Is he out or isn't he?

Placido Polanco said after the game, "I'm out for the year and maybe spring training." However, the Tigers training staff said through a spokesperson that they're still working with him on a day-to-day basis and that no decision has been made. His bag was packed for the trip to Chicago.

That is very sad news Jason. I can't imagine he said spring training! Have we missed something here? Is some kind of surgery impending? Spring training is what, 5 months away?
I hope he can come back and play at the physical level he was at before that fateful injury. It's obviously an "unjust" twist of fate to get injured making such a spectacular game saving catch.

As soon as I realized he was badly hurt, I thought "Placido, Why couldn't you have just let that one go?" Now look at how much his tremendous effort has cost first Placido, and then the team... if only he could go back to that fateful moment....

What will Jim Leyland do now? Will he continue to platoon 2 right handed 2nd basemen, or will he try to pick one and get him physically and mentally ready for the playoffs, assuming the Tigers get in? And please keep us posted on our guy Placido.

I think if PP is really out for the season you gotta go with Infante. There's a chance he'll play good defense and produce well offensively. There is not much chance of that with Perez at this point. I just hope the Placido was letting off some steam or expressing frustration rather that stating a fact.

The Tigers went into this season thinking that, barring major injuries, they'd be very competitive. That much has happened. If you match Maroth's injury with Polanco's, however, we can no longer say the Tigers avoided major injuries. Those two injuries have been near devastating, and neither one appears to be coming back to help down the final two weeks.

This is really a shame. Sure, the Yankee All Stars can overcome things like this, but not most franchises.

Not surprisingly, I have to say go with Infante also. He was the starter before Placido got here, and he's done nothing since to change that situation.

Hey Marty, what you posted reminds me of the Kaline injury in 1962.

Yes I agree. Play Infante. Might it even come down to which of these two is carried on the playoff roster, should the Tigers make it and Placido does come back? Yeah Rich. It's sad but a simple fact that this is not the same team that started the season so magically. Polanco, Maroth, Shelton, Spurling, Gomez, Santiago, etc. etc. etc. (strange metamorphosis indeed)
The Tigers are hobbling in on duct tape and chewing gum.

Yeah Rich, After rereading my post, I do tend to get a little melodramtic. Could you elaborate on the Kaline injury when you get the chance?

THERE IS NO DOUBT THAT PLACIDO AND GUILLEN ARE OUR 2 BEST PLAYERS BUT LETS NOT FORGET BIG RED WAS A MAIN FACTOR IN OUR GETTING TO THE TOP OF OUR LEAGUE.WITH GUILLEN PLAYING SHORT[SHOULD BE PLAYING 1ST UNTIL HIS LEG MENDS]AT NOT 100% AND POLONCO OUT I CAN NOT UNDERSTAND WHY HE DOES NOT PLAY HIS NEXT 2 BEST PLAYERS CLEVLEN AND BIG RED

A lot of here like Big Red but Clevlen has a long way to go.

Anyway, Rich Kaline was having a career year that year, had 29 HR and 94 RBIs in 100 games.

If he had hit 30 that year he would have retired with 400!!!

Bring him back DD!!

I AGREE THAT CLEVLEN NEEDS MORE TIME BUT WHAT I CAN NOT UNDERSTAND IS HE WAS PLAYING ON A SOMEWHAT REGULAR BASIS AND IF WHAT I HEARD WAS TRUE HE WAS SENT DOWN BECAUSE GRANDERSEN WAS INTIMIDATED BY HIM STARTING SO MUCH.HE WAS BATTING 400 AND HAD OVER 1100 SLUGGING PERCENTAGE.WHEN HE HIT THAT ONE OUT OF BOSTON OUR ANNOUNCERS WERE IN AWE AND YET LEYLAND TOOK HIM OUT THE NEXT TIME HE WAS TO BAT.I DO KNOW HE HAS AN ARM LIKE KALINE,SPEED THAT PROBABLY EXCEEDS GRANDERSEN[HE WOULD HAVE HAD A TRIPLE ON THE HIT GRANDERSEN HAD A DOUBLE ON THE OTHER NIGHT]AND HE CAN PLAY ALL THREE OUTFIELD POSITIONS WELL. LEYLAND SENT DOWN OUR BEST HITTER AT THE TIME EVEN THOUGH HE CONTINUES TO SAY WE NEED HITTING.I HOPE ALL TIGER FANS WOULD BE HAPPIER SEEING BRET AND BIG RED IN THE LINEUP THAN CASEY, PEREZ OR STAIRS. LESS WE FORGET THESE ARE REAL TIGERS NOT OUTSIDERS[ONE OUTSIDER WE SHOULD HAVE IS SORIANO-HE HAS 40 HOMERS AND 40 STEALS ALLREADY.
