Wednesday’s lineups: Tigers at Rangers

Miguel Cabrera is getting his day off as scheduled, and Victor Martinez remains out, so it’s an interesting lineup for the Tigers in their series finale at Texas. Detroit does get Nick Castellanos back after he left last night’s game with a bruised finger and sore wrist.

I really am disappointed in not seeing Moya’s name in the lineup. The guy is an athlete-he probably could play 1st too.
I give Rajai all the respect due him but this was the day to play Moya. rajai is gone. They can’t afford him as a 4th OFer next year anyway.

Sorry. ..from a standpoint that I think that their are others better than Miguel right now I don’t care if he plays or not ..but a scheduled day off and tomorrow off and in 5 days 4 months off …sorry I call bullshit

Same here

I would like to see more of Moya, also. But the Rangers are still in a race with the Astros and Angels. Given that Davis has been really hot, I think he needs to play to keep things as fair as possible for the teams still in competition. I know how I would feel if the shoe was on the other foot.

And I’m not really sure how much the Tigers are hurt with VMart and Miggy out in light of their physical conditions.

A class act:
“They have a lot less than knowledge of Daniel Norris and baseball than I do,” Ausmus said. “So I’m not really concerned about it.”

So arrogant.

I mean he’s right. Those of us that are second guessing are probably making a mountain out of a mole hill.
.
But, at same time it was still a bad decision. This makes him look like a fool. Only a fool doubles down on a bad decision. He’s better off not commenting on it at all, he can’t win. I think this just goes into what we have seen the last 2 years. He refuses to learn from mistakes, Those of us with a little life experience know that if you want to learn from a mistake the first thing you need to do is accept that it was a mistake. Only then can you realize other outcomes.
.
There has to be something we don’t know. I don’t see why else the Tigers would continue down this road.

The more I think about it, the more I think it’s this simple.
.
1.) The devil you know is more comfortable than the devil you don’t know. As a new GM it’s probably a lot of risk to push a managerial change.
2.) The reasons that were given are pretty good. Avila likes how he works and develops the younger players.
3.) Could be a simple as pre-evaluating potential candidates and believing you already have the best candidate based on your needs.
.
I also think that maybe the firing leak wasn’t as much as a leak as suggested. That it was intended to gage Ausmus reaction. Seems miscalculated and dangerous if thats the case. Especially if it was designed to humble him a bit. Because he appears to be more emboldened now.

I know that is the way it is in theory Dar but in practicality teams expect that the most veteran lineup won’t be out there.
Collins is not much more experienced than Moya.
I don’t see a thing wrong with playing the kid at this time.
I certainly would expect him to get some time in Chicago.
Not that it matters much but I hope we can win out the rest of the way. At least take 2 out of 3 in Chcago. If we end up tied in the standings keep in mind Detroit has won 10 of the 16 games played with the Sox this year (I think).

9-7

Not impressed with him on so many levels

Time to scout a possible target as FA: Gallardo

Thanks LT.
As to Ausmus, I just don’t get a level of confidence from him. In the dugout he looks like a deer in the headlights most times. Always seems to be reating to things rather than being ahead of them. He doesn’t grate me the way JL did but he has so much to learn. Therein lies the problem. He doesn’t seem to be ahead of that particular curve either.
Gose just struck out to lead the game off. Seems to me all you have to do with him is throw him a fastball on the outside and he won’t hit it.

Yea, I think we are starting to see a pattern. Just refuses to learn, maybe even refuses to acknowledge mistakes. I am sure you either have been or encountered people like him through your journey. So over there head in their job, they feel they have to put on a false set of confidence. What it ends up doing is preventing them from learning from people that could help them. And further sinks them. Because at the end of the day most people can’t falsify results.

Gotta give it to Collins he is hitting with a tonne of confidence right now.

OK Matty keep the ball down dude!

Gave it right back again. ……jeez

Did anyone tell Rangers fans they’re in a playoff chaise….how embarrassing for that team. ..nobody is at the game

Chase…..not chaise

I just checked in to the game. Is this a re-run of Tuesday night or am i in the Twilight Zone?

I know right

Not exactly sure what the strike zone is…..balls practically in the dirt called a,strike. …ie Rajai would of been safe ball 4 to Kinsler. …pitches right down the middle called balls.
.

I realize Boyd is definitely a notch below Norris in terms of potential, but he hits 94 and seems to have the knack of the art. He’s obviously not ready for prime time, but he could help in the not-so-distant future. At the minimum, Boyd provides rotation depth the Tigers haven’t had of late..

I like Gose and think he has the tools and is at an age where he deserves a patient approach. But, he is struggling with his hitting mechanics and probably his approach. ElT loves OBP. I think Gose is the type player who really needs to increase that measure to be valuable.

Okay just a little humor to bring to this fiasco… Did anyone see that guy in the LF pavilion try to catch Napoli’s HR? That nearly got him in the noggin’.

Boyd : 2.69 HR/9 is my math is right

Boyd has never impressed me. even in the BlueJay org. Even last game when his numbers were good I felt he got away with murder.
Norris has something that is exciting. I don’t think we are going to get that with Boyd.
Brings up another subject. All thes HR our pitchers have given up. How much of this is Jeff Jones’ problem too? I have not been impressed with Jones and am not looking forward to him being here next year again. As I said when Brad was confirmed again as manager, he is even luckier than Brad that the whole front office and media leak and all happened.
Would dearly love to see a guy like Ray Searage, Chris Bosio or Don Cooper handling our staff.
Hell for that matter they could give Mike Maroth or Henneman a shot.

Wow–Dan & Jim talking about base-running stats this year and are comparing the Tigers and the Rangers. Startling differences.
i.e. going 1st 3rd Rangers did it 110 times Tigers 69
Rangers have about 70 less base-running outs!!! Seventy!!!
Sure glad we have a specialized base-running coach eh. Matt Martin is doing a heckuva job.
Look at some of our base-runners like Gose, Kinsler, Castellanos, McCann come to mind as being basically brutal.
I have b een hearing some talk lately about team speed during the broadcasts and for some reason they seem to include JD along with Casty, Miggy, Avila and Victor. Yet my eyes tell me he actually runs pretty well. He certainly runs hard out of the box and has beaten out more than a few DP relays to 1st base. As hard as he hits that ball that should tell you something.

Even if JD is no flyer, I also don’t see him matched with Victor and the rest of that group. Maybe StatCast will prove my lying eyes wrong?

Guys received incomplete if didn’t play enough not fair to judge to harsh
..
High priced guys expected to do something judged more harshly than guys like Gose or Castellanos who are young making a fraction of a cabrera or a Vmart. Much is,expected to those who are paid highly and they deserve more criticism than a guy making the minimum

1. For the second straight night, the pen held serve.
2. The last play of the 8th. by Nick. I think he will be more than adequate as a third sacker, assuming his hitting keeps progressing into year three.
3. Two out RBI single for Collins. Still see him as a fourth outfielder; would do very well platooning and pinch hitting in the NL.
I really didn’t expect us to win this game; Boyd throws those watermelons to the big sticks, and that’s hard to overcome. Lobster had a decent outing, as did Ferrell. I agree with other comments in regard to Jones. Wish that Avila had given the returning option of changing coaches to Ausmus. I think Jones is one of the worst pitching coaches in the majors. guess we’re stcuk with him and Brad. Have no problem with Vizquel or the others. Bold prediction: We sweep the Sox and avoid last place.

Darlene- Do you need a front office job?

Ha Ha!

He knows more than Ausmus:
“According to Glenn Fleisig, research director for the American Sports Medicine Institute, logic dictates that a pitcher is fatigued more from a labor-intensive single inning than the same pitch count spread over multiple innings”

http://espn.go.com/blog/detroit-tigers/post/_/id/461/why-did-tigers-keep-norris-in-after-54-pitch-first-inning

That was an interesting take on an “inexact science.” I don’t think anyone doubts Norris began to labor when his velocity took a dip. The whole thing was tuff to watch, including the defensive misplays..

This is usually when some grizzled oldtimer will come in and say “Why, ol’ Mickey Lolich didn’t have no pitch count” or some such. I’m an oldtimer but of the ungrizzled variety. Anyone out there with grizzle?
Actually, it’s a complicated issue. I didn’t see those two innings so I can’t offer an opinion.

Yeah, Dan and I have already “grizzled” the pitch count issue a couple of posts ago.

First, do no harm

” These players, speaking on the condition of anonymity, believed the financial part of that decision didn’t marry well with the seven-year, $210 million contract given to Scherzer” I would avoid any FA from the Nats like radioactive material

Can’t help myself following the Jays and Mets and feel one is going to go all the way this year.
50-52, 52-51 & 52-50…..

Just curious here. Tigers have played 158 games and have 3 more with the WSox. That makes 161. What game was lost during the season?

Vs Cleveland.

Some of you might get a chuckle from watching Russo’s show on MLB. He played a video of Harper and Max re-enacting the Sheriff Papelbon-Harper confrontation. I think it happened during a rain delay yesterday.

Yeah, that was yesterday. My wife and I were watching the game and that happens. We just looked at each other and burst out laughing.
Hey, it would make a good handshake celebration!

Tabbies lineup: Davis lf, Romine 1b, JD Martinez rf, Castellanos 3b, Marte dh, McCann c, Machado ss, Wilson 2b, Gose cf. Simon p.

I guess they’re tanking it huh?

Well I would have Miggy and Ian in for sure. Maybe they want to finsish lower in the standings?
I understand playing Rajai but not against a RHP tomorrow (if that is the case). Sad to say but Rajai’s salary has to be divested elsewhere.
