Wednesday’s lineups: Tigers vs. Twins

The way Miguel Cabrera and Victor Martinez have been hitting since the All-Star break, Brad Ausmus said he considered sitting one of them today. Their ninth-inning base hits convinced him to hold off on that.

“It crossed my mind during the game,” Ausmus said, “but they both had good swings last at-bat.”

The one notable day off is Jose Iglesias. Andrew Romine makes just his third start of the month.

Collins out. Neck
Injuries appear, maybe it is just an impression, to follow some trend. If so, training techniques are to blame.

Has he had neck issues before? Or are you wondering about the tiger’s training staff?

My impression through the first 4 innings…..
.
JV getting the job done..but laborious
Santana…getting very quick outs..yes some hard hit balls at times but really easy. He might be able to pitch 12 innings athe this rate.

Well, I was hoping they’d get a lead before I had to leave for a luncheon. They better hurry up.

Are you kidding me! MAYBIN most reliable hitter….grounds into a double play and not surprising Miggy does absolutely nothing. Looking rather bad against this mediocre pitching of Minnesota…not 1 game but 3 straight.
.

was anybody else wondering last night why VMart was not pinch-ran for when he got on in the 9th? I realize his score did not mean anything but him on the basepaths does not help either. A ball that scoots away from the catcher could have gotten him to 2nd to put more pressure on the pitcher.

Yes!!

Fox is the worst network, heaven forbid we should see the idiot running on the field. Next time they don’t need to show the players enjoying the show. PC all the way. I could have used a laugh with the way the Tigers are playing.

I think it’s an mlb rule

my boss is at the game, just sent me a video of it – if I was smarter I would know how to upload a video to this post

Figures………..so freaking tired of this lame team.

Must be nice to have a team that lives up to expectations and an extraordinarily large payroll instead of this group which doesn’t. I’m not sure if it’s because it’s a well paid veteran laden team and they don’t need to play for their next contract or what? But it’s really bad. It’s been going on far too long to be considered a small sample size. They’re not fun though it’s mostly painful in my opinion.
.
I’m a masochist…..I guess ….they’re exhausting
.

another wasted effort by Verlander….why don’t they just let him finish the freakin’
game?

The cycle continues; we go from great hitting to good bullpen to good starting, but none are ever together. This game should have been won well before the 9th. GK, I’m joining you in the Detroit chapter of the Masochist Club of America. JV has really become the ace again, but they can’t get him two runs. Two games lost in the last two innings to the Twins . So now back to 7.5 out. I just don’t get this team; not only masochism but neurosis too:
1. Ace goes 8 with 9K’s.
2. Romine’s gem in the first.
3. Another chance to tie in the 9th.
Kudos to Aviles and JV. Miggy had two harmless singles. No drive in the swing at all. We did hit the ball on the scews several times with no luck, especially Victor’s last AB.
On the road games are essentially a nightmare, and Big Mike will be up soon. Excuse me, while I go slobber awhile.

4 runs….in 3 games against the worst pitching staff in the AL. Good luck against Sale Quintana and whomever else they throw up there.

Tigers 7-2 vs Twins
Cleveland 4-5 vs Twins
It is the name of the game

It’s the total and complete lack of productivity from 3-7 that’s sickening. Lazy ugly ab’s. Castellanos has had some moments but the rest cower under the daunting task of driving in runs…especially 3&4 hitters. It’s no longer a small sample size it’s nearly the whole season for Cabrera and Victor for the last month. Can’t live on past accomplishments forever

That was about as disappointing a series as I can remember. And they keep getting beat by their own ballpark which they refuse to alter.

Comerica’s size has been a sore spot with me for years. How many times have our guys hit the ball far enough to be a home run in other parks? How do you leave a park that size when the team has been focused on a line up of power hitters? Makes no sense.

Where is the leadership on this team ? There is none is there ? Looks like they are just showing up .

That was a really bad series with great starts by the starters with the exception of Sanchie’s 7th inning and then K-Rod’s 9th inning. You cannot waste those efforts against the teams below you and expect to make the wild card spot(s). Can you play .500 on the road?

Yes, it is baseball. The best player in the team history after Ty Cobb can have a bad month- Yes, after 14 years 2434 Hits, 1498 RBI and 426 HR , LHP figured him out. He is aware of that and it is working to fix the problem. The batting coach, what is he paid for?
One month and he is called fat, lazy and asked to take his head of his.. Well, his peer and journalists think he is the smartest player in MLB.
He does not care, he does not run grounder. So what,? he wont risk his body for nothing;
“Bone spurs in his right ankle. They were not expecting that an exam would reveal a stress fracture in his right foot, too.” 313/371/524/895
“Grade 2-3 groin strain, including tears of fiber, just short of a rupture.” MVP 348/442/636/1078
Sore calf. Missed time on DL for the first time: 338/440/534/974. Batting title
He is paid for that, he must give the money back, think again:
As Tigers fWAR 45.4 That is worth at market prices: 319 MM but he was paid 151 MM as Tigers. 168 MM surplus for the Tigers. Miguel could go 0 WAR until 2013 and the team will break even.
Yes, he is signed until 2023. Forget about moving him to make a spot for that basketball player. That would be preposterous
He was selected by his peers, that know better for the ASG. Who complained ?the so called Tigers fans who were crying foul because the at 2B was snubbed. Pity Altuve and Cano are having a better season
Kinsler: 292/347/505/852
Cabrera 289/366/494/861
By the ASG , Cabrera´s number were better than Kinsler´s numbers
BTW: they guy does not play for free

Victor: 291 .339.486 .825. Pretty good numbers. Still fourth in hard hit %. The problem was the misguided cortisone shot. Masquerading pain it is a pretty bad idea. Since then, all the way down

ElT, you are certainly Miggy’s best defender. I am one that doesn’t want to see him traded, he has said he wants to be a Tiger for life and that is fine with me. I am hoping he ends his career here as Big Papi is doing in Boston, as a great DH and teammate. I am wondering if his back, or something else is contributing to this spell he is going through.
Re Kinsler being snubbed, I would have rather seen him go the the ASG. I wanted Miggy to spend that time with his family relaxing. Sometimes a break does wonders.

Spot on Kate. I would hope that ELT understands that everyone of us is enamored of Miguel Cabrera. We have been spoiled to his amazing talent; the criticisms are frustrations because we always thought he would get the job too. And in this rough stretch, he would be the first one to tell you that he has let the team down. Like Kate, I want him to retire a Tiger. But as I have long noted, I want all of them to retire as Tigers. As a free marketer, free agency serves its purpose; but I think in the long run, it has diminished the spirit and purity of the game. JV and Miggy are locked in with contracts that are well out of balance, but it gives me a chance to call them a Tiger for more than two years. I still find myself wanting to know how our former Tigers are doing with other clubs. The one thing that free agency will do, if not already, is to show the madness of wanting to win by signing pitchers to 5 and 7 year deals, and position players to 7-10 year deals. Look what a bind it has put on our payroll.
So to my noble Venezuelan Blogger friend, whom I highly respect: I will continue my criticisms of Miggy, Victor, and any other player who achieved the dream, and became an instant millionaire in doing it, when they don’t earn that money through sub par performing. But as long as they wear the old English D, I will be loyal to them until they retire or depart.

Larry said it best, who is the leader. So Sanchie let the first two on and Rondon blew it. Why do we still have Bruce? Did we have the first two on in the sixth and Maybin did not bunt? My daughter and her husband were at the game. Too bad Krod blew it. The dog days are coming and I will not give up on my Tigers!

I don’t know who you’re reading, ElT, but it sounds like they are rather thick headed.
So current Miggy isn’t previous Miggy. So what? Who among us is?
Basically, a lot of people love to complain all the time. The thing is, if Miggy had a day off fans would complain that the lineup is weak.

I don’t think anyone disrespects Miggy, or V-Mart, for that matter. So, I really don’t understand the repeated defensive posturing about them. The fact is, the results haven’t been there for either of them for the last 30 or so. Both Mr. Henning and Mr. Beck have addressed their statistics in recent articles. Heck,V-Mart and Miggy are just in a slump at the same time. That has been tough on the Tigers. Which brings me to my pet peeve. No, it’s not Gose. I saw him as a defensive role player with some offensive tools, not as an impact player. BUT… my expectation for Upton was he could carry a team for a month or two at a time. He has never stepped up and done that this year, which leaves the team in a predicament when neither Miggy nor V-Mart are productive. So, Upton wins my Pet Peeve Award for the season thus far.

And some players have FAR exceeded my expectations. To name some. Nick, Maybin, Fulmer and K-Rod. By the end of the season, there will hopefully be a few others. As far as Pelfrey and Aviles go, they have lived DOWN to the expectations I expressed for them at their signings.

Like your posts Darline.
As to Miggy? Well it is clearly obvious he has regressed. Not sure why he is struggling in the clutch nor why he is not driving the ball with authority and power. I look at guys who are older (Pujols and Ortiz) who are still very dangerous hitters and shake my head as to why Miggy has become so manageable (and less dangerous than he has ever been) by mediocre pitching.
To me, he looks tentative and a bit puzzled at the plate. Confidence?
Regardless, Without the customary performance level he has given us in the past we are lost without him.

As to Aviles: There is not concrete reason why this guy is on this ball team at this time. As an outfielder he is sub-par and as an infielder he is barely average. He can’t hit much, he is old and he is blocking “looks” form real OFers in the minors.
Illitch can afford his GM’s mistakes. This was certainly one of them.
There are others.
And yet he plays again tonight. You call this team a contender with a situation like this?
