Monday’s lineups (updated): Tigers vs. Athletics

UPDATE: Change in the lineup just after batting practice. Ian Kinsler scratched with flu-like symptoms, causing a pair of changes. Mike Aviles will fill in at second base, but bat ninth. Jose Iglesias, who hit second yesterday with Justin Upton getting a break, will bat leadoff tonight with Kinsler out.

Miguel Cabrera and Justin Upton return to the Tigers lineup in their customary spots after pinch-hit duty Sunday, while Tyler Collins spells Anthony Gose in center. The batting order remains pretty standard.

Aviles is always a downgrade at whatever position he substitutes for. We hear so much about “super” utility players. There is nothing super about a 35 year old journeyman who is a .260 career hitter with no power. This is a far cry from a Zobrist and in truth closer to a Romine.
If Victor doesn’t hit .300 and drive in 80 how can you justify his 37 year old bat in the lineup? I get a David Ortiz or a Alex Rodriguez who can put up 30/100 even at advanced age. But in their cases it is justified by their power.
Victor is the WORST base runner in baseball. He is a liability when he gets on so it is imperative that he drives in runners at cleanup hitter pace.
If not, eat his salary and let him become Gates Brown. Bring in Moya and rotate the DH spot among Miggy, Salty, Moya, JD and Upton. This gets these guys a break and off their feet. It keeps them fresher. Right now with Victor in the lineup there is no manoeuvrability and it forces these guys to fatigue or out of the lineup to get a break.
This would not be a popular move for Brad nor will it be very popular here on the blog to even suggest, but “IF” Victor doesn’t hit with authority it is something that should really be considered—eventually anyway. Loyalty is great but another bummer season like last will be gruesome.

I agree with your take on the current version of Aviles. But, in fairness, the Aviles of up to 4 seasons ago had a pretty good stick and played some decent defense. And as you know, I like Moya. However until his last game he was hitting about .259 with 2HRs. I think it was Henning who only a few days ago put him on the not-so-hot list. A full year of consistent playing time is in his best interest, whatever level that would be at.

Ortiz was not mentioned in the Mitchell Report because the good Senator is a BoSox fan but he tested positive. And ARod is nearing the end of his career, he went AWOL last August and still on the run.
Victor is hitting with authority. 5th among DH, ISO .4th wOBA. 4th OPS.

JD 42 runners /6 RBI. Victor 33/10 RBI

Salty career K % 30.1

Refreshing to have a true leader that keeps his mouth shut.

Fingers crossed on Zim 2nite as they are hitting him pretty hard but the dude knows how to throw strikes
That is refreshing

And that is how TyCo career ends in Detroit

Okay, Tyco blows it, but did he throw the finger? The sky didn’t seem bad. What happened? In any event, JZ was getting hit hard and things sorta evened out.

Hitting better tonight and pitching….errors???? Well that’s another story!

Nice to see runs cross the plate . Makes me forget the weekend series with the Tribe.

Tyler Collins has a good stick…has been stinging the ball, but in most cases at someone….your thoughts are a little hasty at this time of the season….let the dust settle.Gose may be trying too hard, especially with guys he’s trying to beat out.
As far as Aviles is concerned….he used to kill the Tigers in clutch situations…give the guy a break already….he had a good day today…many more to come…..

Between Gose and Collins, who wants to be released/traded first? Wish they had a stud CF down in the minors with just enough seasoning. Maybe may be back up this season?

Cameron Maybin may be back up sometime this season? (This spellcheck has a mind of its own).

We win our 9th., and 20% of our rotation has 45% of the wins. Hire a bodyguard for that arm! You have to love his no nonsense ” give me the ball approach should be emulated by the rest. How refreshing to take a lead, to score 7 runs, to give up one walk, and to have your 2bie fill in hold his own.A game where Nick has two infield hits and a steal, and a game which shows that JZ is JZ and not Cy Young. An interesting game to watch:
1. 2-6 only had 2 K’s in 19 AB’s.
2. Avila’s defense was stalwart.
3. The M&M’s were the same flavor tonight, baseball delight!
Kudos to Mig for ever doubting him, to Victor for his tater, J-UP for having a decent plate night, Nick for continuing to evolve as a solid MLB player, Aviles for his RBI single, and to Justin W for being the best Lefty in our pen for a long time. I believe in you tomorrow night, Mike. Go Tigers!

Great game. Is Miggy back now for sure? Can we get some more good starting pitching? Second game in a row for Aviles and he seemed to come alive.

Lets hope they can keep it up . Nice win !!
