me please. This team is so good that it is ainful to watch them self-destruct at times.

Keep in mind that these are 8th inning comments but I think they are still relativley accurate.

k

Finally watching the ring ceremony and all I can say is that we could have used Brent out in the outfield, jeans and all.

I was glad to see Kenny at the park but was Miller pitching today or something? He was the only one that I noticed missing (besides Walker but he'll obviously be getting his next week)

Phew-- I'm at work and have just been watching the gameday updates. I can't speak to the defensive issues but Grilli and Rodney just about killed me... I never thought I'd say this but... I'm excited that Jose Mesa is available after today. Our bullpen's gotta pitch better.

Go Tigers

Squeaked it out.

We have some problems right now at the bottom of the order. 7-8-9 left 21 runners on base today.

JL may have to elevae Monroe in the lineup just so he is not batting back-toback with Inge. They are very similar in style at the plate. If they bot go up against tough pitching or get in funk they can enter the nowhere zone. Both of them together tere is not a good thing.

Here is a vote to get Marcus in the game tomorrow at either of the corners.

I bet ya dollars to donuts--JL shakes things up tomorrow.

With regard to the July 30 game with the Twins last year, that was my birthday...what a present huh?

Got to see the bad part of today's game...The second half. Happy for Nate getting a much deserved win. The team almost let him down. Dan you've touched upon some good/troublesome points. For these same reasons the Tigers will not just "cruise" to the pennant.(although I'm confident they'll be in it) And yes, the "Can'tstanzya" Twins will be in it again.

But before we all get too stressed about today, those were weird conditions out there, and though I'm not that excited about Grilli's pitching, at least 2 of those hits had to be caught! He never should have had to face that many batters. But, bless his heart, Magglio makes a circus catch when the chips were down.

Up 10-2 is when defensive replacements are in order. But who do the Tiger's have to put in the outfield as a defensive replacement? It's always a good thing to have a guy like...hmm say Clevlen to insert. Is Infante reliable as a replacement? Why couldn't he go in. I'm thinking someone who could just cover ground and make catches would be nice. Oh well...Jones came through in typical Jones style. I'm still a believer in his ability to close.

Weird, yes they were but that doesn't account for effort. We saw Magglio casually go after a long foul early in the game that could have been an out if you had someone out there who wasn't so concerned about injuring himself (on top of the lack of skill level). The wind was tough but it doesn't excuse the lack of hustle that we saw in the 8th--nor the infamous Magglio slide (Maybe he played quarterback at the University of Caraccas?)

I must say we might be better off with Sheff out there.

Wonder if Marcus plays tomorrow? They could continue the experiment at 1B and sit Casey--but if the infielders (and every one of them did) throw any into the dirt we can't expect him to dig them out. Casey wis simpyly phenomenal today on the short, long and medium hops.

It will be interesting to see what Mesa can do tomorrow. You can bet Zoom will be ready to go to.

Robertson looked good today didn't he?

Hopefully a southpaw is what the doctor ordered for Inge, Monroe and Sheffield.

Marty, there are no defensive outfielders to insert. Infante would have had an even worse time in that wind. And just like last year, we're stuck with Ordonez out there so we may as well get used to it. He can't DH, that's Sheffield's job. Just look at Maggs as our own version of Manny Ramirez.

I thought they should have tried to move Rodney this past winter. At his age, I don't see him getting any better. He flies open when he delivers the fastball, but attempting to change his delivery might cost him the changeup, for all I know. All those folks who were so uncomfortable with Todd Jones, there's a new sheriff in town. I guess I'll just keep cringing everytime Rodney comes trotting in. At least Jones throws strikes and he usually gets out of any messes he creates.

Casey put on a clinic over there today. How many runs did he save, potentially?

I didn't get to see most of Grilli's performance today. I had the impression they blooped a couple on him? Dan, if it's not Grilli, who would you replace him with? Not challenging your opinion, just wondering what your thoughts are. Colon when he returns? Tata?

Grilli doesn't bother me so much. It's not like we were counting on him for anything other'n holding an 8 run lead, which he did today........(please note sarcasm).

No, what is worrying me, is Rodney. It looks like he has NO confidence, and I wonder how can that be?

Can Polanco win a batting title? Probably not, being right-handed, but this spring he certainly looked like a man possessed, and it has continued through games 1 & 2.

The White Sox starting pitching is a mess. They look terrible. It would be a great time to win about 7 or 8 outta ten, and have them get a little nervous.

Well, today is a win, and like my grandad used to say: "a win is a win"(profound, wasn't he?). If this one woulda somehow been lost, that would have been a serious bummer, for an early season game.

Thank gawd Jones only gave us a murmur, and not the whole heart attack.

So much for the "two strike" approach from Curtis...........lol.

The young man was driving the ball HARD today.........it was good to see.

I was at the game yesterday...does anyone know what the deal was where the BJs were arguing with the umpire about something? It took a couple of minutes...and in that cold, it wasn't too appreciated (brrr)

Was--it might have had something to do with the vendors working the stands in those bright orange coats.

Rich--I prefer Zack Miner to Grilli. I would also prefer to give Jordan Tata a chance. I'm not a big Colon fan.

My real hope there was for Campusano to make it based on performance but the injury squashed that possibility. I would really like to see a couple of guys in the bullpen who don't walk batters every 2 innings. Jurrjens can be that type of pitcher but I don't expect he is anywhere near ready for this bullpen.

Okay, Miner is a good selection, yes. The thing about Grilli, he seems to have good stuff. He'll get two strikes then give up a hit. Get two outs then give up a run. Can't figure it. Bottom line, though, JL likes him and you know what that means. All you can do is root for Grilli to do the job.

I thought Campusano was making the team before the injury. Colon has a splitter, I believe, at least a different pitch than the other guys. The thing is, if Rodney doesn't right himself (and I hope he can), these other guys are going to grow in importance.

Now everybody admit it, when Maggs finally pulled down that windblown drive from Glaus, that was exciting wasn't it? That was like the coaster just pulled back into the station and you survived the ride excitement.
