Thursday’s lineups: Tigers at Pirates

Beautiful day for a matinee in Pittsburgh, where a chilly morning is expected to warm up by midday. It’s also a lineup reminiscent lineup of a day game after a night game, with a few guys getting a break. Andrew Romine gets his first start of the season, while Bobby Wilson makes his first start as a Tiger, avoiding a quick turnaround for Jarrod Saltalamacchia. Wilson caught Jordan Zimmermann in his bullpen session a couple days ago, so it sounds like this plan was in the works before Saltalamacchia hit a grand slam last night. Meanwhile, Anthony Gose and Jose Iglesias are a combined 0-for-12 against Gerrit Cole.

Cole had a rough season debut last week, but he was nasty against the Tigers last year.

Is this a give-away game to the Pirates? Why have Collins, Wilson and Romine all facing Cole when you even have to have the pitcher batting? Z-man is going to have to be extra good with potentially very little run support.

Hi…I think Z-man is the 3B/!B for the Nats, or so I have read. I’ve gone to JZ to simplify his identity.

Part of the name thing might be that our guy has a double n at the end.

Wow not as bad as last night but I’m not thrilled with the pro-pirates strike zone today

Zimmerman not sharp today meanwhile Tigers go quickly and quietly

Zimmerman looks pretty good to me.
Castellanos sure had a big hit but he is one of silliest looking base-runners I’ve ever seen, His head is looking all over the place as if on a swivel when it should be looking at the fielder on a drive to left-center.
Base-running this year has been generally below average IMO.

tomorrow pelfrey ..is a bad move..rotation 4 no 5 pelfrey is a disaster

Much better than I imagined. JZnn was solid and Cole was off. Casty was the hitting hero in spite of all his faults. I can’t believe they took 3 of 4 from the Pirates. At least they don’t have to face them any more in case they do get hot again.

Those pesky Pirates are really good at one thing. They drive pitch counts up as good as I’ve seen, whether starter or reliever. It really was a boost to take 3-4, especially two at their home. If we can survive two years of Nick at third, then Mig moves to DH, and Casty goes to third. The bat potential is surely there. KRod finally has a clean inning, but at the expense of more than 20 pitches. We need to get rid of Pelfry, and get JV on track:
1. To score 7 runs with nothing from Miggy, and win is quite remarkable.
2. The relay from Ian to Wilson was a thing of beauty; Wilson’s tag was textbook.
3. Collins RBI double when the lead had shrunk;
Kudos to Zimmermann again for a gritty 6 innings. Getting out of 2 bases loaded jams was huge. Also kudos to Nick,Ian for continued good hitting, and Collins for the great throw to Ian. Time for Miggy to earn some money. On to Sunny Texas.

Meant Casty goes to first.

Pelfry doesn’t excite me much but the guy is big and strong. If he can figure out the splitter (it has nice action on it) he could be a guy who gives you 180 IP

Pelfrey has some talent and he once looked like a budding star. But, he has done very little for several years and has a significant injury history. I don’t expect much from Pelfrey and think he got way too much money. That said, I hope he resurrects his career as a Tiger and rediscovers his performance level from his years as a Met. Like I’ve said, Pelfrey is a guy I hold my breath and cross my fingers for when he takes the mound.

JZ looked good to me too. And Nick had a big day. If he hits 20 HRs and drives in 80 he will be a big plus to the Tigers. I don’t expect Nick to be great defensively, at third but if he can just be reliable and produce an average fielding % I’ll be happy. Vizquel has said he can be better than that defensively, but I don’t see it. Anyway, I think Nick could potentially hit 30 HRs and drive in 100 within the next 5 years.

And Nick is cheap as well as under control. There are a few young 3Bs with better profiles, but at least he’s not that disaster in Boston who DD inherited.

I think the Indians, Royals and White Sox probably have superior pitching staffs to what the Tigers can offer. But, I also think the Tigers can put more runs on the board. Things should prove very interesting in the Central this season. ,

I had dreaded the games with the Pirates . Turned out I was once again wrong . Nice win go Tigers !!
