and Neifi Perez gets booed -- twice, albeit lightly. The second time he gets booed as the potential winning run. Not sure if the Ramon Santiago Fan Club made the trip to the opener or not.
And look... it's Chris Shelton off the bench to play first. Oh... what? He didn't make the team?
At least Leyland didn't go with the Thames experiment in an extra-innings game.
P.S. Way to go Rodney, showing off that PFP!
I never thought I'd see the day where Perez would pitch run for anyone.
Is it Wednesday yet?
Well I was down at the game, it was kinda a buzz kill. I have been looking forward to this for so long. Frankly win or lose it was kinda a boring game.
Couln't really see the pitch Rodney threw to Thomas in the 10th from where we were sitting however from people I have talked to that were watching it at home said it was a no doubt strike. It seems that Rodney if a call goes against him he really loses his composure.
Now I am not the biggest Nefi Perez fan in the world but he has had a decent spring training, better than Guillen, but I don't believe in booing your own players. It is really juvenielle.
GO TIGERS
ps. just curious, I was suprised that the Four Tops didn't sing the national anthem today, does anyone know what happened?
is anyone else unable to open Grandersons blog? The error message is telling me that it is forbidden? please advise
GK, I'm getting that message too.
Nice to spend a day watching a ballgame that counts. Bonderman came back nicely, after looking so darned uncomfortable in that first inning. His body language always tells the whole story, he should work on that.
So, I see that Guillen is indeed still the backup firstbaseman. I really didn't think JL inserts Marcus at that point in the game anyway. He still weakened two defensive positions for lack of a real backup, though.
I don't think the home folks should be booing Neifi either. That's not classy. The guy will probably be gone before the end of May anyway.
I can already see that Rodney is again going to drive me crazy all year. How many big league pitchers can't control their fastball? I'm already on record as saying I've never shared most people's high opinion of him. Re that fielding play he made, looked to me like he threw without really looking and just lucked out this time.
Yeah I know, my day to be the Muppet Heckler. :-)
I see that Granderson has a blog on ESPN now. Is that maybe why his MLB blog is not accessible? He doesn't need to have two blogs anyway. I can see the headlines now:
Granderson Injures Wrist from Blogging
Zumaya Injures Wrist Playing Guitar Hero
Ty Cobb Injures Wrist When He Rolls Over in Grave
I hear ya Rich. I like Rodney and also think he has a decent repertoire of pitches but has very little command.
I also think guys like him, Zoom and Verlander really need some guidance from behind the plate.
When Rodney comes in I wait with baited breath as I know it is a distinct possibility there will be let down with 2 strikes on the hitter, Often enough, it comes in the form of a hit-by-pitch, which drives me nuts.
I thought we were lucky on that nubber in front of the plate yesterday too. The batter looked safe on 2 counts. Guillen's foot had to come off the bag plus he actually beat it out. The throw was a lucky one but I have to give Rodney for not hesitating with it- he turned and gunned without any trepidation whatsoever. I thought he would have been for more tentative the first time he had to handle a ball like that.
All in all, the team didn't look good yesterday. I hope we can get half of the big right handed bats working most games. Monroe was down right brutal and that was a discouraging sign to me. He looked more like Queen Elizabeth waving weakly at the crowd instead of a feared slugger taking a mighty rip at the ball. We are going to have to deal with some outstanding RHP this year and C-Mo will have to be able to handle these guys. That certainly points out a weakness on the club--no LHB support on the bench.
Pudge didn't look good either. Guillen left 5 runners on base. One extra base hit in the game and our powerful lineup will need to improve that. One game a season doesn't make but is was certainly disappointing to see signs of nervousness or jitters on a club with post-season experience and aspirations.
I think they will come out firing on all cylinders tomorrow.
I wonder what the 6th thru 10th would have looked like if Mesa wasn't out.
I missed the opening day game and festivities. Sounds like I didn't miss much...good stuff anyway. I remember Bonderman getting into early trouble last year too. He often has a shaky first inning. He then settles down, but it's tough when he spots the opponent early runs. He's got to figure that out, it's got to be a concentration thing. I had the same doubts with Rodney last year. I like him but my confidence in him getting a key hold or save is a bit low. You guys mentioned it, control issues in key situations.
My biggest disappointment is hearing that the fans booed the Nef Man. I agree Rich. That's not class, it's not even decent. We all vented and had our fun on this site last year at his expense, and I'm really not sure it's any different but the bottom line is he had no control over his coming to Detroit. That deal was made by management, one of the few (mistakes) we didn't like for the obvious reason that Infante deserved the opportunity to start in place of the injured Polanco. But it appeared no confidence was given him. And I think this deal further pushed Shelton out of the stretch drive and post season picture. Boo an opposing player for acting like an idiot or poor sportsmanship, or "just for fun",but not a Tiger player.I hope it doesn't continue.
Hey Rich, good to hear you still occupy a seat in that Muppet balcony.
