For those of you wondering ...
Gary Sheffield will wear number 3 as a Tiger. It's Alan Trammell's old number, of course, but it was never retired. Rather, it's been one of those numbers that players have avoided over the years. Nobody wore it this year after Trammell was out as manager. Sheffield was in a tough spot, because the numbers he has worn during his career -- 10 and 11 -- are associated with the current manager and the winningest manager in franchise history, respectively.
A tough spot?? Was the number 55, or 47, or 99 for that matter, taken?
Another modern ball player that WAY over-values his worth to the team?
Nothing against Gary Sheffield as a man or a ball player, but it seems the number 3 was one he coulda stayed away from. I guess he figures he is worth it, and he possibly is....just not to Tiger fans. Not yet, anyway.
Sigh............

There ya go.......shoulda retired it. I still haven't been able to visualize Sheffield in a Tiger uniform, let alone the number 3.

Number 4? Number 8?
We could just start the season by retiring the numbers of Trammell and Whitaker both. And Norm Cash's 25.

Retiring numbers is silly. I had no idea that Trammell was number 3. He was just Trammell.
What are our grandchildren going to tell their kids when there are only 8 unretired numbers left? Sorry guys, no shortstop today. By then they'll have switced to letters. SS in LF, RF at SS... Where are Abbott and Costello when you need them?

Certain numbers are sacred. I think it is overdone today though. Who's No. 1 for the Cardinals? The Wizard of course. No. 6? Musial. My kids will known No. 5 - Albert Pujols.
Who was No.7 for the Yankees?
I think the numbers should only be retired when the player is one of the greatest to play the game. Like MJ's No. 23 for the Bulls. No player should ever wear a Bulls 23 jersey on the court in a game. It would be sacrilege.
