Friday’s lineups: Tigers vs. Rangers

Alex Avila will catch Justin Verlander for the first time since July 24, when Verlander tossed eight innings of one-run ball against the Red Sox at Fenway Park to get on this roll. James McCann caught Verlander’s last four starts. Alex also has two home runs off Colby Lewis.

Lewis has had relatively good success against Miguel Cabrera, but those numbers against Victor Martinez counter it. Look for Cabrera to play first base tonight and tomorrow; Brad Ausmus said he’ll wait and see on Sunday’s series finale.

Ausmus has Gose batting 9th against the RHP.

As long as he’s hitting, we’ll settle for ninth…had a good hitting day, was it yesterday? I have a feeling this team is making a move for the wild card….Should make the rest of the season interesting….

Ya with 2 pitchers out I doubt even more they can contend. Heard on radio Norris at least 30 days maybe rest of season

Considering all the injuries and all the “issues,” I am hoping they can finish above .500 and in 2nd place. That would be a good sign for 2016.

I’m just looking for a good effort. If the effort is there, and it has been so far, I’m on board regardless of the results.
I think Kinsler is leading the way in that category, and I’m impressed. He’s playing like he’s on a contract year, but actually has two more years on it.

Rich, I’ve seen that out of Kinsler since the “deadline trades” and I have been impressed with his leadership and batting results, not so much in the fielding dept though. You always hope that the guys on the roster put forth 110% effort and I think we have finally seen that on the last 3 games. Shameless pitching staff all season but, this lineup can score 5-6+ runs a game and most games that’s enough. Here’s to a Tigers “W” tonight and a 4 game winning streak! Come on JV (Mr Upton), be a pitcher tonight!

Collins batting 2nd? It’s a mystery

Umps a dumb blind moron………1 run for the umpire

Hoping for the best tonight.L
Still marveling at last night’s game. It was so seamless and quick that I didn’t even realize the first hit occurred in the 5th inning. Didn’t even realize there was only 1 hit. Just got caught up in the game. Even Victor said after the game that it was a real team win.

.Tigers will need to give Justin some run support pretty soon.

Jobs you can get paid and stink

There’s a good website from deadspin “Better Know Your Umpire” look ato this umps Brian Knight” he had a big eruption with Leyland in JV pitched game and after ejected Leyland he started to go after JV . LAIRD held ump back. History there

I can’t stand umpires. There wasn’t much in the media, but Sabathia had to get after one a few weeks ago. I was glad to see it because Sabathia was correct. Jim Joyce can go to hell as far as I’m concerned.

I’m with you on Joyce even when people werected commending him for apologizing to Gallaraga. He made it all about him ..insincere as far as I’m concerned.

Going back to our old ways GIDP.

And this ump is one of the worst. And apparently still has a grudge or a bias based on Verlander vs Lewis’s strike zone.

Might have to turn this off I am very angered by this piece of crap umpire.

Here’s the thing Miguel should of beenew able to tag up on the fly ball from Vmart ….that out at home would of been irrelevant because he woulda been on 3rd and easily scored

The way Miggy has been running the bases, it looks like Nick has been working with him. JEEZ…

Not so wonderful base-running by Miggy. Got very lucky at 2nd base and should have been to 3rd on Martinez fly out.
Seemed like he was dead meat (was he sent by Omar?) and just about got lucky again.
Fun to watch though.

JV is not finished yet. Would not be surprised to see him up to 97 by the end of the year.

He has already touched 97 in previous performances

I’m more pissed at the scorer than the ump. The ump may have missed that JV pitch but it was in fact borderline and one that is not always called. It was more a bad break than a bad call.
The Iglesias play was an outright hit. Sure, he didn’t hit the ball well (back in the bad habit of lunging and swinging off front foot again) but Beltre is one of the few guys that makes that play. He double pumped because he was in full motion. Itakes a better than average play to get out a runner like that. And that is supposed to be the criterion for hit or error.

Darline, I should have said “consistently”. I have seen Anibal “touch” 97 but never would regard him as a true 97 pitcher.
I think JV will again be a true 97 pitcher.

I bet they change that error to a hit. And it may not be during the game that it is done.

A full house of fans just waiting to go nuts and the Tigers are letting them down. This team hasn’t won 4 games in a row since, I think, April.

The worst base running mistakes I’ve ever seen. OMG!

This just doesn’t look like it is meant to be…shitty umpire….bad luck crappy baserunning. …double plays

Dan, got your point on JV. To me, he seems to have superb stuff right now. JV’s secondary pitches are very good and his command has consistently improved . And most any starter would just love to touch 97, especially late in the game as he does. I think JV has adjusted to what he now is and has turned into a pitcher as opposed to a thrower.

That said, JV looks cooked to me.

I think the review process got us there. They likely called him out on the initial play which the ump (and Andrus) thought was missed.
JD has become an excellent OFer (significantly better than Torii was with us).
Should actually get serious Gold Glove consideration.

To win this game would be incredible. Things are just going against the club. It happens, it’s called baseball.

Danny funny how umpire is consistently making bad calls that benefit Texas and non of those bad calls seeme to be going other way. Jerk has an agenda and yes I’m completely serious….it’s obvious

Looks like spectator ok

Home plate ump ….still sucks here in the 9th

He had everything to do with the final score of the game.

I don’t think I can watch any more. That ump should be fired.

That’s it. Can we call JV a bad luck pitcher? Seems like he is pitching well enough to win some games but there has been little run support. How many runs has the team scored in his last, say, about 5-6-7 games?

I’ve been watching the re-plays of Miggy’s 2 outs. From what I could see, his foot was on the 2nd base bag before the fielder’s glove. The play at home was impossible to see. If the umpire saw his foot touch the bag before the tag, you would think they would back the umpire. In both cases, as some of you stated, Miggy caused these plays to be too close.

It was the kind of frustrating game that makes one glad the team is not in the playoff hunt. Can you imagine if this one had been really important?
I usually mark up bad umpiring to human failure, but in this case those bad calls were very one sided. Brian Knight beat us by himself. And then the replays……what a mess.
Miggy is my main man but I think he spent too much on base time chatting it up with anyone within earshot. I even commented about it before he started messing it up. It’s not a party, Miggs.

These horrible umpires are ruining baseball. It’s not right when a loss could have been the result of one bad call after another.

I am starting to like Feliz. He came in and efficiently did his job. Feliz threw smoke and sat on 98 with a mean slider at 85 to 87..

So the replay officials overturned the play at second on a call that the field umpire didn’t make. Or something like that. Whether the bag was touched initially drew no call at all on the field, but the twin dives at the bag did. Correct, I guess, but really weird.

Baseball, with its poor officiating and more and more rules is becoming NFL-ish. That’s the kiss of death to me. I hate NFL football.

It’s one thing to give a corner call;it’s another when the ball is 3-4 inches off the plate. Brian Knight needs to stick to day games, because he surely doesn’t see well at NIGHT!. This is one of those games where the officiating dictaed the game’s outcome; that should never be the case, whether we are in contention or not. Doesn’t excuse our less than pitiful approach at the plate tonight, but this is one pitcher’s duel that we could have won. Victor had two great AB’s for naught, and then the strike zone expansion went further in the bottom of the ninth, and everyone was left flailing; Knight should be blackballed. If he’s a grudge holder, have him become something more than a professional official, who like a judge, is supposed to be equitable to both sides. It didn’t occur tonight:
1. Mr. Upton should have won his fifth game in 12 starts. I look for a solid 2016 for JV.
2. Miggy gets 3 doubles, and is hitting about .364. He gabs all the time Rich, because he knows that no one is going to get him past second.
3. Julio has one golden arm.
Kudos to Verlander who has indeed remade himself into a solid top of the rotation type of guy. Kudos of course to Miguel, who despite the jabber, continues to amaze everyone with a perfect swing every day. Is there any truth to the rumor that a rocking chair has been put in the dugout for Wolf. Wishing him Tom Glavine type success on his 39th. Birthday start tomorrow.

Miggy Giveth and Miggy taketh away.
Knight was awful. I must agree. The 9th inning was blatantly bad.

Cepedes tonight: 5 hits; 3 HRs; 7 RBIs

Is that good?

Brian Knight went out of his way screw over the tiger’s hitters and JV on the other side. I just don’t know how you can see it any other way. Rich is right thank god the game doesn’t mean much. I’m still angry though.

The games could mean a lot if they kept on winning, though, but it doesn’t look like it’s going to happen. Miguel had a great night at the plate, but what good does it do when his base running gaffes cost us a run. I’m so tired of this team underperforming and making my self mad just complaining about it. I will watch Wolf tonight, and hope the players can pay attention long enough to get a win.

Sounds like you haven’t reached the acceptance stage of the grieving process. In a couple of weeks when the Tigers are in the same position as now, the temptation to hope will be gone. Then you can just watch the games, if for no other reason than you’ll miss them this winter.
I’d love to see Mr. Wolf’s start tonight but I have a concert.

There is still some fun to be had watching the games. Last night with the bases loaded, Miggy on deck, and Collins up, I said to my wife “Tyler can strike out, pop out, fly out, make any kind of out he wants, but don’t hit into a doubleplay.” On the next pitch he hits into a doubleplay and we both broke out laughing. That was fun, in a perverse sort of way.

I was saying the same thing. Hoping for another flyout to left.

Rich, which concert will you be attending?

This will be the venerable Gladys Knight with, of all people, the O’Jays. Next week it’s Santana, whom I haven’t seen since 1975. Saw the Punch Brothers last month. Eclectic tastes.

Lucky!!! She’s a show stopper and so are the O’Jays. Some good ‘ol Motown. Something our Tigers sure don’t posses.

Minus the Pips but Gladys has one (and still does) of the lovliest faces in Rock & Roll or R&B. (I heard it through the grapevine.)
