Saturday’s lineups: Tigers vs. Orioles

No changes on the Tigers’ end for O’s right-hander Chris Tillman. Baltimore, of course, juggles its order for lefty David Price, including Steve Pearce at first base and Nolan Reimold in left field.

A common-sense reminder for those who haven’t been outside today: It’s hot and humid, and it’s expected to stay that way well into the evening. If you’re going to the game, stay hydrated. The Tigers have sent out a reminder that fans can bring sealed bottles of water to Comerica Park. With this weather, it also makes sense to start drinking water ahead of time.

With Price on the hill the Tigers have a good chance at a win here.

Frisar: Don Kelly had season-ending Tommy John surgery 7/14

“Robinson Cano has his breakout game of season with two HRs and 4 RBI, and may just be the man to lead #Mariners back into playoff race.”

Do they need now the best framer in the game?
BTW: Flowers, the CWS catcher is the top framer in 2015

Gose is on an 11 game hit streak. He fits very nicely in the 9-hole with his offensive skill set. His BA is at .287 and he has 14 SBs. Plus, Gose can go get the ball in CF.

Come on Ausmus put Igloo at the leadoff and move Ian Kins down to the 5 hole, then Casty down to the 8 hole! Price, they need you tonight to get #10 with a strong outing!! CG??!!

Kinsler is hitting .349 at leadoff. I think switching the 1, 2 and 9 hitters have made a big difference.

Detroit’s weather is what we’ve had nearly every day this summer. Not fun.

I have voiced this concern before. Who is going to protect JD? The guy leads the AL in HRs.Kinsler is not the answer in the 5-hole. AA and Nick have shown flashes. Without JD being pitched to, his production goes out the window. Sooner or later, it will happen. Hopefully, Miggy gets back on track and then my concern turns only into lost angst. In the meantime?

Jim Leyland would say “I don’t believe in all that protection stuff” but that’s Jim Leyland. JD will need to continue to wait for pitches he can handle and clobber the mistakes. Even with Miggy in the lineup, JD is hitting 5th and being followed by those other guys.

Exactly, that’s my point. When Miggy arrives, pitchers cannot avoid Yoenis, Miggy, V-Mart and JD. They have to pitch to someome or major damage will ensue one way or another. Otherwise, the team is one hammer short. AA and Nick have shown flashes.. Weaver would retort with a 3-HR. Hey, it’s the AL.

Kinsler now has a 7 game hit streak.

Gose , Babip:529 over last 8 games

I already have hatred for this Umpire behind home plate.

Avila with his 350 OBP is there to protect JD. Has a high HR/AB rate too

The strike called to JD wont be called to a LHB. But it will be called for a RHB. The zone is bigger nowadays. And goes below the knees too.
As soon as he is consistent, the players wont compalin

Way too many pitches from Price.

Can’t these Tigers figure this pitcher out? Come on, guys, we need some runs.

It is concerning. Casty just can’t hit a slider down and away. Not sure why a pitcher would throw anything else—it’s that obvious.

Cy Tilman and his 5 era too much.

Iglesias saved him

It’s just too much. I can’t remember a worst 3rd baseman. I’m hating on him, I know, but he drives me crazy with his incompetence.

How many has Price struck out and you have that godawful 3rd baseman. No pitcher deserves that.

SO every RH that can pull the ball or Castellanos will miss it

Can’t go on. Period. These are the major leagues and the only way you can hide defensive inability is in the AL as a DH.
You canNOT win a championship with what Casty has shown us.
Not scapegotating him only saying this is not a solution for us going forward.
Sure wish we could hit Tillman. Price deserves better today as always.

JD 26.7 % SO . They will pitch to him

Iglesias 395/299/293/275. A/MJ/J.

267 last two eeks/288 last 28

Gose cant play defense now?

Who made the relay throw?

Rondón is going to Toledo. But Gose had to made that play

Not losing this came because of Castellanos. ..losing this because the Tiger’s hitters decided to make A crappy Tillman into Cy Young. …..
Mind boggling.

Things I found out:
Bruce Almighty is a bust
LT really does not think much of Gose
Tigers’ offender is always on the cusp of absolute impotence
Krol is the last vestige of the ill-fated Fister trade and a reminder of how brutal that one was
Casty is not competent enough to be a solution as a 3rd baseman at this level
If you can’t win with David & Anibal the team is toast
DD better wake up

This is probably the end as far as I’m concerned. Can’t let a pitcher like Price pitch like that and not win. It’s happened too often.

USA will face canda for the Gold Medal Tomorrow. Lennerton should be back to Toledo next week and Krauss should be back home

INCOMPETENT. …overpaid and underperforming. Illitch continues to open his wallet and because these ballplayers with guaranteed contracts have nothing to fear this is what you get.

It almost appeared that the team just let this loss happen. Tillman could have gone
another 9 +…there was no movement to rattle him, maybe bunt, sqwat or anything, with the exception swinging at pitches that were low and out of range…why not wait for a freeking strike….what a hapless effort. Slower and smarter pitching needed,
instead of the 100 mile ones down the middle. Let’s start rebuilding, starting
with our hapless manager and staff….good night and good luck!

Krol and Rondon in to hold a 1-0 winnable game? A real head scratcher. Price’s effort deserved a better choice. Hardy/Wilson would have been a much better choice.

I guess it comes down to to JV stepping up. The Tigers need to play .600 ball.

Harry Doyle: “One hit, that it’s! One G*d damn hit!”

You will be happy to hear Krauss will be back tomorrow and Machado sent down. Thank God I have to work tomorrow and won’t be able to watch. Something isn’t right with this team.

Yes. Our hitters cannot seem to adjust in game to a pitcher on a roll. Rod said they just weren’t able to pick up Tillman’s fastball……then don’t swing. And how many strikes did Britton throw? Why throw them if he didn’t have to? Golf anyone?

Ill itch has created an image of a philanthropist when in fact he is simply a businessman who wants to win whatever situation he is in.
He is not a saint or an angel but businessman with a failure to succeed on the business of baseball.
Failure defined by World Series success only.
The problem is more a result of his GM than anything personal

We didn’t lose because of Nick’s defense. We didn’t even lose because of Rondon and Gose. We lost because the whole team decided up front that they didn’t want to hit tonight. It was pathetic from top to bottom. Will you sometimes be shut out during the season? Absolutely. But when you squander a first inning scoring chance, and then decide to roll over, you see then that we are not playoff worthy. David worked hard, and gave his team mates every opportunity to break through. How many one pitch outs? How many two pitch outs? How much adjusting from appearance to appearance? None, I say, absolutely none. Even Rags goes up flailing in the wind, looking up to the sky on four pitches. I honestly believe the 15 lb of added muscle have made Nicky look like a robot from Star Wars. Machado and the kid from the Sox today, so graceful at third; I moan for Nick; a farm guy who had given us hope; kooking dim right now.
Marty made a great point. Why not use Alex in the ninth also? he’s only been the most dependable guy in a disaster of a pen. Still wouldn’t have won, or would the approach in the bottom of the ninth been different down by one rather than three. Games like this make me think that David would say, get me out of here quickly. So the one game winning streak comes to an end. I really wonder if tomorrow’s game really matters. The only way we get back in the playoffs is to pull off a 12-14 streak. I just don’t see it with Miggy out. By the way, Alexis one major joke of a major league hitter. He is killing this club along with the rest. So in all of this whining, what was to like:
1. Never out of the game, well theoretically anyway.
2. David Price’s gutsy performance.
3. Igloo’s bailing out Nick to save a run at the time.
Manny Machado is the real thing. Wouldn’t it be something to have a real thing come up for us and save the day? Well our real thing is coming back tomorrow; Krauss returns from Paternity leave, and Alex can return to the dish. Makes you want to pee in your pants, doesn’t it?

Greg, that was a very interesting take. Nothing to add to what has already been done and said. I’m just grateful for today and hopeful for tomorrow. Good Night.

So no one thought that Tillman pitched a great game? Nobody? We’ve had some surprisingly good starts from some of our lesser pitchers over the years but nobody ever said it was because the opposing hitters were chumps. Sometimes a guy just has all his pitches working on a given night, and we’ve never hit Tillman very well anyway.
I did think that taking a few pitches in the 9th against Britton may have been wise.
The strike zone was, once again, ridiculous. That guy drove Price crazy.

Not dismissing Tillman’s effectiveness at all Rich, just amazed that we didn’t do anything differently for an entire 8 innings. When you really fool Victor 3 times, your’e pitching well. It just seemed like a rollover to me.

Another chance to win tomorrow . Gotta cross that plate more than the other team. The next 2 1/2 months are going to drive some of us crazy .

Okay…I cannot sleep. Watching MLBN Peralta was big again. What a sweet 3B he would be for the Tigers.

He would hit 20 plus HRs with 80 RBIs. And, would be reliable defensively. I love DD, but he messed up by not bringing Jhonny back at minimum wage and as a backup SS, which proved needed last season.

Darlene you are correct on Jhonny . My 11 yr old niece has asked me about this matter so many times . Seemed like DD wanted him gone . He would not be without a team very long . His bat and glove are working fine in St. Louis .

Marty2 said the following. It’s so accurate it bears repeating:
” Krol and Rondon in to hold a 1-0 winnable game? A real head scratcher. Price’s effort deserved a better choice. Hardy/Wilson would have been a much better choice.”

i just feel like ausmus STILL has too much trouble w/ pitcher issues. he often errors & leaves pitchers in too long and he doesn’t always select the best relief guy for given situations.

They were losing. Feliz and Soria when winning. It is the standard procedure among managers.

Lineup vs. BAL: Kinsler 4, Gose 8, Cespedes 7, V. Martinez DH, J. Martinez 9, Avila 2, Krauss 3, Iglesias 6, Romine 5. Verlander starts

They’ve been holding bullpen tryouts at the ML level all year. Hardy and Wilson have won their spots. Rondon has been given his. Kroll is that Phil Coke guy we always seem to have. He comes in for one LH hitter and immediately gives up a blast that would have been a homer in nearly every other big league park. The sad part is no one was surprised.
I suppose they needed work after the break (sigh).

Roster question: why would they use up an option for Machado in this manner?

The option was burnt the first time he was sent back. They can call up him back and forth the whole season. And only one option was used

BTW: he has only one option remaining. He was outrighted off the 40 roster in 2013. He was added to protect him during the Rule 5 draft

Okay, thanks.

Still,it seems Marte and him were added only because they need 25 players on the roster. Same goes for Romine.

Why would David Price want to stay in the “D”? Why would any free agent starting pitcher want to come to the “D” with this inconsistent, inept offense mental preparation? This one hurts almost as bad as the Minny game before the break.
Rondon and Krol are not MLB pitchers.

Keep in mind that most MLB clubs are in the same situation. Some a little better, some a little worse. The Tigers aren’t unique.

I just read an article by Zuniga from the NEWS. He pointed out how effective Kinsler has been at the top of the order and how well Gose has been going when hitting down in the order. I made a similar observation about Gose on this Blog yesterday. So, ElT posted the batting order for today. And Gose is back in the 2-hole. I don’t get it,

Ausmus:”Gose up to No.2 to split up all the lefties.”

Tigers ate a ho-hum team with a ho-hum that’s baseball attitude. As long as you have that you will underperform its almost as though it gives them an excuse for failure that’s beyond their control.
By the way do you realize that they haven’t swept a series since the first week of the season. Hohum.

I hadn’t realized that. That seems impossible.
(Not the Ho-Hum part!)
DD is going to wait too long to make any meaningful (for 2015) trades.
I don’t expect brilliance from JV today but if he comes out and pitches horribly–well we most certainly are not going to the party in October.

A lot of teams need precisely what we need. There will be better offers made by better GMs to be sure but here is a very list of starting pitchers that may be available. Kudos to Joshua Howsam who developed souch a thorough and informative “project piece”.

Hamels, bad numbers vs the AL. Cueto and Kazmir like Hamels dealt with injuries this season. Kennedy and Shields have allowed 20 HR while playing in the most pitcher friendly park in MLB. Leake??? Chavez could be out for the season
Cueto,Gallardo, Ross,Latos. Those are the best options.
After the season, Fister will be a FA. And he will be willing to take a one year contract to rebuild his resume. He has been unable to recover from his injury. That is one pitcher I would like to rejoin the team. His ERA is still better than Greene or Simon ( or Porcello)

JV already too many pitches. Same as Price yesterday.

That about does it. Series lost?
