Thursday’s lineups: Tigers at Rays

There are two artificial turf fields left in the Majors. The Tigers will play eight games on them over the next 11 days, beginning tonight at Tampa Bay. In past years, this would be an issue that required player rest for a few guys, usually veterans. That doesn’t appear to be a concern right now, even with Steven Moya coming off a sore knee.

“He’ll get his days here and there anyway,” Brad Ausmus said.

Moya doesn’t sound particularly worried about it, either. He played at Tropicana Field during one of those end of Spring Training exhibitions last year, so he knows the surface.

So are we going to get good or bad Zimmerman?

no arm for a 3B

Runner was in his way

Looking like we might be getting so so to bad Zimmerman

Just got home and turned it on. Not so good.

A damn pop up just scored 3…….outfielders stink….Zimmerman stinks too

That is a ball that had to be caught . The end result is 3 more runs cross the plate .

Baseball was meant to play on grass, and not in a moon dome

Are the Tiger hitters going to sleep through this game? Not the good Zimm. Down 5 runs already with a high pitch count. Too many extremes. They take a series and then fall on their faces.

Well he is no ACE to be sure though he was paraded as one when they got him. My opinion is he was a mid-rotation starter (kinda like an enthusiastic management thought Pelfrey to be).
The rotation is and has been a trouble spot this year.
Sanchez, Greene, Pelfrey, and then throw in an aging JV and an over-achieving (early on) Zimmermann and you have a very vulnerable pitching staff.
Zim had quick 2 strike counts all inning last inning but couldn’t seem to capitalize.
Not a good sign at all.
Meanwhile we are once again looking at a team that instantly turns into a mess after playing really good baseball.

The defense failed badly. His low K/9 is not helping him but Moya, the roof and Kinsler cost him( Iglesias forced to go to 1B)

Before this game: Fulmer FIP 3.82 Zimmermann 3.62. Defense is the difference

Miggy back to not driving in runs miggy…1 strike out 2 gidp’s.

One of Worst hitting team in baseball….showing you up. Seriously????

Can you believe it?

Maybin ,two hits this inning

I wonder how many shut it off and missed this!

I bet a few

The Minnesota debacle in reverse. Might change the whole season

Holy moly

What a come back

Well, you don’t see that every day. Good ABs all the way through the order. I think a whole lot of people (perhaps including some players) learned to never give up on a game. Literally turned frowns upside down.
And that ballpark is an abomination.

Yikes! That was pretty special.

When I posted earlier, I alluded to the loss in Minneapolis last year; that was the dagger that killed our year IOM. So we finally get to be on the winning side of a big ninth inning deficit, and WIN! Do think it will lift our team. I’m not ready to write off Z yet; look how many bad breaks he had. He gritted through six, and that was equally important. Could easily have given up three runs at the most without the bad luck.
And the Rays scored all seven runs with two out. I mean, give me a break. That’s not going to happen much either:
1.There were enough good AB’s early to drive the pitch count up for Tampa’s starter.
2. We scored 8 runs in the ninth without a home run.
3. Iggy continues to impress at the plate and in the 6 hole. FP through tonight- .991.
Team win-kudos to all, especially Maybin. He continues to generate an energy that becomes contagious. And 4 Ribs tonight. Team till made a lot of poor fielding plays. The outfield has taken a dive without Julio, and Upton is average at best. Our Middle Infield Combo takes a back seat to no one defensively. Miggy is above average, and Casty is improving. McCann is stellar. Tighten up the outfield and it will male us that much better. Go Fullmer.

Re # 1, I realize there were several K’s, but there were four 8+Pitch AB’s. And no one was making good contact early either. But he didn’t get out of the 6th.

Re Jordan Zimmermann, I’ve probably seen him pitch more than any of you and I’ll gladly hand him the ball for a big game at any time.

I like JZ. He’s not an ACE. But, despite a very poor June he has historically been very dependable. And, he is a BULLDOG, plain and simple.

Good teams can come back and win . Tigers showed us that . Maybin has become one of my favorite players .

Jordan pitched in some bad luck. The pop fly hitting the bloody roof changed an easy inning into a bad inning. (Toronto is another abomination when it comes to playing the game of baseball.)
But JZ is going to struggle all year IMO because he can’t put batters away with strike 3. That being said he may be struggling but he remains competitive while he is doing it and will win better than half his decisions.
Jiminez saved another tight one for Erie last night. 3 Ks on 16 pitches.
Meanwhile we have Lowe in our pen. Yes I know all about his inexperience and youth.
Maybin is playing the game way better than I expected he could. His ABs are really really good.

Hope this is the start of something good. It was sad they got swept by Cleveland, but Cleveland is beating everyone now and has won 13 straight. They swept the Seattle Mariners 4 games before Cleveland. While Seattle isn’t the best team, they’re not really the worst either and I don’t think that sweeping them should be discounted.

They do need to do something about the starting pitching though.
