Tuesday’s lineups: Tigers vs. Royals

No Miguel Cabrera in the Tigers lineup tonight as he deals with a left biceps strain. Brad Ausmus said he had to convince Cabrera that an day of caution was the best course. Jarrod Saltalamacchia starts at first base over Andrew Romine. Tyler Collins starts in center against left-hander Danny Duffy, but he’ll bat ninth in the lineup. Essentially, it’s a start for defensive purposes, though Mike Aviles is 5-for-18 off Duffy. Casey McGehee moves up to second, as he did Saturday against Cole Hamels.

The Royals lineup has a lot of history against Justin Verlander. His 30 strikeouts of Alex Gordon are the most by any active pitcher against an active player in the Majors at this point, according to Elias Sports Bureau.

…..And you think you don’t like this offensive offensive lineup. What do you think Justin Verlander thinks about it?
Upton moves up to the 5 hole to help compensate for the loss of Miggy?
I predict 2 strikeouts and one untimely double play in his 4 or 5 at bats.
I also predict he will hit under .225 this year and frustrate fans and players along the way even more.
Not sure how the law of averages will affect JV tonight but the guy has been stalwart. He deserves some results from his mates tonight.

Dan, agree with you on the offensive results for JV! JV has been the recipient of some anemic offense this year (and several years for that matter)! I hope they work the counts against Duffy if permissible to get him either throwing mistakes or out of the game by the middle innings. Still cannot believe they scored 1 run last night. Hopefully someone went to retrieve their bats in Arlington last night!

Aviles out Aybar in…….whatever.

Glad to see Aviles gone. Hecooked after a pretty decent career. Aybar is a pure rental, albeit younger than Aviles. And his stats aren’t what he once was. The problem here is Aybar will cost another $2M on top of the $2M Aviles made. So, in effect, Aviles cost $4M. Just a horrible signing.

Correction: He was cooked…

It also cost them a decent catching prospect

Yep. I just read that. Thanks.

Nothing like wasting a lead off double…..way to go

Well the way our Tigers are hitting and Duffy pitching that 1 run might be enough.

It’s the 5th inning and I’m beginning to feel like the Tigers may never score again.

No sooner said than done. That crow tastes mighty fine.

Two down now and if they give up two or even one more, they’ll be done.
I get a kick out of how many signs McCann has to put down with Verlander pitching as opposed to Fullmer.
Looks to me that JV really wants to do his own thing.

If only they could have runners on with these HRs.

Not good enough JV……..you need to be better……time to turn to Olympics watch some effort. Disgusted. If they come back great but I wouldn’t bet on it.

Where is the team from 2 weeks ago ?

Dan recently and appropriately renamed our submarine in LF as F-Up.. I get that. Early in the season I preached patience about his hitting and forgave him his drifting and sometimes lazy defense. But, I am also drifting from perplexed to impatient to venting, raging maniac concerning his performance. F-Up needs to step up and perform like the carrier he was signed to be This Toledo offense just plain sucks. F-Up has carried teams before and needs to do so now.

JV has gone deep and is behind hitters now that his defense has failed him and his pitch count is high by today’s norm. He gave the Toledo Tigers a chance to win. And they have failed him. JV is a bulldog in my mind.

He gave up those 3 dingers all on his own. Last inning an error yes but he gave up a,single with two strikes and then walked a guy….that’s all on him….he was mediocre. That’s what would be said if Sanchez or Pelfry was on the mound right? His teammates are aweful too.

Baloney. JV made a Quality Start that was turned into dirt. And neither Sanchez nor Pelfrey can touch JV in virtually any statistical category.

JV gave up 5 runs 3 earned…..Pelfry and Sanchez have had similar starts and IT WAS said on this very blog that they sucked. Go back its true. You bring up the quality start stat that equals a 4.5 era and that isnt actually good. Today he gave up 3 er in 7….that’s a 3.86 era which is ok not ace like tonight. Of course hes better than those two but my point is this is they’ve had similar starts and have gotten crap….JV wasn’t great either

The Toledo Tigers look ready to lose their 7th game in the last 9. I now almost feel the only way the Tigers win is if the pitching staff gives up no runs. F-Up… We need you to do what you can do!

You saw what he could do today.
Strike out, no clutch hit, throwing to the wrong base, looking disinterested etc.
Right on about JV though Darline.
He pitched well enough to win.
But no way this team wins a game right now if they have to score 3 runs (or two for that matter)

Well the team is at least making it easier for management to make a decision of Fullmer’s innings!

Kris, I have gone over the QS issue before. You are correct in your point about the 4.5 ERA. Would not Sanchez or Pelfrey love such a stat? But the BIGGER issue is giving your team a chance to win. And for one thing, not every QS means the starter gave up 3 runs. In fact, lots of those starts involve fewer runs, As you pointed out, JV’s ERA is much lower than that after a pretty slow season start. Regardless, a QS means when the starter turns it over,to the BP after 6 innings the team has a chance to win because only 3 runs were allowed. To me, that is key. Today, JV was stretched and then he was failed. He is a BULLDOG in my mind.

That should read only a maximum of 3 runs were allowed. Heck, it could be no runs were allowed.

Okay, let me put it this way. Pelfrey and Sanchez combined have 40 starts and only 9 are QS. In comparison, JV has 24 starts and 18 are QS. Go ahead. You choose. Pick your guy.

Keep it rolling Darline. With all due respect Kris, if you don’t see the value of JV on the mound every time out, your’e as blind as the umpires who’ve been calling balls and strikes later. Starting pitching has not been our problem. We need to face it guys. We made our run to get within 2. Tell me another team with 4 starters and 2 rotation starters missing, that is doing well this year. We can tread water, but unless a miracle happens, we won’t make the playoffs. I don’t care how many callups there are, or trades are done, the offense cannot succeed without Maybin, Castellanos, and Iggy; that’s assuming Miggy misses a couple of games only. And that doesn’t even take into consideration that Upton has literally laid an egg this year. When your bench has a combine 200 average if that, you ain’t going nowhere. And then we have to hold our breath on every Sanchez pitch tomorrow night. In the ninth, Victor and Julio wanted to get it over, swung at the first thing the saw; and I don’t really fault them. I’m sick of Kirk talking about Lowe’s improved stats over the last 2 weeks. As soon as he stopped talking, Morales hit the first pitch over the fence. Salty is not a first baseman, but again, right now he is the best chance to run into one; McGee has one extra base hit; Machado is lost at the plate. It’s just nauseating to get three hits a game against a central foe; yes Duffy is good; theyr’e throwing the young “jerk” tomorrow night, who is talented. And then after that we have the Sox for 4 games. and We’re home. Say anything you want to say, but don’t gripe about JV’s performance tonight. Kinsler was really pressing tonight,
1. JV
2. Ryan
3. No one got hurt.
No kudos. In case you didn’t know, I’m ticked off.

When did I ever say I didn’t see his value….however some might say he knew how thin the lineup is right now so even his three very long dingers he gave up were too much especially when a better pitcher was going on the other side. So in essence he wasn’t good enough….but as I said before his team was worse. And Darline I just don’t happen to agree with you that a Quality Start is a true reflection of how somebody pitched and a lot of people don’t agree with you either!

Okay, Kris. We differ on this issue. But, we are on the same side even if we are not on the same page. Thanks for sharing. I’m tired and very frustrated about a passion you and I and many others enjoy. I need to say good night. So, take care.

We were rolling and upbeat not that long ago within 2 games. Now it seems like we have a mountain to climb again. We never seem to deal well with our injuries, we just don’t have the depth. The Mud Hens are not a great team, so having half of our team from there right now is a big, big problem for our offense.

Tiger Girl is right. One of the problems, that has been glaring for years, is the lack of AAA players that can help the Tigers. They can still make a run, there is time (if you’re a believer). But, it’s going to take some luck, calls being made in the Tigers favor and being fortunate enough to play a team when they are having a bad game. We need our guys with injuries to come back at full speed, and I’ll bet they can’t wait to get back and help the team.
Greg, re Gibby commenting on Lowe, Gibby is a cheerleader whose glass is always half full. They can be down by 6 in the 9th and there’s Gibby “come on Tigers, you can still win this”. If Paws gets sick, Gibby can put on the costume.

Agreed. Gib is the consummate optimist. But how long do you defend J-Up who played for him? And know one feels worse for Upton than me. His season is defying past history. He always had the 6 week streak that carried a team. Either it will happen
very soon, or this is just going to be a terrible year for him. In all reality, most players would have gone off the deep end. I disagree that he doesn’t care, ie. mental lapses in the field. I see a a guy who is profoundly ashamed and disappointed with his contributions to a team paying him a lot of money. I guess I get a little frustrated when Mario, Rod, and Gibby say “we’ve got to get him going, or he’s almost there. it’s their job I know but also honest analysis should be a part of a nightly broadcast. Our guys sometimes make too many excuses; there should be a balance of loyalty and reality for a player and team performance.

Can we put him on the DL with wounded pride and a banged-up ego?

I really feel for Upton. I wish things would turnaround for him, the guy deserves it.

I guess, but it’s the fans that really deserve it.
I never liked the idea of the FA signing of a RHB OFer.
