After walking into clubhouse today, he said his back is still sore, but that he'll play for a few innings with an at-bat. Unless his back locks up, I don't think he'll let himself miss this.
Exactly what I wanted to hear. Do whatever it takes to get into the game, Polly, then get out of there.
BTW, Youkilis had a similar injury and missed about a week. A strained lat sounds painful to me.
Rich, if you are thinking of the injury Youkilis just had, I am pretty sure it was a quad injury and not a lat. Unless he was hurt earlier in the year too. Either way, yes, a strained lat does sound painful. Hopefully, he gets his one at bat and in typical Polly fashion it is a single to right center to move a runner up.
I'm glad to hear that. It will be a mermory he will cherish forever. JL will need to pull him though and I am sure he will. Might have been better to have batted him 2nd aftr all! With any kind luck he may get to bat in the 2nd and avoid a 2nd inning of defense.
I hope he is ready to play in Seattle. I am surprised at JL's rotation after the break. I guess he really wanted to give JV a break as he is not scheduled to throw until Sunday. That would be the game I don't have tickets for!
Join the club, Dan. I've yet to see Verlander myself. I've also managed to miss Zumuya and Rogers. One more chance this season, though, because I've just gotten tickets for all three games in Cleveland in September. Those could be rather important.
Good game tonight. If anyone was able to stay up till the end, you may have noticed the faces on the players, coaches, and managers in both dugouts in the ninth inning. They wanted this game, and I don't think it had anything to do with homefield advantage in the World Series. Well whatever, I hope we're the team to reap the benefits. We'd just have to get the Series back to Detroit this time.
The game was worth watching just to see Ichiro's inside the park homerun. He sure gets around the bases quickly. Very deserving of the game's mvp.
Did anyone take note of the number of times the camera focused on JJ Putz after JL took him out. Very sober looking face. I don't think he appreciated that move at all. Not that any of us cares, but maybe JL should have left him in to sink or swim. If it was Jones giving up 2 during the regular season, you know JL would keep HIM in. Rodriguez almost blew the save himself. Anyway, it's JUST an exhibition game and the outcome should never decide anything but bragging rights, not World Series home field advantage. That remains a ridiculous move on Selig's part.
Glad to see Dmitri get an at bat, and it turned out to be an important one at that.
Lastly, was anyone really annoyed with the Bonds interview that basically took place during (instead of) Magglio's at bat? Not very respectful of Mags... but typical.
Well, that's Fox for you. All show biz all the time. Cutting away from the game for an interview with anyone is stupid. If I want talk, I'll turn to a talkshow.
Another irritating thing they do is interrupt their own blathering to say something like "there's strike two to Ortiz" when we could plainly see that with our own eyes.
McCarver: By far the best pitcher I ever caught in all my years was Bob Gibson, as Ortiz takes strike two. He was such a competitor, just amazing, as Ortiz hits a weak grounder to Reyes, two down, that I was sometimes afraid to visit the mound, as a beachball gets loose on the field, because he was so locked in, I think I see Morgana, when he was out there.
Buck: Is Morgana still alive? Let's go to Ken Rosenthal, maybe Ken has something on that for us. Ken?
I don't know, maybe we oldtimers are the ones that are off base, just wanting to watch a ballgame. :-)
I'm 40 and right with you, rl. Is 40 an old-timer? We used to turn off George Kell and Al Kaline and listen to Ernia and Paul for the televised games. Yes, they did say what you could see with your own eyes, but you felt more into the game with them. Does that mean I agree with you or not?
I think anyone that can remember the 80s is an oldtime Tiger fan. :-) I felt sorry for youngsters who grew up in the 90s, never knowing a good team in Detroit. I see them at the game all the time now, and do they enjoy it!
I did like George Kell, probably because he was teamed with Ernie when I was a kid. I got a kick out of his homespun Arkansas style of speaking. "He might be gonna make a pitching change" is classic. And I learned the difference between a "steady rain" and a "trash movin' gully washer." He also used to rave about the Maryland crabcakes you could get in Baltimore and, upon my first visit to that city, many years later, that's the first thing I did, have some crabcakes. To this day that remains my favorite dish.
Man, talk about blathering. I'm glad there's a game tonight.
Rich- I'm 30 and can't listen to a Fox broadcast without imagining shoving the microphone down McCarver's throat. I'm not much of a Buck fan either but McCarver just drives me up a wall. I don't need much from an announcer-- basic information like "the movement on his pitches is good" or, he's struggling to spot his fastball are nice and helpful since this info isn't always apparent on television. If they're offering any more, I like to hear things like "this is why Inge is positioned directly on the line or any other pieces of insight that aren't apparent to the casual observer. The only other thing I like is interesting anecdotes-- nobody does it better than Ernie. The problem with McCarver's "anecdotes" is that he just tells you the obvious piece like "Gibson was the most dominant pitcher I ever caught." Really? What a surprise! It would be much better if he told a story about catching Gibson during a no-hitter or in a close game-- perhaps in the World Series when Lolich beat him. ;)
Anyway, I've ranted long enough but my point remains the same: Fox-- especially McCarver and Buck-- does a horrible job of broadcasting mlb games. I think that all age groups can agree on this point. The question remains: why does Fox keep McCarver on its lead team? I don't know anyone that remotely likes listening to him (this includes Cardinals fans).
I hear ya, Brent. I put in that disclaimer about oldtimers because, for the life of me, I can't figure out why Fox keeps those two on board. All I could think of was that Fox gets positive feedback from somewhere. I become afraid I'm an out of touch old curmudgeon. :-)
It's funny, because MLB sent out a series of surveys over the winter that I took part in. Anybody else do that? Anyway, the very first one involved TV presentation and announcers and I of course rated Fox at the bottom. They even took suggestions for game analysts and I suggested Kirk Gibson. It's hard for me to believe that Fox received positive reviews.
Thank God I am not the only one who can't stand listening to McCarver. Buck doesn't bother me so much and might not be bad if they teamed him up with someone else. I would much rather have the "color commentary" guy give me insights into the game rather than talk about where they went after the game the night before. McCarver is always waaaayyyy too pro New York in his broadcasts too.
Let's not forget how McCarver inserted himself into last year's World Series by starting that pinetar thing and feeding the dirt starved media a huge bone to run with. I tried not to let it, but that "controversy" ruined the Series for me.
