Thanks Jason.
The niggling Maybin injuries are getting tiresome.
Mike Aviles becoming a regular when it is doubtful he should even be a bench player is getting tiresome.
Mike Pelfrey being called “good” boggles the imagination. He is dead last among qualified AL starters in WHIP.
Justin Upton is a shadow of his former self, and that was basically a slightly above average corner OFer (offensively). Defensively, you may as well have Purnal Goldy out there from all the evidence I’ve seen.
Does anyone in the Tiger organization realize they need to have at least one strikeout pitcher in the bullpen?
As good as Greene has been in relief how practical is it to keep him there with Pelfrey and Boyd in the rotation?
Every year we realize quite quickly how “flawed” the Detroit Tigers are.
Miggy and Victor really do have to power up more as the singles they get are a recipe for LOB.

Well, Purnal Goldy is dead. He was actually a distant in-law of ours. But your point on Upton is well taken.
Actually, I never expect the Tigers to win but don’t tell anybody.

Avila ” we have a team that’s pretty well set position by position. Pretty much, everyone we have right now, where they play – that’s their position.”
“In the end, if we end up needing an extra guy up on the bullpen, that’s an option that could be out there. I’m sure there’s going to be other teams looking for that bullpen arm, as there is every year.” Not really, buyer´s market. Plenty of relievers available. Dime a dozen this year.
“We don’t want to trade away our top prospects– ” well… then expect no trades.
Calling up JaCoby Jones.. “We will do everything that we can to try and avoid doing that,”
Quotes from McMann
They have no one in the system to play MLB OF and IF,so Aviles probably, will be there until game 162. He has been more valuable than Romine . He has played more for a reason.
There are no starters on the trade block (expected to be) but Aníbal. CC, Hill (injured) and Gray (struggling after injury).Shields was the cream of the crop.

5 pitches into the night crappy defense!

Can’t pitch….hit or field already in the first inning. Going to be a long night.

Victor 332/898. and that

Crap not JD…….he’s our hot hitter. Miggy needs to step up.
.
Justin not doing well so far…he needs to settle down

Very bad news about JD…again Miguel needs to start performing and not just once every 10 games or so

Just horrible news. One of our most consistent threats the last couple of weeks. I would think the logical thing to do is to call up Moya over Jones. They can’t keep carrying Maybin so my guess is he will be playing soon. They need to inject some power to replace (can’t really replace) JD and they have always been shy of LH pop. That plus they can’t keep Moya down much longer.
Feel really really bad for JD. He was on the verge of becoming a star.

Pelfry last night 7 hits 6 innings 4er
Verlander tonight 7 hits 4.1 innings 4er

2 hit batters as well?????? Starting pitching was doing better until this week….

Verlander has been throwing as well as anybody on the team lately. He is not the same pitcher he was a few years ago. Every pitcher gets knocked around at times. He was due to have a game like this. At least he will offset a poor game with good ones. He is still a good pitcher and certainly superior to Pelfrey.
Boy that Upton is a real beaut though.

Quite possibly JV gets out of that 1st inning if Upton catches the very catchable fly.

IMO Verlander to continue in the 8th. First guessing.

That’s stepping up

JV buldogged his way into the latter innings tonight. Haven’t seen Pelfrey do much of that in his games.

Ok why bring who’s been your best reliever with a five run lead? I know based on what happened the last few days but still

What’s happened to the other Wilson? We’ve seen Alex a lot this week but not the other since NYC

sore elbow

Nice to get the win to start the series . Gotta worry now what happens to jD .

Gotta worry a lot. He’s a Silver Slugger. Plus the nature of the injury could cause season and/or career repercussions. It is wait and see time.

I feel bad saying this and don’t wish it on Upton, BUT why JD and not him? The baseball gods certainly seem fickle.

Maybe it’s because JD trys harder…either way, that’s not very nice to even think that way…

Moya called up

Moya called up. Was there really any other power RF option?

4-6 weeks as said by Mr. Beck is optimistic. Reynolds figured it could be 10 weeks. Upton needs to step up The Tigers do not have much in the way of MLB ready power OF options.

Besides Moya.

Hoping outlook is better Darline. JD might be my favorite Tiger. Other sluggers stepped up tonight. Makes you wonder if things might have gone differently with Victor DHing in Chicago. KC playing without Gordon and Moustakas makes theirs a less dangerous looking lineup.

Bad luck for Julio and the Tigers. A gentleman and very good ballplayer; but KC lost Mustakis for the year, and Gordon is out too. We have to step it up with contributions from the rest of the guys..Hopefully, we can get him back sooner than the alternative.
Someone must have told the guys the Home run Derby was tonight, cause they surely were lettin’ them go. Love the three swings by the 37 year old,one-legged DH. He is truly a consummate professional hitter.I think Miggy was embarrassed to the point that he decided to join the barrage. Nice opening win gfor our guys, especially at the K:
1. JV pitches one of those old timey gutsy games, and hangs in for the W. You take away the first, and he didn’t pitch all that poorly.
2. The fact that we tied the game and went ahead against one of the big three.
3. Romine and McCann continue their march to cross the Mendoza Line; everybody will then be across.
Kudos to Victor, McCann for the tater and the peg to get Cain,Casty, Miggy, Romine, Iggy for D,J-Up for the timely RBI single, Shane, and Alex. Balderdash, let’s just say kudos to the tigers tonight. Beware of the Hothead on the mound for KC tomorrow. Go Fullmer.

So far, I think the Tigers have proven themselves competitive. BUT, I really would still not call them contenders at this point.

At this point, Texas, Baltimore and Boston qualify as contenders in my opinion.

JD down. Deadline coming. Offense is now compromised. Questionable pitching staff needs an upgrade to compensate.

Chater is Moya has to come up and produce. I say it is high time that Jup produces. 1×5 tonight with 2 Ks. All too familiar. He is bigger and slower than he used to be.
The thing is when you are big and slow you damn well better hit the fence with regularity. Victor should did that tonight wow. and Miggy chipped in and showed he still can reach the fences.
Upton has to help his team through this catastrophe.

Mean while, back at the ranch (I mean farm, Joe Jiminez has not given up a run in over 24 innings, has a 0.6 something WHIP and is striking out 1.7 hitters every inning.
Not sure how long the team can keep going with guys like Lowe, Alex and Buck but I don’t see enough swings and misses from these guys.

I’d think September call up at the least. Perhaps sooner. You’re right about having too many contact pitchers.
