Fernando Rodney threw his mound session as scheduled this morning. Threw fastballs and changeups for about 10 seven minutes and appeared fine. He's in the OF shagging fly balls in BP now, so there are no obvious problems.
Jason: I know that Rodney has some arm issues now and certainly he has had lots of arm issues in the past. But I have been curious about this for a long time: does he throw any curveballs or sliders? Everytime I have watched him, it seems it's either a fastball or changeup. I realize that a breaking ball is hard for a delicate arm but, on the other hand, he would be absolutely lights out if he could throw a breaking pitch.
Thanks for the update, now if we could just get Cruceta in camp??
I believe he does have a slider but I've never seen him actually use it in a game. He is strictly changeup/fastball.
Jason, thanks for the reports on IRod & Rodney. It is good to hear that Rodney isn't experiencing any pain in the shoulder. Having tendy in any part of the arm hurts like heck, had it myself last spring in softball (alittle different than MLB, of course). Rest is about all you can do with it.
Rich, thanks for the reports. Sounds like you are having a blast down there..good stuff.
p.s. In the last 2 blogs I have seen some new faces join the blog crowd...welcome! Go Tigers!
FYI - Here's a look at Rodney's PITCHf/x data from last year. I believe this didn't start up until June or July. It's a chart showing all of his pitches... it takes a minute to load though.
Rodney does throw a slider. He doesn't throw it as often as he did before the Tommy John surgery a few years ago, and probably not as often as maybe he should, but he throws it.
Good to hear. Thanks for the update!
