Saturday’s lineups: Tigers at Indians

Jarrod Saltalamacchia hasn’t caught a Justin Verlander start since June 26, when the Indians put up eight runs and four homers off of him. However, with neither catcher hitting Carlos Carrasco in their careers (0-for-10 for McCann), Saltalamacchia gets the start today. Andrew Romine gets another start at third base.

The forecast will be just as interesting as the matchup. There’s a line of rain stretching from eastern Canada to Tennessee, and while Cleveland might avoid the worst of it, it’s still going to get rain. It’s more a matter of when than if, and whether they have to delay the game to avoid both teams losing their starting pitchers after an inning or two.

If and when this game gets going, it’ll be on FS1, not Fox Sports Detroit. Former Tigers pitcher C.J. Nitkowski is on the broadcast.

Detroit LHB vs Indian LHB? No contest and huge pressure on a RHP.

3,4 on

No rhythm between JV and Salty. This is not going to go well for Justin. He’s already frustrated.

Pleas do NOT throw a 3-2 fastball

And Thank You

Keep trying to pull that ball Victor.
Matter of time before they get two off JV and with our hitting that ought to be enough to lose.

Verlander spend the last game shouting at McCann. His game calling is worse than his framing

Salty is the right guy for JV.

The Vanishing Act continues.

Obviously it doesn’t matter who or how many Indians pitch

Francona will be sweating bullets if this should go to extra innings

Maybin is useless today. 1st pitch swinging on a guy who is having obvious control issues

Vmart…..practically useless at the plate

Iglesias could have scored. Took to long to go back. The play is for the LF, The 2B has to turn his body

Please, please retire Victor. You are only going to really embarass yourself next year.
Absolutely selfish once again.

We are stuck with Victor. No other club will take his bad contract .What was the front office thinking ?

And there ya go……

Pitch can’t hit….hit can’t pitch. Typical tigers

JV has pitched fantastically well. They will be tempted tho throw him again next inning.
He deserves it but the chances are he will get beat if they do.

Can’t even get one run off their bullpen all game. Embarrassing!

Oh my here come JW against a lefty in a key situation.
To my recall he has been very poor in getting this out.
Not sure why Bruce didn’t elevate to Nayquin. He had proven he can’t hit that pitch and the hot zone used as a graphic earlier in the game thoroughly supported that statement.

IBB and then defensive indifference. Got lucky there

Pathetic! Only 4 hits against 7 relievers and Miller?? This year has been tougher to watch than last year when they really threw in the towel at the deadline. Makes you wonder if Avila should have done that this year too given the SP talent they received in exchange last year.

McCann 29 SO% Upton 29.4

They need to find a leadoff batter and a solid #2SP, solid BP arm (or 2), Figure out what to do (eat) with VMart, Sanchez & Pelfrey’s contract $$, they were poor signings!
Let injury prone Maybin go and get a HITTING instructor, Wally is not the answer!
Fuller, Boyd and Norris may prove to be at least 2 Starting Pitchers who can log enough innings that you don’t have to monitor/alter the pitching schedules in pennant race. I believe that Avila/Ausmus screwed up Fulmer’s season when they tinkered with his cycles.

and Iglesias bails him out.

R U kidding me.
Wilson is sucking and they leve him in to face Nap.
Please fire Ausmes

Well at lease there is no more false hope.

You are right. We made the 500 mile trip last Thursday. Twins were the better team that day. Tigers showed no passion to win .Looks like they just showed up because they had to. With the payroll they have they should be much better.
Something really has to change for this team to be a success.

Stupid freaking tigers…..vaunted offense my butt….pathetic losers

Oh well. I think we all pretty much knew when the blonde curls of Justin Wilson appeared on the mound that doom would ensue.
Not even paying attention to Kipnis at 2nd. Kipnis read the weakness like a ball player should.
Wilson has managed to lose some pretty critical ball games for us this year.
No way he should have been in there with a man on 3rd and wild pitches going all over the place. Actually surprised it didn’t end on a wild pitch or bases-loaded walk.
Season is officially over.

Thanks to JV, Michael, Daniel, Casty, JD, Miggy and Kinsler for at least giving us something dream about.
Let’s get rid of Upton, teach Moya how to play 1st, let Victor run for president in Venezuela, fire Ausmus, re-vamp the entire bullpen and pray a lot.

One thing that was crystal clear this year: these guys collectively really didn’t believe in each other. I can’t even blame Gary Sheffield for it this time.

Just got home from family reunion picnic. Game result very discouraging. Hope now for a 2nd place finish above .500? Maybe 86-76 unless you believe in miracles for the last 14 games. I know it may seem like I am not a very good fan but I just feel like there has been something wrong the last 10 years starting with the 2006 WS. The managers? The coaching? Certain players? The bullpen for sure but that can’t be all of it.

You know if I’m a FA Starting Pitcher looking for a new ball club, I would avoid/take a pass on 1st thoughts of the Detroit Tigers. No Bullpen!!! I feel terribly bad for JV who has worked his Ass of to get conditioned for a long season and other than 1 hit and 4 walks, his teammates screwed him!! I am starting to believe it is Comerica Park’s dimensions and could there be demons in the bullpen? This club stinks!!

I think much of the problem actually comes from a misplaced loyalty that has permeated upper management since I can remember.
Loyalty is fine but simply because players are fan favourites, or have been apart of the team for a few years does not mean that one good season deserves a 4 year contract.
You can go back to the days of Bonderman and Nate Robertson for a couple of examples. Then extrapolate others such as Victor, Miggy or JV. These are difficult contracts to carry on a team with issues that need resolution. Throw in onerous new contracts like Fielder or Upton and you now have a payroll that precludes
going for sensible, better than average players.

A 100 Million dollar lineup can’t score 1 run off of a whole bunch of guys throwing one inning each. If you can be positive now, Miggy, then I’m crazier than I thought I was. This team has sucked every semblance of sanity out of my feeble body. What makes me nauseous is the guy who still talks about our feared lineup. Our weariness shows in performance, body language, and interaction on the bench. JV shows more passion than anyone, and he deserves so much more. We laugh and say, to win our guys have to pitch a shutout; well that’s what he and Alex did for nine innings. The last time I looked, we lost the game to the Indians again. I almost wish the Drummer’s hands would shrivel up and fall off. I think the bigger indictment is more on Avila than Brad. His first full year as a GM was not very colorful–Aviles, Upton, Pelfry, Lowe, J. Wilson, Upton; I didn’t include Maybin or Z-Man because I do think Jordan bounces back. Maybin might always be injury prone with his 145 Lb frame. The Zimmerman, Castellanos, and Julio injuries just could not be overcome with using sub-part talent ie. Aviles, Collins, McGeehe, etc. No homers from third base since Casty’s injury. You might take one more year of Upton, having a year of adjustment to AL pitching. Salty’s homers early were big; lately he has given us nothing. McCann really needs to work on his approach, especially with RHP’s. Victor does need to retire, and we need that dynamic left hand power hitter.
1. JV lays it all on the field.
2. A Wilson continues to be the BP MVP.
3. Miggy at least got to second base early in scoring position.
When the season started, I thought this would be one of the most dynamic lineups in recent years. Sadly over the last three weeks, it has proven to be the downfall of our season. My mouth drops open in amazement with the number of times, we have left RISP, especially at third base. What happened to a routine fairly deep fly ball? We faile miserably at fundamental baseball when we needed to be at the top of that phase of the game. Iam a very disappointed, but never deserting die hard Tiger fan. MY old English D is a little out of kilter right now, but it still is worn with nothing but pride.

I doubt if Miggy, or any of the Tigers, is feeling positive after last nights miserable game followed by today. I really can’t believe they let Cleveland own them this year, but we all say anything can happen in baseball. Maybe tomorrow our guys will win, I sure could use a feel good moment. As others, I am very disappointed in the team, and they are breaking my heart.

Big seconds to that Greg. Brutal game. Can’t score 1 for your ace. Tired of watching this lethargic brand of baseball. All the stats in the world can’t cover it. What a difference in these two teams. You wouldn’t think the Indians had just lost their second best remaining starter for the year by the way they played. 14 games left, 3 games back in wild card. Either get busy winning or get busy packing. Tigers dangerously close to another long off season, saddled with a debilitating payroll.

The BP ERE was below 3 before this series.Last 4 lossses before today were on the SP and the offense. The BP allowed just one run today

ERA

The bullpen has been deficient and turned wins into losses the whole year. They took turns at being brutal.
Stats can never explain this club. A team that just couldn’t pick each other up and didn’t ever build the necessary winning attitude

Houston joined the group. Jays and O´s lost and no ground was lost

Chemistry. These guys dont know how to have fun. Just like the manager

That’s encouraging El T. But the way the WC contenders are playing is a good argument why the WC is just a freebee for undeserving teams to get in. Right now Texas, Cleveland, and Boston are the deserving teams. They are generally playing good consistent baseball. Seems like no one else wants it or is good enough. I will continue to watch and hope, but like I said last night, this style of pedestrian baseball the Tigers play is just getting old. Well, on the encouraging side, JD just might be ready to bust out of the funk he’s been in. Two good ABs yesterday, the walk and the hit. When he’s cold it really shows because Victor has done little lately, a DP machine, and J-Up, is just not consistent. Maybin is lost and seemingly has no confidence in his swing. I could go on…..
