Monday’s lineups: Tigers vs. Indians

Jose Iglesias returns to the starting lineup against Corey Kluber. Erick Aybar gets the matchup start at third base. But when you look at the lineup, the key is obviously (as usual) going to the middle of the order. Though Cabrera’s numbers below reflect a ton of success, he’s just 1-for-10 off Kluber this season. Victor Martinez is 2-for-9 against him.

Meanwhile, expect Brad Ausmus to be just as aggressive going to the bullpen early as he was yesterday.

“Even if you look at yesterday’s game, I managed that differently than I would have during the regular season,” Ausmus said. “Part of that’s because of the expanded roster, part of that’s because we have to win. I wouldn’t normally bring Shane Greene in that early in the game, but I felt like if he could keep us in the game for a couple innings, we could fight back offensively and it would give us a shot. You still have to take into account the usage of pitchers. Guys you have used a lot, you try to avoid, but at the same time, they all understand.”

part of that’s because we have to win.. that is why he used Sánchez with 2 days of rest. And Hardy only one inning

Hindsight, Ausmus should have used Hardy for 2 IP, then JZimm for 3-4 IP, then you are into your BP, Greene, AW/JW, Rondon. Avoid these guys that have been problems this season Sanchez (2 HR’s) and Pelfrey! Wow, we sure had it made when they had JV, Max, Porcello, Sanchez (the ERA leader) and Fister! You had a shot at a WIN every game!

Verlander lamented earlier this season that Tigers weren’t able to win it all with that rotation. It might end up being the best shot during his career as a Tiger…time will tell.

I understand why he went with Greene, Perlfrey, Zimm and Lowe. The game was open and beyond recovery. And he needs the horse for today with Farmer.
But why take Hardy out when he was pitching well. And why a second inning for a non rested pitcher

What does it say that at a critical time you have to toss in Farmer for a start. No offense to Farmer but he’s pretty inexperienced

It makes me wonder why they were not ready for this week. Farmer was all the Tigers could send out in a Important game ? Gotta do better than that .

2 out …2 strike 2 run homer to Crisp…..yesterday all over again.

New game. M and M
Before the HR , Iglesias jumped like the were changing signs. There was no need to steal sigh to know Farmer was coming with the fastball

Second missed DP-.The defense is not helping him

Trying to figure out if this ump has any idea where his strike zone is…’s literally all over the place. I think the batters on both sides are confused.

I amariably tried to go to RF.
Often he sure this will be refuted but I have seen it a million times. When Miggy starts to get in a “slouch” (not quite what would be called a slump), he doesn’t make it that far clockwise and ends up hitting over and over to the deepest part of the field.
Then he clues in and starts conciously to try and ambush the pitcher and pull the ball.
Presto—out of the slump—I mean slouch.
Hope he does it today.
There is nobody they need more to set the pace of the offense. He does tend to struggle at times in playoff like situations and we need him to catch fire.

Forget the first sentence. Computer glitch

Seems weird that Kirk Gibson won an MVP and SIX never did!

A 6 hitters lineup

Not sure what is going on with this ump (Gibson) but he has been pretty bad.

Getting away with murder so far (throwing Buck), but the Indians will not let that happen–you can be sure of it

Ok Miggy got 1 back

It is a bit disconcerting to be throwing 4 rookies in the last two weeks of the season

That has been strike all night long

for both teams

Yep all over the place for both teams no telling what this guy thinks is a ball/strike from pitch to pitch.

5 stranded for Iglesias….awesome

Wilson 5 HR allowed with McCann. 1 with Saltalamacchia ERA 6..14/2.10( before the HR)

Strand runner after runner…..then wham they score em easy. It’s just exhausting trying to figure out this team… on thing for sure is they’re not good enough.

Nice Miggy…let’s go Victor

Nope Victor just looked like a fool

Thanks again Justin.
Kinda what we have come to expect from you

And JD looked nearly as bad

That is what is called lights out relief. And credit Francona for recognizing when he needs it

Oliver is NASTY. I want one.

That must have been a rhetorical issue or a computer glitch because I never screw up. Miller, not Oliver. I still want one.

3 straight 2 out hits…..I think our relievers the last 3 days are afraid to succeed…..get onenough then we get it right back

And AWilson too

with a little “help” from JD

Must be E

I’m done ….afraid to win.

Miller AKA Oliver made our Tigers look “silly.” The Tigers are competitive. The Tribe will be Central champions tonight.

Yep big giant losers….just like our presidential candidates.

Jays lost too. The race is not over

It’s good to believe, but you look at the way this team plays when they get the opportunity to assert themselves and they fold.
It has been a litany of losing streak after winning streak all year long.
The Yo-Yo style of play just doesn’t work at this level.
Next year they need more balance in the lineup. More speed. A truly dominating closer, supporting cast in pen and a lot of good fortune for the the young rotation.

2gb. One of Os and Jays will lose at least 2.

It’s hard to face things when reality sets in. This year just wasn’t meant to be. Too many intangibles, injuries, poor execution, regression of established performers, a way too timid manager, and on and on. Oh, i know we’re not officially out of it yet, but we have to paly and beat Cleveland three straight. Do you think? Time to prepare my game face for the hapless Lions. As far as three things, I am out of gas.

Well kind of how I assumed the game would end . Watching the Indians celebrate on Tigers soil too much for me . Al A.has some big changes to make by next April.

I was thinking about your three things toward the end of the game Greg. Was wondering how you felt and if you could be composed enough to find three things when the one bad thing (losing this particular game) overshadowed all else.
I know all of us here look forward to them and hope there are many more in the future.

They should end the season for the Tigers….Our manager keeps putting losers in in
winning situations….but thats’ okay, he’ll be back next year with a nice raise…no sooner we get within one run….they give up a home run…..over and over…the beat gos on……I know its’ late…good night folks.

Not ready to stick a fork in them quite yet. I made a big deal about management starting Zim his first time back and am sorry I did so. I would like to see him pitch one last time this year because we all (including Zim) deserve to see what we missed out on this season with him injured.

I believe in him and his skillset and think of what might have been. I like this Tiger team and the brass that put them together.

Here’s to sweeping the rest of the week!

Nice idea that o’s Jays there but is a problem these guys wearing the old English D won’t win and don’t appear to be able to win.

Verlander tonight. I imagine he didn’t like the scene of the Indians celebrating last night. Might have a slight chip on his shoulder. I got it wrong when I posted the remaining games SP the other day. Somehow flip flopped Justin and Michael. So:
9/27 Cleve Verlander
9/28 Cleve Fulmer
9/29 Cleve Norris
9/30 Atl Boyd
10/1 Atl Farmer? Maybe even Ver on 3 days rest?
10/2 Atl Verlander
10/3 G163 or WC Fulmer
That’s not a bad lineup. 3 strongest for Cleveland.
Cleveland can be beaten the next 3. Division won. Lots of celebrating last night. I say they come out tonight flat facing Verlander. Then momentum shift. But it has to happen tonight. Even if they can afford to lose one more, it can’t be tonight’s game. I agree with Tom. A lot of doom and gloom here. We’re all exhausted from being heartbroken, angry and everything in between…..all summer. So what’s one more emotional investment? I’d rather hope and be disappointed if it comes to that. Not ready to be the disgruntled cynic. All in or all out. I think we see Romine back in the lineup tonight.

I went to bed pretty unhappy last night, pissed me off having to see another team celebrate on our field – I like to see us doing that. Then woke up to see highlights of the Marlins game and started crying. I will get over my disappointment of the baseball season, the Marlins can’t even fathom caring about that right now.

One of, if not the best pitcher in MLB and he’s dead. I watched the Marlins game.

I read this blog every day and enjoy the comments. It seems like forever since we have had a great bullpen. With inconsistent starting pitching and some shaky defense, we could not win the division. A team always looks good on paper. Why didn’t we go get Chapman or Miller? Injuries have hurt this 2016 team. This team reminds me of Todd Jones, a roller coaster ride, many highs and lows.

They tried once for Miller and O´s outbid the Tigers giving ERod. This season teams were asking Fulmer, Norris, Boyd. One of them was the price for Miller or even Chapman.
Francona is using Miller where he finds a spot because they had a closer and Allen remains the closer.

Had my finger on the remote with the last pitch anticipating celebration. Instantly turned off after SO. I got pretty silly yesterday morning with the blogs. Thinking about it now, was probably insensitive in light of the tragedy fresh in everyone’s minds. I want to apologize.
Yeah DB, Miller would look good “again” in the Old English D. But…what would he have cost the Tigers in terms of young prospects? We will, (or should) soon be in rebuilding mode. Patching mode got us to this point…..and that’s debatable. There are just too many debilitating contracts already. Was not the time. Irony is Miller was part of the Cabrera trade. Nobody here would take that trade back…I hope. Tigers have let some good ones go that’s for sure. It’s the way it is.

Last 10: Jays 6-4. Bal 5-5. Tigers 5-5
Last night, Grili imploded in the 9th
Benoit was injured by a Yankee stepping on him
Of course, the Jays are not the Tigers:
“Some teams have been taking pot shots at us all year long and some guys just got tired of it is, I think, what happened,” Gibbons said. “I thought the umpires handled it the right way.”
“That’s just kind of the unwritten rules of baseball,” Martin added. “You hit one of our guys, our MVP guy, after that sometimes the ball slips out of the pitcher’s hand and, for some reason, it’s even. That’s kind of how the game goes.”

They have speed: Maybin ,Upton, Iglesias , Romine , Collins .
And Kinsler while not fast leads the team in base taken (tied with .. Miguel Cabrera, he reaches 3rd base on VMart “singles”) . He has been known for years as a reckless runner because he goes to far at 1B, but while PO 6 times, he gets that extra-base
But they don’t get enough on bases. You cant steal 1B( as Gose exemplifies )

Shaky defense by the Tigers? The last time I checked the AL stats, the Tigers were first in Fielding Percentage, had the second least Passed Balls, caught the third most runners trying to steal bases and had the least number of errors.

It’sup to these guys themselves now. I am sure we will questionable lineup deployments but the guys that are in there have to simply win the game they are playing. They win out the next week and chnaces are they might squeak in. On eloss–they are finished.
Speed? When Miggy and VMart and Salty in the lineup together (though Salty doesn’t really have to run the bases since he doesn’t get there much) tie up the lineup. You have to wait for the three run homer and I will bet you we are not among the leaders in 3 run homers. Complicate the above with missing Casty and JD for long stretches then you have a obviously weakened lineup with much less power.
And when I say speed I mean M-O-R-E stolen bases and more going 1st to 3rd and 2nd to home than we have seen this year (again). I would not say Upton has “quickness”. He may have speed but it under-utilized. He’s as lazy on the base paths as he is in LF. He is not an aggressive runner. You can look no further than the team we are playing now and the one we just finished playing to see what team speed will do. And I also mean everyday speed. Not counting the guys who fill the bench up.
And let’s put something to rest.
Who would you have as your closer if you had both on your team right now:
Miller or KRod?
Miller is being used by Francona in that role because he is lights out wherever you pitch him and he has the luxury of having a guy with strikeout ability and a 1.00 WHIP who is doing the job in the 9th.
Miller has proven he can close. They just don’t need him to.

Gose? Why use Gose as an example? He is gone/banished and likely never to return. Gose played his first full MLB season last year and hit.254/.321/.688 while being one of the top basestealers in the AL. His BA was higher than Iggy, Upton, Romine, Collins, McGehee, Jones, McCann, Aviles, Salty and Machado have so far managed in 2016. And his OBP has likewise bettered Upton, Collins, Iggy, Romine, Salty, McCann, McGehee, Aviles and Jones.,,

Okay, we’re heading down a path well traveled again so here’s this:
Tonight on “Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel” on HBO at 10 pm, there will be a segment on automatic k-zones instead of umpires. Haven’t seen it but I cued up my DVR.

OMG, bring it on.

Is there a stat for Managers’ WAR?

Thanks and I found this:

Brad is towards the bottom.
N.B. the comment about base-running

As for base-running. I think JD does not get nearly enough credit for his quickness, determination, judgement and hustle on the base paths. And he runs out ground balls hard. Every time. Beaten out a fair number of DP attempts. I often hear our colour commentators (Gibson maybe?) mention a pinch runner for him or McCann. I don’t see it. I feel very confident with JD running the bases.
Kinsler is aggressive. Sometimes it’s good sometimes it’s bad–very bad.
Iggy is good. Gets fooled sometimes when on 2nd and nobody on 1st. But generally pretty good.
Casty is marginal. His decisions come from inexperience and his foot speed is probably less than average.
McCann is not afraid to run and he will need to get a better read when on base.
Maybin should be able to steal more bases. Not sure I remember him ever stealing 3rd. Obviously fast.
Miggy is better than average with his brain making up for his legs. Fun to watch.
Upton is average but can actually surprise a pitcher every now and then.
Victor is to base-running as Donald Trump is to decorum and diplomacy.
The bench? What does it matter unless you have a track star that can either hit a little or catch a baseball.

Maybe the Tribe WANT us to get into the playoffs so that they can play us!
