Santiago out, Colon to DL

As expected, the Tigers optioned out Ramon Santiago to make room for Neifi Perez. He's in the starting lineup tonight, and Jim Leyland basically confirmed he'll be the primary second baseman.

Also, Roman Colon has been placed on the 15-day DL with neck spasms. Colby Lewis has been recalled from Toledo.

Wow, now Colon down? This is looking less and less like the team that won all those games earlier. Lot of new faces.

I wonder if bringing Colby Lewis up is just a short term fix. Did they bring him up since Maroth might be activated again soon? That is my guess. Zach Miner has decent numbers but doesn't seem to get very deep into ballgames. I wonder if they will keep him up or what they will do. Of course, if they wait for Maroth to make another start they might not have to send Miner down and can wait for the rosters to expand at the end of the month.

What he heck is leyland doing in the first game of a big 4 game series bringing in Zumaya. Everthing to lose nothing to gain IMO.
I like Leyland but he does some pretty bizarre things some time.

Oh Yeah, Jim it is OK to run a guy like Guillen with first and third!!?? Especially against Pierzynski and Contreras.

Clevlen just made a play that Ordonez can't. Nice

Well THAT was a good win. I had the feeling, going in, that winning the opener was an absolute necessity. I was afraid to admit it, even to myself.

I like the new guy so far. You need someone who might be able to do something when the bats aren't booming. It's one of the things I like about Vance Wilson.

Dan, I wondered about using Zumaya too, but both Grilli and Ledezma pitched yesterday, didn't they? He usually goes Zumaya one day, Rodney the next. It's all good for me, however, since I'll be at the games Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday, and I want to see Zumaya pitch live. That will probably happen now.

I hate to rag on Ordonez, because I think he's kind of banged up, but yeah, I don't think he gets that ball. But that's why Leyland had Clevlen in there. JL is on top of it.

It's possible the White Sox are heading for a slump, and the Tigers are coming out of one. They could get three of these games.

Great pitching by Verlander. Working that fast reminds me of the pitchers in the 60s.

Rich,
You lucky stiff! I have never been to comerica as I live on the West Coast of Canada now. Some day!

I just thought it odd that leyland would use JZ in a 6 run ball game. Why not save him for god knows what that might happen over the next 3?

I think Perez is going to do a good job and Dombrowski (and I presume Leyland too) was smart enough to get a great glove along with a guy who, like Rock, gets his bat on the ball and does not strike out much.

I hope Ordonez comes to life, he sees kind of wrapped up in himself from what I can see. If he keeps swinging at the first pitch I think he will continue to strugle. Nice to have Thames (and Clevlen) in a reserve role.

I thought Verlander working that quickly was brilliant. This is an old tactic in fast-pitch softball and can keep a batter from taking control of his at bat and seems to really help against guess hitters.

I'm displaced also, and I do have to drive 500 miles to get to Comerica. I've only been there once, and that was during the 2003 season. Saw the Tigers put on an absolute clinic on how to lose while not looking all that bad. It was almost a thing of beauty, how they did that. :-)

I bought these tickets several months ago and added the Friday game at the Jake since it was kind of on the way back. This year, I've seen the Tigers in Pittsburgh and Baltimore (rainout so that will be next month). I always go the ones in Baltimore and have also seen them in Philadelphia and at Fenway (the day Ted Williams died, strangely enough). But I'm pumped to visit Comerica this year.

Bring a sign that says HI to Beck's Blog!!!

Seriously though--enjoy yourself and make sure the boys win.
