Friday’s lineups: Tigers at Orioles

The Tigers repeat the outfield setup of Justin Upton in center and Steven Moya in left against Orioles starter Chris Tillman, who has held right-handed hitters to an 11-for-61 (.180) clip compared to 19-for-76 (.250) against left-handed batters. The only change on Detroit’s side is behind the plate, where James McCann will catch Justin Verlander.

The Orioles put Matt Wieters back in at catcher despite his historic struggles against Justin Verlander.

Verlander’s first inning has become a serious concern.

Saupold for Wilson on the 40 roster

McCann 35 % K

So I eat my words on the first inning. Now what?

Vintage Verlander, no RS

McC has thrown out 60% of basestealers (6 of 10).

No one is hitting so far. I hope JV can keep this up longer than Tillman.

Hit can’t pitch…..Pitch can’t hit. I’m not even sure in the crappiness of last year where they this pathetic.

JV was sensational. Another Quality Start.

How long can the Tigers afford to wait on our new upgrade at CF. Moya continues to look very good.

JV was great. We just can’t win right now. Not even when only giving up 1 run. Hopefully the rest will help our bullpen out though.

Tigers lose 1-0. No hitting from Miggy or Jup. 15-20 record. 35 games. Getting close to 40. Has there ever been any major trades by any team this early in the season? Who do you think they are talking to about becoming the next Tiger manager?

Both Miggy and J-UP have to catch fire and soon . They are hard to watch at times .
JV had a good solid outing .

I think the next call up for the Tigers should be Legendary Lloyd. See what he can do, if it’s still the same crap show at the all star break. Sell what you can.

I would like for Lloyd to get a chance . Bet it will be someone from inside the club or its farm system.

2-4 4.71 ERA .Back to back great efforts. Two of the 3 biggest question marks, him and Victor are no longer in doubt.

There is no one issue that creates a stretch like this, but a few timely homers can make up for a world of sins. One need look back no further than Nick’s 3-run jack in Minnesota.
The one saving grace at this point is that it’s early, but that ol’ sun is climbing in the sky.

Another way to lose tonight. And so it goes. The biggest positive I see is that JV has now accepted his role as a veteran pitcher and is using his “smarts” to make his arm better. One little mistake and he loses the game. Or should I say he gets credit for a loss. His offense which is nonexistent totally bailed on him. Zimmermann is thinking What have I gotten myself into? All I can say is it’s so sad to watch:
1. Complete game for JV, though he lost.
2. The Kinsler, Iggy, Miggy DP in the eighth.
3. Never out of the game.
Kudos to JV alone tonight. Miggy seems lost at what he does best. This team cannot get a clutch hit with RISP. It is baffling. Sanchez will more than likely be lit up like a Christmas tree tomorrow. Soory to be so negative. It sort of grows on ou.

It’s baseball. What are the Twins fans saying, or the Braves. We just want some exciting baseball. Maybe i will go to a Whitecaps game.

Good point DB, we are not the only baseball fans feeling the pain. We have to remember how quickly things can change. The Tigers could get hot and other teams are likely to slump at some point. Personally, I’d rather they have the big slump now. It’s even more frustrating later in the season. Go Tigers!

Castellanos 1.3. 14th in the AL Victor 1.2 15th. Kinsler 1.0

Maybin rehab assignment was recalled early May. Then began a second April 23 .The rehab is 20 days long. What Im missing?

ElTigre> “Saupold for Wilson on the 40 roster.” Which Wilson?

The catcher traded back to Texas. He left a roster spot open.

Maybe , Houston´s brass is not that clueless

What about Sanchy starting us on a 10 game winning streak tonight!! Time for some optimism and good will!!

Yep Upton is an MLB leader. He has struck out the most of any hitter and just added another. Plus, he has a brick glove.

DOA

I just said Miggy will.ground into a double play! Yep very predictable these days.

UNDERPERFORMING OVERPAID

sorry I love him but he’s killing us and I’m tired of him right now. How many more years do we have of him?

2023 plus 2 vesting options. Still, 4th most valuable player of the team

He’s been killing us

Miggy will be a Tiger forever . No other team is foolish enough to flip a coin on him .

He is not happy with his performance but
The .280 .358 .424 .782. line is better than many others.
Second best defensive Tiger

16 innings now …. if anyone is counting

Well so far ditto of last night. Sanchez looking really good but our offense on another planet. Why do they (almost our entire line-up) just seem to not be able to tee of and drive easily hittable fastballs in the early part of counts? They keep fouling off early, hittable fastballs and then have to hit from behind in counts. An epidemic this year.

Yep, Sanchez is decent so far. Did you hear the MLB pregame analysis about how awful he has been after an okay start this season? Good to see him stand up to the challenge, at least so far.

Gk , I agree mostly with what you have said lately about Miggy. But, I think if any guy on the team is apt to get hot and turn things around to where he is once again exceptional, it is Miggy.

As I said, Miggy just acted like Miggy.

I keep hoping that but this is more than a month it’s been over a year

They could allow Anibal to sit down before forcing him back to the mound.

Bobby Wilson just hit his 2nd grand slam in a week. Off the Jays. Go figure.
.
— Bov

— it’s Bob, not Bov. Lol.

Moya needs to catch that

And if he would of caught it we’do be up by 2 and batting
.

Once Jones went on, it was time to call the BP

Yep, Moya had a shot. But Sanchez just doesn’t have enuff to overcome “maybe” plays. And, Moya played the ball nicely off the wall. Compare him to Brick Glove Upton who could have turned that whole situation into a debacle.

why? Does he want to be fired? Or he knows he can do anything and wont be fired?

Sanchez has to pick himself up He did okay for a bit and then didn’t have enuff to overcome problems The upshot for him is he has put in a quarter of his starts for the season and doesn’t have a single Quality outing.

This team if you can call it that is as my dad would of said HORSESHIT!

Victor delivering again

They hired the Seattle reliever, the received the one that pitched with the Jays

When the Starters cannot produce Quality Starts then the BP gets overused, When the BP gets overused it gets ugly. JZ and JV have produced 13 Quality Starts. The rest of the rotation has produced only two (?). Upton cannot now be traded for a top quality Starter, but could get a dependable Starter because of his age and track record. The Tigers no longer have time to wait around for him to deliver. The Rotation needs help.A deal needs to be made that helps the Tigers and our trade partner.

I wouldn’t trade anyone till we get a new manager. Hard to know who would perform better with a new boss or not. It’s obvious this boss is not getting results.

16% of the payroll: Lowe, Pelfrey, Fielder and Maybin

So far all of Avila’s acquisitions have been disasters. Is that analytics or lack of?

Minus Zimermmann , Wilson and KRod

I will make a positve statement about our upgrade in CF. Even though Upton went 0 for 4, he only struck out twice. ,

Francisco Rodriguez. Early in the season he had a stretch of six days without an appearance. Since then, he’s had two separate seven day stretches without an appearance. Right now he’s on four days and counting. If he ever does pitch again, it’s doubtful he’ll be effective.
Meanwhile, we run the same tired arms out there every night while operating a shuttle from Toledo. This makes no sense. “The Book” only works if you have a reasonable assemblage of talent.

JL would have used KRod more than once to keep him ready

Besides JZ and JV no Starter gets deep enuff. Tired arms are the result.

To begin with, McCann, Gose and Verhagen to Toledo
Call up Maybin.
Aníbal to the BP ,but who starts?

That is crazy.

I’ll go crazier, the windows closed and we should start the rebuilding process. We’re not winning with this team. They suck. Instead of prying the window open a little longer I think its time to fold and start rebuilding.

I’m not watching until they get a real manager in there. Pathetic beyond words.

I have a suspicion Legendary Lloyd will be in Detroit come Monday.

1. Victor is a professional hitter.
2. Ian is the epitome of a professional ballplayer.
3. Miggy might be realizing that he has to lead this team.
I didn’t watch the last inning; if the team isn’t embarrassed, then I’m humiliated on their behalf.

The Legend is not the answer; I don’t seen one, except implode the team. and start over like 2004.

Comerica will be empty if this keeps up. I know I won’t pay for tickets if they don’t improve.

You are right . The fan base won’t pay the high prices. They should have known this might happen.

I haven’t given up on a season this early since 2003 but man, this has been one nightmarish stretch of games. They just have to play better baseball.

Really bad teams win 3-4 of 10. This is even worse than bad

Upton is making that big Vernon Wells contract look good. At least Wells could play defense.

Betances, Oliver, Chapman our BP is not.

Heck, I think I’m the crazy one. I keep hoping this team will settle down and turn this thing around. Maybe blowing the Tigers up is the answer. There will be absolutely no alternative if this train wreck can’t be fixed before the deadline.

And after considering things more calmly, ElT might be right.

McCann
.116 .191 .116 -0.3 WAR 31.9 % SO BB6.4 Career vs RH 239591
Saltalamacchia with all his limitations: 0.8 WAR
The line-up has 4 hitters right now; Victor, Castellanos, Kinsler and Miguel, 281 .362 .444 .806 Not good for him well above average.
Upton wont be benched . The Tigers need him to perform if they want to trade him or him opting out. If not 132/6. Be patient
JD is a 280 hitter. His success was fueled by a huge Babip thanks to his power. His power outage goes back to the ASG. His K rate is way down from his career norm. Maybe if he goes back to all or nothing.
Iglesias cant hit as known since day one. The Fenway fed Babip and his speed allowed him to overachieve. He is Adam Everett. I liked that team. He is the SS, a GG caliber SS. Nothing wrong with an all glove, non stick SS.
But the team can only carry one Everett . They are carrying 3 with Kose

Don’t worry, Henning says The Tigers need Legendary’s expertise with Toledo. He is the Tigers talent scout there

Cafardo “We’re told to watch for the Astros limiting their starting pitchers to five innings. They want to avoid having them face a lineup for a third time.”
Last night, I stopped before posting this,I waited until the first run was scored :
“If one runner goes on, pull Sánchez out. ”
By then only 3 players had not faced him a second time, One runner on meant the lead-off hitter will face him a third time.
The Tigers should have an eye on the Houston experiment

Two years ago, on May 18 to be exact, the Tigers had just swept Boston at Fenway and stood with a 27-12 record. Since that time, the club has gone 152-168, a .475 win percentage. Even eliminating the injury riddled 2015 campaign entirely, the record is 78-81.
This hasn’t been a good team for a long time.

Damn those Zumba’s. That is where it all went wrong. Lol. 😀
.
All joking aside, your statement is 100 percent true. So much bad fundamentals. Poor pitch selections. I really thought most of the offseason moves (Pelfrey and Aviles aside) were going to help. As you said earlier, almost all have backfired. Jays fans here who I laughed at when the Tigers signed Lowe are laughing at me now.
.
— Bob

Lineup at BAL: Kinsler 4, J. Martinez 9, Cabrera 3, V. Martinez DH, Castellanos 5, Upton 8, Moya 7, McCann 2, Aviles 6. Fulmer starts

The baseball gods are just angry with the Tigers about something. Bases loaded. Aviles makes the third out. Very next inning the first batter on the first pitch Kinsler gets a HR.

Is there any hope that this win could be the beginning of something better? JD and Miggy hit HRs which has become a rarity. Upton is coming around? Moya’s hitting has been good so far but I wonder if anyone thought he was a little slow to react on a couple of those Oriole doubles. Do you think there is still someone waiting to take over as manager tomorrow?
