Sheff appeal

It's scheduled for Friday, but he indicated there's a chance he could get a game dropped if he drops the matter. As of Thursday morning, he wasn't sure what he wants to do. He saw Mets catcher Paul Lo Duca suspended for one fewer game than he was after Lo Duca threw stuff onto the field following his ejection.

"If I get treated like everybody else, then I'll act like everybody else," Sheffield said.

In other news, most everybody appears to be ready to go after the rainout. Tim Byrdak is dealing with some fatigue in his forearm. Zach Miner was back in the Tigers clubhouse after throwing back-to-back outings for Toledo Tuesday and Wednesday. He feels good, but the Tigers are going to wait a couple days to see how his arm rebounds and wait until he's ready to throw. He isn't likely to be activated until at least Saturday.

Also, the game time has been pushed back to 1:20 p.m. No weather delay, but most of the umpiring crew was delayed coming out of Atlanta this morning. Not sure whether it's related to the Northwest issues or not (the Northwest web site shows a 7:10 a.m. flight from Atlanta to Detroit that was cancelled).

Funny how pitchers are developing "tired arms" in synchronization with someone being reactivated off the DL.

"Tired Arm" is kind of becoming a euphemism for "not happy with your current performance" and an excuse for abusing the disabled list.

Why don't they call 3 or 4 folks down from the stands to ump? Lately the home plate umps don't even appear to be watching the ball cross the plate anyway. If they feel energetic they just pump out their right arm and call a strike, regardless of where it was pitched. (Just kidding!)

Granderson has had some difficulties running the bags this year. With nobody out and Sheffield, you gotta be expecting a hard hit pull grounder and know what to do when it comes. Bad play and a real rally killer.

Speaking of Sheff--anyone else notice that he is extremely patient at the plate with no one on? He is pretty jacked up with a guy on third and often swings right away.

Rogers had an exceptionally good game once again. The second time out may be even more indicative that he is "back". Way to Kenny.

Nice to see Polanco take a walk. As good an natural a hitter as he is, a little more selectivity and discipline at the plate and I think he can hit even better.

Sheffield's rocket may just kick start him again. We need the long ball.

It will be interesting to see what happens in the 9th.

I wish the 9th could be like the 7th and the 8th, with Durbin pitching. But it's a save situation now ...

That's one consistent thing about Durbin--he gives up his share of runs, but he doesn't often let a bunch pile up in one inning. Something I'm always afraid Todd Jones is going to do.

Well it's Jones' favorite kind. The 3 run lead save.
Actually the rules state that if Durbin would have remained in the game and pitched effectively for at least three innings-he could be c redited with a save. I'd like to see that scenario myself.

Yeah Dan, that "tired arm" epidemic is running unchecked through the clubhouse. Immunizations! They were having a hard time convincing Robertson to go along, er.. I mean accept his diagnosis. He was certainly looking for a second opinion, but to no avail:-) I missed the game today because of work. I see Polanco got 2 hits and scored twice. Seems as he goes, so goes the offense. What more can be said for Kenny. Looks like Durbin continues to prove his worth. And Jones' easy save must have put you all to sleep. Boy did he NEED that!

That's more like it. Good pitching from the gambler, some timely hitting from Sheff and Guillen, a solid showing from Durbin (I really think he can help shore up the 'pen) and (finally) an easy save for Jonesie. I know the 'ol rollercoaster is gonna keep things interesting but I'm hoping he can turn it around a bit. I hate trading for bullpen help-- its such a fluky way to try and improve (just check out all of Baltimore's "improvements" in the 'pen.) Here's hoping we can get hot and rip off some wins again before the break.

Marty, I wonder if JL was thinking C-Mo might have "tired arm" after not being able to get his glove up on the 3-base error the other night. Maybe "tired legs" or "tired cerebral cortex" will be next!
