Thursday’s lineups: Tigers vs. White Sox

Two notable absences from Detroit’s day-game lineup: Cameron Maybin is out with a sprained left thumb suffered in Wednesday’s win, and Victor Martinez is a late scratch for what the Tigers are calling an extra day of rest. No word whether the scratch was related to that foul ball he took off his foot last night that had him limping around, or the slide into home plate. Martinez was originally in the lineup, then lifted, causing a shuffle that sent Andrew Romine from center field to first base. Maybin is considered day-to-day.

On the White Sox side, Adam Eaton is batting third today for the first time in his Major League career. Tim Anderson and Melky Cabrera move up in the order.

Why Nick as 4th batter when he has been struggling? Better JD or even J-Up. As I say this, I am hoping Nick has a break-out day. Also hoping Zimm has a good outing. Quintana usually allows few runs.

OMG, lets get out of the 1st inning unscathed.

just when I was gonna say JD lengthens our lineup (J-Up was going to be hitting 7th) Victor comes up lame and changes the whole lineup.

Lots of fragile players on the team

Zimmerman not great so far….apparently Garcia is the only team he can hit against

Tigers are the only team he can hit against

Nice play by Saltalamacchia

This is why I thought the Tigers actually needed a top of the rotation starter not a mid-rotation starter. Zimmerman IMO is no longer a top of the rotation guy. I thought he was very lucky early on this season and much of this opinion was based on a reduction in velocity and in command.
I know he is smart and resourceful but we really need him to be pitching better than he has shown thus far.

Might need to think about getting Zimmerman out of there …but who?

Alex Wilson is warming up

Per usual Brada day late and a dollar short a couple batters too late getting him out of there.

I am only able to watch on Gameday right now. It looks like batting practice. Is it that bad? Are the balls being hit hard?

3rd inning and he got yanked. 6-1.

Yep

Too late? Zimm does not have it today. And Nick almost hit into a double play but then was thrown out at the plate. So the two guys I questioned in the first post have so far let the team down. There were signs in the 1st inning they might be able to get to Quintana.

Did NIck go on his own home or get waived in?

IDK for sure, but I didn’t see 3rd base coach stopping him.
.
They’re going to have to send someone down to Toledo and get another pitcher for the BP.

Just looked at the replay he was waived home…..and I actually don’t disagree with him being waived in.

Pretty bad ab’s since the first inning. Quick and quiet

If ZMan can’t get his act together then it is extremely important to find a dependable starter. Not sure Anibal will ever be that guy again. Still say Greene needs to start being stretched out.

Minnesota isn’t going to help us out today…..going to have to do it on our own

All the LH are better with Saltalamacchia. The best Ryan and Lowe in a whille

Just get on base Collins.

“He doesn’t look healthy” says Rod Allen re Zimmerman. He pitched crummy before he went on the DL and still looks awful.. Maybe it’s not injury, just rust.

“Ausmus said he was looking for fastball command today from Zimm – it had been a problem in his rehab starts – and he didn’t have it today…” He was not ready

8 IP in Toledo. Im aware of the Anibal, Norris, and Pelfrey problems but rushing him does not seem wise if they knew he was not yet able to pitch in a MLB game

So Tigers think Zim most likely needs another Toledo start, Zim says he’s good to go so they throw him out there today. Who’s running this club?

Second guessing but BA should have taken Zimm out when they had that meeting on the mound with the score 2-1. IF the BP had done as well as they did, it could have been a 3-2 Tiger win. Many of us could see that Zimm was not right.

Well I agree on taking him out . Brad and pitching coach concerned as was trainer . Then he is left in and the a sox go on the attack . Really have to wonder what Brad was thinking .

I thought we would win the last 55 games; guess I was wrong. Z looked very wounded today. Hopeful it’s rust and lack of command with no continuing affects from his injury.
Quintana has pitched us tough all year long. It was a good streak, and we can now prepare to take the next series. We win each series, we go to the playoffs. Great to have Julio in the lineup; one comes in and another falls out. Can’t wait until we can play the original 8 in the lineup. Again, I hope that Cam is not one of those continual nagging injury type players; he’s had some tough knocks this year, and you recognize the absence of passion when he’s missing:
1. The Salty foul ball catch and the perfect peg to second.
2. Hat’s off to the Pen(Lowe included) who gave this team 8 chances to tie or win.
Fabulous effort.
3. Miggy’s Home run swing which looked more like a golf swing; it shows how much raw power this guy possesses.
Kudos to Mig, J-Up, Julio, and especially Alex who closed out the second with no further damage. Also to Iggy again for great SS defense. Bring on the Mets. We get a break with no Cespedes, but a challenge with Big Noah on the mound.

His back hurts, but in a different spot.

Now he’s having an MRI. He’s got a lat pull.

that will probably require another 15 day DL unless it’s more serious.

A lot of fragile players on this team!

So Miggy is heating up. Now with 25 hr and 70 rbi. BA up to .306 But it is all about pitching. Can we do it? Boyd, Fulmer, Greene, and Norris. Gum time!

Sounds like the Tigers are still relying on DD. The irony is his foresight and acumen with his acquisitions resulted in his termination.

Syndergaard going for the Mets tomorrow and deGrom on Sunday. Not only do their names sound like something from an action-hero/villain movie, but these kids can pitch. Don’t everyone panic if the offense gets shut down.

LOL… On ALL sentiments. Panic is much of what the Tiger Nation is about.

I’ll be sure and panic. You can count on it.

Cameron does seem a bit fragile. He has been (for me) a pleasant and huge surprise on this roster. One of those guys that is greater than the sum of the parts.
If he needs to be replaced then they need to go to Jacoby or Wynton. I think Gose is a ghost.
What a shame. He has all the tools but can’t implement them.
Ironic that Ryan pitched so well today that they feel they have to replace him with somebody else. I get the numbers game but in reality there is room for a lefty out there in place of Lowe.
Hardy is a serviceable guy and probably more dependable than Lowe.
Ryan has earned a spot. He is a battler.
Looks to me like when Ryan is ready to return we will also see Jiminez called up which means Lowe or Aviles will be gone and suggest AA made a mistake or two in the off season.
If I am Brad I take a little pressure off Nick by lowering him behind Justin (who may be just on the edge of a major contribution)
Salty is really showing why he was one of AA’s “good” FA signings. Great piece of hitting today on his single to RF and his defense was very impressive.
Daniel Norris had a very good outing today. Timely indeed. With Pelfrey, Anibal and ZMan being unreliable that could be vefy important.
Collins has been a treat. He hammered a very tough lefty today with not much to show for it.

I checked Toledo’s stats a few days ago. Hardy has excellent numbers in close to 30 appearances. I’m not too sure the Tigers will give up yet on Lowe because of his contract and success last season. Regarding CF, Jones is talented, but I don’t think his offensive stats merit a promotion. Then again, Maybin was underwater with his bat before his promotion to the Tigers. Bernard has some tools and is doing better at Erie, but I’m not sold on him. And then there is Gose, again. I absolutely agree he is talented and believe he would do the best of any any of the possibilites in CF. But. his bat has been atrocious and seems to get worse with every demotion. At this point, Gose might need a psychiatrist or a change of teams, or both. I think I would stick with Collins at this point as the 4th OFer, unless things change, And they always do in time,

Fullmer has had 17 starts this year.
The Tigers have won 15 of those games.
So they have won every single one of his 6 no-decisions!

Yes, more than any other pitcher and MLB but that also means they are 42-47 with the others.
