Friday’s lineups: Tigers vs. Rays

Current Tigers have just six career plate appearances against Matt Andriese, and Jordan Zimmermann has two of them. James McCann has a single off of him from one of his relief appearances last September at Comerica Park. Regardless, no surprises in the lineup today. That means Steven Moya sits for a third time in four games fourth consecutive game. With Tyler Collins eligible to be recalled from Triple-A Toledo this weekend, it wouldn’t be a surprise if the Tigers option Moya back to the Mud Hens to get regular at-bats.

Moya sits for the fourth game in a row? Back to Toledo? They are going to either mess him up or lose him altogether. Enough of that sh*t. Why would they want Collins back?

That’s what you get when you are hitting .368
IMHO, they would be far better off considering any interest that other teams may have in Upton and just install Moya in LF. Upton has a reputation and a contract that might be attractive to other teams. We have a need for youth and a particular need for a power LHB (How long can we live with Salty and Victor providing pop?)
This is more than a “now” issue.
Upton could fetch some asset value but if we let him struggle on to July it will be much less.

Moya started at DH Wednesday, got 4 ABs…

You’re right. My bad. Forgot he was late addition.

If Moya goes down, he should at least play LF in Toledo. He needs to be able to play both LF and RF……..and that seems so obvious, it’s amazing it hasn’t been done.

He has played LF in Toledo ,and below, 74 games. But after just 2 games there this season , he was called up

Nice start. Can they dig themselves out of this hole?

I hope they can but I kinda doubt it….

They at least tied it but can they score more against this pitcher or do they have a shot against the TB bullpen?

TB BP is bad but the Tigers tend to go cold after 6

On cue Sanchez falls apart in the 6th

Tigers in a nutshell…….awesome pen

Anibal lets them down again and Ryan does the IR thing again plus more.😦

Ryan has been reliable the whole season:
Jason twetted: “Kyle Ryan had stranded 12 of 14 inherited runners this year”

oh oh McCann or Iglesias. help needed.

TY McCann but oh, Iggy, what a let down.

So it isn’t Ryan with the IR problem? Sorry, who is it then?

VerHagen and Alex Wilson

Only CJ Wilson has pitched more innings after TJ than Sánchez. ( active pitchers). Maybe, he reached the expiration date

Given it right back….crappy pitching staff

This is it then. 9th inning.

Ugh…..figures

Hopefully Miggy is on the way back. Doesn’t Moya also play RF? Give JD a day off tomorrow especially if there is a RHP for TB.

Alex Wilson gets poor reviews by some based upon IRS. In fact, not all relievers enter games with similar chances to prevent runners from scoring. As a result, IRS is a mixed bag with a flipside that has not been addressed by commentors. That is, there is a statistical category for Stranding Inherited Runners (SIR). In 2015, of the over 400 ranked MLB hurlers, Alex Wilson finished 38th in SIR. Blaine Hardy finished 16th and Justin Wilson finished 11th.

Is there a stat for IRS that takes into account how many outs the reliever has to get? Good example tonight; Ryan had to get all three outs with two on.

How about Sanchez joining the bullpen and bring up one of the youngsters……?

I guess asking for 5 straight was a little too much. I thought after getting back to 3-3, we’d pull it out, but the pen didn’t show up. Julio didn’t show up either; in five AB’s, he didn’t get the ball out of the infield. Nick took the night off too. Worry about tomorrow with Fullmer on the mound. The Rays are pretty bad, but the they do hit the taters, and they always pitch well. Anabal looks like a five inning guy; just can’t seem to finish the sixth. Don’t see much hope there. Need a lefty in the rotation anyway.
1. The report of Miggy’s demise might have been a little premature.
2. Maybin’s energy and enthusiasm should be sold in a bottle.
3. Lowe pitched a solid 9th. minus the walk.
Kudos to Miggy, Victor, Cameron, and Iggy for that awesome defense. Also J-UP deserves props for two walks and a solid single. He’s going to explose any day.
It will be nice to here Dick Enberg do the game tomorrow in Mario’s absence. start another streak tomorrow.

My thought exactly. Anibal doesn’t seem to have the stamina for a starter.

Per BR: Some sabermetricians have developed measures of a relief pitcher’s effectiveness based on the run expectation associated with the situation when he enters the game (i.e. the # of runs that would, on average, be scored in the remainder of an inning starting from this point.) Thus, the RP who allows the inherited runner to score from third over the course of a full inning is hardly penalized whereas the one who lets the runner score from first with 2 outs is considered to have failed significantly.

I spoke of a revolving door bullpen several weeks ago. It hasn’t really happened yet but I fully expect it will.
I don’t see Verhagen sticking. Ryan will come and go. Saupold and Fullmer won’t stick either. Alex Wilson can be talked about for all his contributions to whoever is saying it is blue in the face but he will never be an outstanding reliever.
Boyd is probably as ready as he can be. Jiminez is wasting his time in SINGLE A.
Guilmet and Kensing have been throwing strikes for Toledo. I also would not be surprised that the Tiger brass try one last time to hope Rondon can figure it out (he won’t). Voelker in Erie can actually strike people out, which is kinda cool for relievers to do.
Why is it Iggy only uses the bottom half of his bat to hit with? And I don’t mean the handle area–he very rarely squares up on the baseball and seems to top everything on the the ground.
Not sure why Salty didn’t PH for McCann. Actually expected it earlier on the AB that James singled in a run.

I don’t follow Toledo (or the other minors) like some of you do. After reading comments it sounds like somebody is doing a poor job of evaluating who comes up to the bigs to save the day. While I agree that some guys need time to mature & develop, there are special players that can hit the ground running, they are born to play.

Evaluating talent is McClendon ´s mission with Toledo

Not sure why Jacoby Jones is not getting more of a look at short. They have him playing 3rd. Somehow our minor league system seems only to develop position players at positions that are firmly blocked in the bigs.
Big game for Fullmer. I think it may be his last as a Tiger (for a while anyway). They would like to add Norris but I expect Boyd will be the guy (after Greene) they go to.
Feel bad for Anibal. He is a nice man and a good teammate.
Turning point for Pelfrey I would think. Might he be useful in the pen?

Jiminez: 14.1 IP 5H 0R 4BB 23K 0.62 WHIP
When does summer come to Erie & Toledo?

Kinsler 2b, JDMart rf, Cabrera 1b, VMart dh, Castellanos 3b, Upton lf, Maybin cf, McCann c, Iglesias ss. Fulmer p.

I see JaCoby as CF.

Only Castellanos at 3b. Iglesias, Machado at SS

1-6 vs LHP. 18-16 vs RHP
