Wednesday’s lineups: Tigers at Nationals

Though Nick Castellanos’ last couple games (along with Miguel Cabrera’s near-mishap with his knee Monday, and wet conditions today) raised speculation that he might not get his originally scheduled day out of the lineup, Brad Ausmus sticks with the plan. While Cabrera makes his first start at third base since Aug. 12, 2014, Victor Martinez starts at first base for the third time in four days.

The Nationals juggle their lineup and move up Daniel Murphy behind Bryce Harper, giving them back-to-back dangerous left-handed hitters against a Tigers team that now has four left-handed relievers with Daniel Norris called up. Murphy’s familiarity facing Zimmermann (62 plate appearances), as opposed to being a teammate, might have played a role.

I thought someone said here that Boyd was doing well at Toledo, not Norris.
I don’t care if it is Casty’s day to be off. He is hitting right now.
Miggy at 3rd? Isn’t that a bit risky when he just had a knee problem?

Boyd started last night. Not available for a few days. Tigers need bodies who are available.

So BirdMan is replaced by VanMan soon to be replaced by BoydMan.
See what I did there?

Yep. Farmer has been sent down to presumably be stretched out into a starter. Does that mean he is coming back to fill the #5 slot or is Pelfrey in big enuff trouble he is going to be replaced at #4 by one of the other kids and/or Greene (when he gets healthy). In any event, what are your name plans at that point?

Speaking of replacements, who goes when Maybin returns? It looks like his time is fast approaching.

Reason Nats do not have too many batters with a career record against Zimmermann is because he spent his entire career with Nats prior to signing with Tigers.

Sitting Casty at this point is actually quite stupid.
You could stick him in left and let Upton sweat things out a bit.
Casty is so confident now he could handle the challenge.

I agree with that, especially since Upton hasn’t shown himself to be a Gold Glover, or more than mmarginally adequate for that matter, in LF. And he certainly hasn’t performed like a Siiver Slugger so far, whereas Nick has.

Agreed. They did it with Jhonny P. And at least Nick has some minor league experience there.

The curious case is Werth, he played for Phil

4.60 ERA for Max until tonight

I used to love Max, now I am amazed at how much I dislike him (and his big ego). Please Tigers, beat this guy!!

I don’t know how Iggy turned on that pitch, but he did.

.339 .339 .441 .780 Victor vs the shift. I guess the news of the demise of the LH hitters were exaggerated

Max has 13 Ks thru 6. This guy is dealing. JZ is working, too Quite a matchup tonight.

Well, Upton sure just got roasted.

Nice DP. Glad JD didn’t earlier make the catch. Otherwise, a run would have scored.

I could listen to Dan Dickerson & Morris for every game. They put up a diagram showing where Upton should have thrown the ball instead of sailing it over the cut-off man.

I see Max is still a self congratulatory ass he’s always been. Still a giant dueche bag in my eyes

I’m probably alone here but I don’t think Victor and Miggy are a fit together. Having 2 of the slowest players in baseball hitting back to back just kills our momentum. I’d honestly be taking calls for Victor. His bat doesn’t compensate for being worthless on the basepath.

I agree with you on taking calls on Victor, but not for your reasons. This team as is will struggle to be .500. Hate to see him leave, it is nice watching him bat. But, we need more top prospects.

Not yet big guy. We could have won 3 of these last 4. and the rotation still might stabilize behind JZ and JV. Talk to me again closer to the deadline if our pitchers haven’t improved and we aren’t competitive, at least to the point another player (probably a pitcher?) can’t put us into a playoff drive.

Victor had 3 hits and no runs or RBIs tonight? He was stranded at 3rd in the 7th after Upton doubled. He should’ve scored but he’s lucky he made it to 3rd. We need at least 3 hits to score 1 run and I think that’s a problem that isn’t going away. He’s good enough to have value so we wouldn’t be just giving him away but the cap relief and not batting the 2 slowest players back to back should improve our offense. So far when those 2 haven’t been in the lineup together we’ve scored 8, 7, 7, 7, 3, 4, and 5 runs. I realize how small of a sample size that is but it is something I’ve noticed when they’re in the lineup together and it hasn’t been disproven one of them sits.

Congrats to Max… he is enjoyable to watch.. less so on the other side. Not sure what Brad was thinking leaving Romine at first and Casty in the on deck circle with 2 outs. O well good game.

Wow. That was quite a game and Max was just awesome. 20 SOs to tie the 9-inning record with the Rocket, Wood and Randy. 119 pitches and 96 strikes.

Gotta love how JZ competed, too.

Also our batting order looks like it was drawn from a hat. It looks like almost no thought ever gets put into it.

Of all nights for Max to pitch a beauty. He does deserve kudos.
I really wanted to see Nick bat in the 9th.

Congratulations to Max. What a great game. 20 k’s is incredible.

After tonights game i feel like Ausmas needs to be let go, he acts like he’s not interested in winning, the first game of the series he pinch hits Victor knowing he would be walked, making him the sacrificial lamb rather than Salty, then tonight with a chance to possibly tie or go ahead he chooses not to pinch hit Nick the hottest hitter in the american league instead he allows McCann who already sruck out 2 or 3 times to hit. What a nonsense move that was, what good does it do to have Nick on deck with the game on the line.

They guy was wasted in the 7th inning vs the O´s. Sure, keeping his arm to cash big

Tigers WAR Castellnos1.4. Kinsler 1.0 Victor 1.0 WARs formula penalizes DH . Still Victor is one of the most valuable players .
Cabrera 0.9
Iglesias .01
The rest of the team has a negative WAR

Only two regulars did not SO during a 20 K game. Boog Powell and Victor

Victor is 10-5 .He had a partial no trade clause for 2015. I think he would waive it to go to CWS or Cleveland

It was an entertaining game; one that harked back to the baseball we watched in the 1960s. Max got it in his head that he had something to prove, even though it was he who walked away to whoever paid him one dollar more. I suppose people who know him personally like him, but fans can feel betrayed, logical or not.
It would have been fun to see Nick PH in the 9th, but Salty had already been used and, once that was done, I didn’t see any opportunity for it. Romine, even if he hadn’t been Victor’s pinch runner, would have had to catch.
Anyway, did anyone expect us to take that series? I’m glad for the one win. On to Baltimore.

4-5/ 5-4/2-3
One run games are lost not won. They could have do it.The Tigers play better on the road.
Top 7th McCann and Gose with two on?. McCann has no biz there with a RH. Saltalamacchia was the obvious choice to begin the game,no matter if he cooled off,

I do realize Saltalamacchia SO. As PH

I didn’t mind the performance by Max as much as the description of it by the Nats Commentators. We’ve had the opportunity to see him in that mode. Still don’t think the Nats will get their money’s worth, just like us with JV, and any other 6+year contract for pitchers. It’s a crap shoot to sign a pitcher for more than 3 years.
Our guys made it look easy for the Mad Man. Gose, Ian, JMac, J-UP, even Miggy seemed way overmatched.
1. The J-Mac peg to get little “god”.
2. Zimmerman again pitches well enough to win.
3. The taters had us in the game all the way to the last out.
We could have won all three, or lost them all. Like Rich, one is pretty good considering the 5 W’s. To get two in Bird Town would be a gift. Of course, we could sweep, if our stud, Big Mike takes the mound again.

This team has no strategy…wiggle your ass, do something different, anyone can strike out….try getting hit by the ball, “Billy Ball”, Looked like the team taking turns to K…..Has anyone noticed…since McCann came back we bearly won one game…
waiting for this guy to hit has cost the team plenty while ChiSox keep playing
like pennant winners. We have no bench…I liked Holiday, and Wilson, I guess
Tiger managment see McCann as their future C….Cabrera has lost his legs, therefore, his power…he is not the hitter VMart is…I hear from commentators
what a smart hitter he is…not anymore….striking out more than ever .
Trade him while he’s still worth smething…but who wants that contract?
Maybe I’ll change my mind tomorrow. I’m just another fickle fan.

“On Moya in LF? “All of our OFs need to be versatile because of potential need in big leagues,” @MudHens McClendon said. #Tigers”
Upton , CF. Moya, LF?

I don’t have cable tv where I live so it is WKZO for me. Tell me what you saw, 2nd and 3rd with 1 out. Would you attempt to bunt the ball against a pitcher who has stuck out everybody. Seems like little league. 9th inning down by one run with a runner on 1st and a guy comes up to bat that has stuck out 3 times. Your best and hottest hitter is on the bench. Seems like little league. Who is in charge of this team? We still have enough games to figure it out!

After reading what Max had to say after the game, I have one request……..can our pitchers learn the art of sexy strikeouts? Max not only entertains on the mound, but his interviews can be gold.

I heard that last night. My own personal opinion is how sexy would it be to win the World Series? I know which one I’d like better!

Looks like Moya’s on the way. When he gets here, use him; don’t let him wilt on the bench.
