Zumaya's injury
Jim Leyland didn't say much on it, but he said the injury was on the top knuckle of his middle finger. Whether it was dislocated there or what, I don't know. Fernando Rodney, who was in the bullpen at the time, said it happened on one of Zumaya's early pitches warming up and he immediately stopped. Not sure how severe the injury is, but Leyland expected they'd have to call up another pitcher for Sunday.
Thanks for the update Jason. I saw him heading to the dugout with the trainer at the beginning of the 8th and wondered what happened. I couldn't tell if it was his side or arm the way he was walking. Let's hope for a quick recovery and that it is nothing serious.
Good game tonight and nice comeback. It was fun watching the Royals fans around me getting upset.

A finger dislocation doesn't sound like that big a deal, but I assume it's pretty bad for a pitcher's throwing hand?
Cross your fingers, Tiger Nation.

Leyland didn't want to speculate on Zumaya's injury, and I shouldn't either, however......I think he may be gone for quite a while. In the first place, I've never heard of anyone dislocating a finger throwing a baseball, but as I've said in the past, it isn't normal for a 22-year old to throw all those 100 mph fastballs. At any rate, it appears to be an injury that may be an inconvenience to most of us, but will shelve a pitcher for awhile. Like a month. Let's hope I'm wrong. I just don't like hearing that there was a "pop" when he threw the ball.
This cast a downer on what had been a pretty good night, all in all. This was a game I thought the Tigers would lose to break their win streak, but they instead pulled it out. Most impressive. There's always a guy to pick the next guy up, such as Bobby Seay tonight (who must have had to warm up pretty darn quick).

That popping sound may be a tendon. If that's the case, surgery may be necessary to repair it. So we may lose Zoom for the remaining season.
I hope I'm dead-wrong about this!

Now another blogger is reporting that Zoom has a dislocated finger & DL'ed. Lopez has been recalled & should join the team on Sunday. 6-8 weeks away sounds a whole lot better than the rest of the season.

Okay I am freaking out, especially since the bullpen has been (with the exception of a few) has been hit or miss, including Joel. I mean I though Grilli was headed in the other direction and he has a shakey night.
Now I know he is in the 15 day DL, but seriously what dos that mean?? How long? Kenny and Vance have both been on the 15 day and obvioulsy it has been a lot longer than that.

well there's a rumor on the yahoo rumor board about the tigers having interest in brian lawrence of colorado, recently released, any chances of picking him up, that then moving durbin to the bullpen or the minors....

The game is 3 1/2 hours away and it is pouring with lightning around the stadium area. Hopefully it will let up and they can get the game in. Calling for 80% chance of rain today, tonight, & tomorrow in KC with strong storms. Could be interesting along with the drive back to Illinois in the weather.

Nobody has any comment on Neifi's HOME RUN???? He unleashed a huge three run jack. I think it's still going. Like, in orbit somewhere.
If these guys keep the hitting approaches they've been using, they will actually live up to their advance billing. And with these pitching injuries, that won't hurt a bit.
Does anyone think Roger Clemens' continual retirements then comebacks is getting irritating?

Beleive me Nefi frustrated the heck out of me last year. But is defense is pretty darn good and I was looking at his lifetime batting stats and he typically is in the 270 to high 200 range. Maybe he can get there. Although he really doesn't get many at bats. GO NEFI that was great yesterday.

Rich, I've never been a Roger Clemens fan, but I find that the older an athlete gets the more respect I have for them. You have to respect guys that last this long. Clemens is smart. At 44 he knows he has a limited number of good throws left in his arm for a season. Since hitting 40 it seems he's adopted this strategy of pitching for a half season (when it counts) and probably getting as much money anyway. He waits to see who will need him, who has a chance, in this case the Yankees, and if they're desperate enough, he'll get plenty of money and maybe another chance at the post season. Doing it this way also prolongs his career if he should want to continue. If he were to get 25 starts with an average of 100 pitches per start that would be 2500 throws. A contract of 2 mil, he gets $800 per pitch. At 4 mil each pitch is worth $1600. Not a bad second's worth of work. I may be way off on this idea but it makes sense. And he doesn't have to pitch in April and probably most of May. Maybe we were wrong about Neifi. He took some real bashing on this blog, myself included. We were just frustrated and angry last year and most of us wondered why Infante was passed over as Polanco's replacement. Neifi has looked decent in there this year. I'm done bashing him, it's time to give him some respect. Now that I said that, he'll be traded tomorrow right? Shelton is hitting .250. He had a good April but has had an awful May so far. But I checked the Toledo stats and he has a decent number of walks, so his OBP is the highest or close to the highest for all the Toledo starters. Good sign if he is working on patience. I may make a trip to Rochester to watch the Mud Hens play the Red Wings in the series that begins tonight. Lastly, Tiger bat patience is paying off. Check out how patient Monroe has been of late. Ordonez too.
