Sunday’s lineups: Tigers vs. Astros

Justin Upton gets the day off after his two-homer, four-hit performance Saturday in Clearwater. So does Nick Castellanos, who has been making a slew of road trips this spring. Casey McGehee gets the start at third as the Tigers near decision time on whether to put him on the Opening Day roster or offer him a $100,000 retention bonus to stick around in the minors. Tyler Collins, who tripled twice yesterday, replaces Upton in left.

The Astros have a split-squad set with their trip to Mexico City this weekend, but kept a good number of big-leaguers stateside, including George Springer, Colby Rasmus and Carlos Gomez.

No TV today, but the radio broadcast is on 97.1 in Detroit and MLB Gameday Audio online. You can also listen online to the Astros broadcast, featuring former Tigers pitcher Steve Sparks.

Upton has one more SO than JD in the same ABs. And twice the BB . Upton has a track record.

Pelfrey is starting to pitch down to my original expectations. His track record for the last 4 years has been pretty bad. Although Pelfrey started out well this ST, he allowed 9 runs in 5 innings in his last start against MiLB players and,has given up 4 runs in 5 innings today. Pelfrey remains a big $16M gamble. Hopefully, he can recover his game from his years with the Mets..That guy was pretty solid.

There is no way Rondon can be relied upon in the BP. Even though he can once again bring heat, he has virtually no mastery over his command. That is not surprising given the number of different release points Rondon has in his delivery..

after last season’s finish, Tigers should have a high waiver claim priority. Maybe they’ll use it to add a bullpen arm as other teams trim their rosters.

Cessa throws today against the Tigers. I have never seen him pitch.Time will tell whether Avila made a decent deal in trading him.

Speaking of waivers–please stay away from a knee-jerk reaction to Carlos Marmol.

Polishuk of MLBTR: “It’s a bit surprising to see the Tigers cut ties with Parnell given all the question marks (both performance-wise and injury-wise) in their bullpen.”

Rondon to Toledo.
