Wednesday’s lineups: Tigers at Mariners

lineups

As you’ve probably heard by now, Cameron Maybin is officially on the disabled list. Since the move is retroactive to last Thursday, he’ll be eligible to return a week from Friday. Instead of calling up another position player as expected, the Tigers called up Warwick Saupold to have a fresh arm in the bullpen after last night’s 15-inning marathon sapped most of Detroit’s relief corps.

Also getting a break with Jose Iglesias, who played all 15 innings Tuesday night, as well as every inning of every game since July 21. It also probably doesn’t hurt that Mike Aviles, who did not play last night, is 7-for-20 with a pair of doubles off Felix Hernandez.

Right and we can expect Mike will just tear the cover off the ball tonight.
But, I do see the logic. Iggy does not get a lot of rest and this is the guy we all wondered about if he could recover from the stress fractures two years ago. He’s been great.
If Saupold pitches in this game I would pretty much think it means we got swept.

Wagner “Among those in attendance at @MudHens game tonight: Al Avila. Best known as Alex Avila’s dad, right? #Tigers”
First hand knowledge before the next call up?

He’s probably scouting for September call ups. Its only 2 weeks away.

That was my first thought too but they need a CF

The most reasonable assumption for Al to be there is because K-Rod has been such a big disappointment of late and he needs help to close. Can anyone read JIMENEZ between the lines?

I hope that tonight Aviles reverts back to the player he once was. I expect, however, he will be his usually disappointing self.

Really? Do GMs scout for September call
ups?

In a Division/WC race in mid-August.

And who is MLB-ready to play CF at Toledo?

Justin doesn’t have the same strike zone as Hernandez so far…..

True and glaringly so
Why not bat Jup lead off?
That way he is likely to hit into less DPs AND you get his AB over with over with

This ump angering me….

Yep the inequitable strike zone still happening. Ump from Ohio???

Miggy……come on!

Nope…..way too lazy of a fly ball

Ump keeps on squeezing JV and giving hernandez pitches off the plate. He’s helping decide this game

Every game is the same because it is the catcher ´s fault. Not the Ump.Last night, most of the mistakes favored The Tiger

Upton 9 at-bats in 2 nights and nothing. Stranded 3 already tonight. He is proving more worthless as the season goes along.

I had hoped that j-up might snap out of what ever it is in . Some one in Toledo has to be as good .

Pen has turned to crap again…..Pitch right down the middle to Cruz.

Can’t believe I stayed up very late the last several nights for this total crap.
.

Big fella…..whiffs on 3 pitches
Vmart…….single which should be a double
Jmart….weaaaaak popup
J-Up……predictable out
.

LOSERS ….WASTE OF TIME

And there you have it. That starting pitching is going to carry us where? Yeah, 4 straight losses. even though it was extremely good . Back to the Hitter’s Curse. Man this lineup is useless without Cam and Nick. Add in Upton whose name appears each night, and you have basically nothing, especially if The Big Boys fail to produce. Totally agree again about the umpiring; it has really sunk to a new low this year. I would be in favor of automated ball/strike calling. This nightmare is far from over; Texas ain’t rollin’ over for us. Fulmer will be our best chance there, but if you can’t score more than two runs, it’s a moot issue:
1. JV has earned my respect this year. He did all he could for us, and his guys fell flat on their faces.
2. Aviles’ two fantastic catches into short field territory. Too bad, he doesn’t do the same with the stick.
3. We did have a 13 pitch walk and an 11 pitch walk to Ian and Miggy.
Kudos to JV and Victor.
Just can’t believe this team. Cannot play on all cylinders but 2-10 if lucky. The ups and Downs of this season have aged me. I feel at least 67 years old; oh, I forgot; I am 67 years old. That’s what being a tiger this year will do to you.

Here we are again. A team that can play like the best team in baseball for 10 games then immediately change identity after a tough loss.
And year after year we go through the same lineup wide hitting slumps.
I totally feel Upton was a big mistake, and a costly one, but how does everybody else not hitting at the same time not be one of the great mysteries that tear this team apart, time and time again.
Ausmus has to take some blame here. He stubbornly used Wilson even after the resurgent Kyle Ryan had already warmed up. For some idiotic reason he believes in “the formula” he inherited from JL.
This will be his last season as Tiger manager if things stay off the rail.

I hope this is the last we see of Brad, this team needs an experienced manager. It just isn’t working under Brad’s guidance, I hope Avila sees that. I did not stay up to watch the Seattle series, so happy I decided sleep was a better option. Maybe Kinsler will hold a clubhouse pep rally and get these guys onboard to beat the crap out of his old team.

A fair amount of fans thought Brad would not be back for 2016 . We were wrong and Brad appeared with the blessings from the front office . Who knows what 2017 will bring .

Ausmus was ranked 26th by ESPN, And deservedly so.
If the team faces “bad umpirig” all the time , the umpires are not the problem(I dont buy the conspiracy theory). The problem is the catchres tandem .A pitcher complaining all the time does not help
Ryan has pretty bad numbers vs LHB. The same is true for Wilson but still better than Ryan.Wilson has been better vs RHB for two seasons now.I guess it is Wilson not KRod the one that needs a replacement
Jimenez had a bad outing and twitted and angry answer to the beat writter reporting it. Not that smart
Castellanos was hitting 200 while the team was winning 8

I dont know how comes someone can be worse managing a BP than Ausmus

The player they really miss is Maybin.

Connect the dots. Avila went to Toledo. The closer, Jiminez, came in to pitch the 9th with his team one run down. That scenario doesn’t read like a September call up review, nor does it read like an evaluation of non-ready MLB CFers. Avila was obviously in Toledo to see if Jimenez is ready to bail out the troubled closer situation in Detroit.

You could be right but JJ has certainly not an easy transition to AAA.
The strike-outs have literally stopped. He has had his saves but unless he is able to come into a game and dominate he will fade away into obscurity. From what I’ve seen, that won’t happen but you know, you never know.
As to Frankie, I’m afraid we have seen the best of what he has to offer and the rest will not be pretty.

Yep. Jimenez just may not be ready. Kinda like Nick’s situation where viable alternatives were limited to fill an MLB spot and the player had to be rushed and developed at the varsity level.

And I haven’t given up on K-Rod yet. He’s not what he used to be and he’s certainly no Chapman. But, for some reason he has proven much more effective than his stuff says he should be. I only hope he is just having a bad stretch and will settle back in. Nonetheless, it is very troubling in a tight race when your closer doesn’t close effectively. And that is my opinion based upon the eye test.

Just to be clear, just because I (or any other blogger) complains about a specific player does not mean the player is being scapegoated for the team’s failures.
It means we see a flaw that worries us as a possible ingredient in not ending up in the “winners’ circle” at the end of the season.
So now with that being said, they have to do SOMETHING with Justin Upton. Anything at all would be welcomed at this point. He is hurting the team there is no question about it.
Bat him 2nd until Maybin returns?
Bat him 6th?
7th?
Bench him and call up an OFer?
Trade him?
His body language is defeatist. He has zero confidence. He turns a 2-0 pitch into an advantage for the pitcher (swings from the heels at every one of them from).
But please something because the situation is chronic and contagious.

Bullpen?
How about Preston Guilmet?
Why not-we have used guys like Ferrell, Molleken, Parnell, Saupold and Kensing.
7:1 K to BB ratio
Good ERA
Over a K per inning
If I am a starter pitching my ass of for this team right now it has to be very, very discouraging.

Bernard is a RHB hitting .300 with 20 SB

On paper the pitching match-ups vs Texas certainly don’t favor the Tigers.

Back “Iglesias scratched from Tigers lineup. He’s dealing with left hamstring injury from running down 1B line at Seattle on Wednesday.” They need a 4th bench player

Probable DL

Saupold recalled. Next,Romine regular SS. Machado backup and Presley CF? One of the redundant LH down? 14 pitchers…

Iglesias 106 games . 14 games short of his career high 120. They have Aviles and Romine to rest him. But not a chance.

Awesome!!! Lol

had. They never rested him enough due to the Gose- JD -Collins situation

When it rains……………..
May as well play Machado.

Rangers
Smell ya later, tarp!
The rain-delayed #DarvishDay is set to begin at 8:45 pm CT
