De La Cruz optioned to Toledo

The move makes room for Capellan on the roster. He'll work out of the bullpen with the Hens, a sign that he could be back soon and that the club sees him likely as a reliever down the road.

Not a big shock with De La Cruz going down. Like I said I thought earlier it was either going to be Grilli or him Grilli has more experience and Grilli is probably out of options.

Great job Carlos, Pudge, Magglio, Placido, and Justin. They are all deserving. Lets get a win tonight go Tigers.

In the ninth inning tonight, that was as pumped as I've seen these guys since last year's playoffs. They knew this was a biggie. Polanco pounding his mitt, Casey slamming into the tarp going after that foul pop, Jones locked in. It was like a playoff game.

Bonderman was great. The kid Baker was great. I know a lot of folks like a lot of offense, but I'll take this kind of game everytime.

We saw a good reason to play Thames in front of some other guys. He just might run into one on a night when nothing else is working.

Some catch by Granderson, hey?

I've yet to gain a feel for which team is better between Detroit, Cleveland, and Minnesota. This is going to be some kind of race.

Great game last night. I was so tense in the eighth that when Thames sent his line drive over the wall, I was standing up in bed yelling when it cleared. Needless to say, my wife sent me downstairs for the 9th.

As far as the bullpen moves, I agree with most everyone on here-- they have to stop mortgaging the future on their immediate bullpen needs. We obviously need help in the 'pen and it puts us in a terrible negotiating position. If DD would just relax a bit, I think he'd realize that a bad trade is worse than sitting put and letting a better trade materialize.

Marty, I'm still bummed about Maroth getting traded (for nobody) and I'm not sure how to get over it. My father-in-law (a yankees fan) saw Maroth's first game against the mets and called me perplexed. When I told him the deal, he simply couldn't believe that we'd trade a proven major league starter and get nothing in return besides a prospect to be named later.

The comparison that he made was to the MSU-ND game last year (I'm a Spartan grad and still can't let that one go either.) We watched the game together and he simply couldn't believe that in a driving rainstorm with a large lead, MSU was still trying to throw the ball and didn't play their running back that had 118 yards on 8 carries.

I hate the analogy because of the pain that it brings back but I think the same can be said for DD's recent moves. Despite having a team that is near first place and has a solid foundation built for years of success, the Tigers are reacting in a desperate manner to address their bullpen needs. I know my view is different than most but if you had to get three outs, wouldn't you send in Maroth instead of Capellan or most of the other relievers that are available on the trading block?

This is not to say that they shouldn't make trades. I think the Ledezma move was great-- it moved someone who wasn't going to make it as a Tiger for someone with potential and provides them with greater flexibility since McBride has options. I'd like to see more of those types of trades that make obvious sense rather than smell of desperation.

I'm with you on that, Brent. So if anyone cares to subscribe to the Oliver Stone Theory of Conspiracy, try this one for size:

There's JL's good friend LaRussa struggling mightily trying to get by without his injured starters. So we ship him Maroth for a PTBNL. That player turns out to be.....Maroth! Mike has shored up the Cardinals starting rotation while we gain some temporary flexibility to deal with bullpen problems. Ta da!

Now, that must be illegal on so many levels as to make for a pretty poor movie, but hey, it's an off day.

Good thoughts Brent. Reassuring to hear from another Maroth supporter. I'm way too melodramatic when it comes to our Tigers. I'm really not that way in "real" life:-) Rich, I LIKE that theory, and I'm going to cling to it for a while...just maybe... He did get shelled yesterday but the Cards won anyway. So he at least continues with that excellent team wins per start stat. How about Marcus last night?! That was good stuff. Very valuable in my estimation. How many teams have a guy like him coming off the bench? I jumped up from my chair like a kid too. I had to listen to the game on the radio. MLB blackout due to ESPN coverage. No ESPN in this household, we're living in the Stone Age. Granderson probably deserves even more credit, and Bonderman showed why he's the ace. They needed this one. Go Tigers. Off days are great coming off a win aren't they?

On the ptbnl for Maroth. I thought I read that the Tigers get to choose from a list of players that was created at the time of the trade, before a certain date. I would have held on to him. Our young pitchers need more time to develop. I would hold on to our bench guys also(Thames)and move Monroe.

While I agree that it doesn't (yet) look like we got enough for Maroth, I don't think we're acting out of desperation at this point. We've made some incremental moves to try to shore up the bullpen, which is okay with me.

Desperation will be if we trade someone like Maybin to rent Gagne for the rest of the year. I'm pretty confident that DD wouldn't do something like that. I'm just hoping that some of these incremental changes will pan out (and that we can hang in there in the meantime).

matt

Mike was a very popular Tiger and someone many of us rooted very hard for. This has been similar to the Shelton episode last year, except Chris was only sent down, not out.

Since it is a business, I suppose we should set those personal feelings aside, but after I do that, I see someone who may have helped the team. I projected Maroth as improving with age and being the heir apparent to Kenny Rogers, the "crafty lefthander" in amongst all those guys with electric stuff.

We should, however, remember the Jeff Weaver trade from 2002. That trade was hugely unpopular but netted Bonderman, Pena, and German. Pretty good deal in the end. You just never know.
