Saturday’s lineups: Tigers at Twins

James McCann gets back behind the plate to catch Alfredo Simon. That moves Marc Krauss up to fifth in the Tigers batting order as Brad Ausmus keeps a lefty bat between J.D. Martinez and Nick Castellanos. Rajai Davis gets a start in center against Phil Hughes, who’s giving up a slightly higher average against right-handed hitters.

Kraus 5th? really?

That’s a head scratcher.

I literally think batting Krauss 5th he’s trying to drive us crazy.

Hope & Dream Department.
I didn’t see the end of the game last night (thankfully). My guess is that Rondon overthrew his slider and couldn’t get consistent command with a premium fastball.
He has been hyped to the hilt for three years now. Time to move on Dombrowski.
Funny about Dombrowski–keeps trying to save money when he looks for relief. I guess he is getting relief, salary relief. Avoids the guys that are gonna cost big.
And of course, it costs the club big in terms of losses.
As to Krause, that whole thing is completely absurd and DD should be ashamed of himself for trying to foist that upon knowledgeable Tiger fans.
He’s probably good for another 3 Ks today.

Will Wally Joyner please get Iggy to keep lunging and hitting off his front foot? It is sometimes incredible to see such obvious flaws that go uncorrected. It is onl a matter of time until Kinsler reverts to his slow-pitch swing where he drops his shoulder and pops everything up.
We are wasting production from a middle of the lineup where guys like the Martinez Bros, Cespedes and even Casty have been producing.

DD picks up a guy to REPLACE Miggy who was waived because he struck out 70% with Tampa. Granted he is doing much better for Detroit as he has only struck out 6 times in 11 ABs.

Glad to see James back in there. Not sure I believe much about being the worst pitch framer or even what pitch framing is and how it is even possibly calculated.
All I know is he can run, he can catch, he can bunt, and he can throw and tag runners out.

“Tigers manager Brad Ausmus said he will look for a LOW-leverage spot to get Feliz into a game since the 27-year-old right-hander has not pitched since July 3.
The way things have been going that won’t be too difficult to manage.

A 10 run lead might and I mean might be a safe low leverage situation. And that’s a 10 run lead with 2 outs in the 9th.

Quickly and quietly they go.

I guess it’s going to be bad Simon. Either throwing way out of the strike zone balls or pitches or crap right down the middle. Still mad from last night….getting increasingly angry right now.

Apparently Simon thinks his job is provide contact for Twin hitters. Best way to endure that is to throw stuff over the middle of the plate belt high. He’s doin a fine job.
The question of the day is who falls asleep first, the viewers or the Tiger fielders?

Well, it’s a mid-leverage situation now.

Dozier pops up and Krause is 35 feet away from it. Did the same thing yesterday. What’s up with that?

5 hits in a row. Let’s hope that is Simon’s worst inning. Maybe the Tigers can still catch up.

Inning 3 quicker and more quiet. Congratulations…..

I think I am almost done with this one. Going a d digging ditches sounds more fun. 9 hits and were not through the 3rd. I could just cry.

Twins’ announcer: “Alfredo Simon looks like he is throwing batting practice”.
It doesn’t look like it to me . He IS throwong batting practice.
I felt this way about Simon in Spring Training. He just looks disinterested and boring. Kinda of a “who cares” body language. The pigeons have come home to roost.
Simon is done and unfortunately they will keep going with him and will not be able to rid themselves of him. The absurd back up plan will be to put him in the pen. That should improve things.
This is bad and our beloved team has shown once again that it degenerates into apathy and incompetence far too often to reasonably expect anything positive this season.

Ouch, 6 runs in already. Not easy to overcome that.

I swear Simon has to be throwing this way deliberately. A MLB pitcher can’t be this bad.

I don’t think the Twins would be deterred by a 6-0 defecit but our team is a deflated, defeated, dejected bunch of guys right now.
I think we will witness a horrible display of poor ABs from us the rest of the way.

Does Simon have options? You can’t just put him in the pen and go your merry way.

No, he has 5 years of MLB service.Release him and pay him to play foer another team is the sole option
FWIW: there are 18 pitchers with worse ERA including Aníbal and Porcello. There are worse pitchers.
He belong in the NL and his rcord was based in an abnormal LOB rate that was was projected to regress. Another swing and miss for DD. Too bad he had no patience for Suárez and alos lost Crawford
His FIP before the game was 3.94. His ERA 4.18. Not all was on him anyway

I can’t see how he could Rich. He is in his mid-thirties.

Nothing much more to say. We can always hope but they shatter that much too often.

High and hard, Low and slow. Learned that when I was in the minors…Little League minors that is. Every breaking ball Simon throws he leaves up., and they crank it. Please…pitch Romine or Martin or a hot dog vender, but don’t leave a guy in there that can’t keep a breaking ball down…

Last 20 IP Simon has given up 37 hits!! And 9 walks. That’s a WHIP of significantly over 2.00

It wasn’t a strike but pretty dumb move getting yourself tossed……..selfish

He’s frustrated GK, I can’t blame him. He was working himself into a favourable count (for him). Victor is a competitor and a leader. He sees his team needs some stimulation.

They need his bat……selfish I don’t particularly care if he was frustrated he’s gotta be better. He voiced his opinion a days didn’t let it go. Selfish. I get frustrated at work believe me you try dealing with the public…I don’t get to yell at anyone.

Hey. It’s not just Simon. He has 8 wins and 7 quality starts. Check the other pitchers on staff and compare. It is ALL about the pitching and all of the pitchers save Price and maybe a few others. The fact is, The Tigers have been the worst team in the AL since mid-May. Check the record.

Great. Third deck. At least it was Hunter. Can’t get too mad about that.

Depleted farm system. Farmer is the best option…

Gee, I got home just in the nick of time.

Thanks El T and Dan for answering my question about Simon. I temporarily forgot how old he actually is.

Simon’s overall stats don’t matter if he now gives up hits in bunches on a consistent basis. He pitched today; he’s the subject of discussion. They all get their time under that spotlight.

Gk, I can’t see how you can blame Victor. You don’t know what he said or didn’t say. He kept asking why he was tossed. It was Marty Foster with that idiotic strike zone all day. Either they can do this job or they can’t. Some can, others are incompetent. They they punish the guy they screwed over.

Nobody hates umpires more than I do and it wasn’t a strike but Victor got his 2 cents in but kept going. In my opinion he needed to think of the team instead of getting 10 cents in. And frankly I don’t care what either of them said Victor was important and he didn’t care. But at least he got his 10 cents in.

Some times in life you have to think of the big picture and bite you tongue and walk away. By not doing so he destroyed any even remote possibility of a comeback.

1. We won a challenge.
2. Nick had a great AB for a walk.
3. Feliz surprised me with his velocity.
Today’s game showed that the dagger from last night did it’s job. Maybe all the job talk for DD is an indication of indifference. Big Pasta sticks to the wall. And, it would be a total shock if Mr. Green Jeans survives the attack of Bunny Rabbit. If you didn’t watch Captain Kangaroo growing up, I seem incompetent, which probably explains 99% of my ranting on this Blog. I will give Victor a pass; we would not have won this game had he stayed in. In reality another game from Julio like we’ve seen recently would have put us right back in the fray. Tori knew for certain that Buck was going to throw the Hot Potato, and he stuffed it with butter and sour cream. With tomorrow’s loss we will be what our “Arthritis in the Fingers” Patient says we are-.500, nothing more, nothing less. But always remember, Dreams keep us young and hopeful, and so we can dream of a 50-22 second half. I will never stop being what I have been for 56 years, a fan of the team that wears the Old English D. Good night Mrss. Callabash wherever you are. Thanks Ernie for all those memories.

This game must have been UGLY to watch with Simon dishing up batting practice for 2+ innings! This team is very hard to follow this year and if not for the “hot” start would be competing with the CWS for LAST place. Over the years, It seems to have started with the lack of attention to the BP, then the degradation of the Starting Pitchers, then the lack of key hits and incredible amount of RISP/LOB with 0 or 1 outs. A couple more losses and they should definitely be SELLERS and try to replenish the farm system. I am done until after the A/S break!

Last season Jason reported thet DD said the O´s will regret the Miller deal:

Ken Rosenthal ‏@Ken_Rosenthal · 11m11 minutes ago
“To complete story on Eduardo Rodriguez trade, #RedSox took #Orioles’ straight-up offer for Miller over multi-player offer from #Tigers…

The players the #Tigers offered for Miller were at lower levels in the minors. #RedSox obviously made the right choice by taking Rodriguez.”

“I wouldn’t tell you the player, but last year, there was a reliever that we almost acquired who ended up being a very good reliever,” Dombrowski said. “I thought we were getting him. It never got out like this. We thought we made a tremendous offer. We thought we offered more than the other organization, but they went with the other player. Well I can tell you that organization wishes they didn’t go in that direction. They wish they taken our player.”

My bad, he was referring to the KRod deal with his regrets comment. But the link is about the Miller trade

JVI threw a wonderful game yesterday. Contributions from the entire line up. More big hits in key situations than I’ve seen all season long. 5+ runs per game for a nice stretch. Victor hitting the ball well. Kinsler, McCann,JD, Iggy, Nick, Yo, Gose and Davis, Romine’s level of play… lot’s of nice things happening. That being said, Simon’s history is becoming his legacy. He might make a decent BP addition, but to continue starting him? As far as Victor goes…I get it. I have to believe that was a leadership move on his part, as talent is not this teams problem…it’s all in the heart. And I guess I’ll count them out, when the scorebook says they’re out. There’s a reason why they HAVE to play all 162 instead of just doing the math…

Lennerton is playing with Team Canada in the PanAm games

They can’t throw Simon again at this point because it is well, pointless.
Not only does he lose he also taxes the weak pen and demoralizes his mates
Needs a change of scenery. How about Toronto?
Kraus epitomizes the term “stop-gap”. I have seen Lennerton Play and he can do a better job than Krause.
The Pan Am games will take two weeks- just enough time for DD to come to his senses

The no-drama inning of relief from Neftali Feliz was a bright spot today.

It was also pretty nice to 98

Gk, you definitely lead the league (or blog) in umpire hating but watch out. I’m sneaking up on you, cutting into your lead. I think I’m in second place now.

Also see the video on the ejection. Victor had his short say and was walking away when Foster said something to him. Victor turned around and was immediately tossed. Classic case of an umpire baiting the player. Foster should be fined or made to sit in a corner or whatever they do.

The same happened last Sunday to Vogelson with Phil Cuzzi. The ESPN in español crew sided with Vogelson, People go to the stadium to watch the players not the ump. Cuzzi asked Vogelson to come and them expelled him .

Nice to see McCann playing today. The kid has thrown out 14 of 31 Stolen base attempts. Numerous assists on runners trying to advance as sell as pickoffs.
The fact he is hitting almost 80 points higher than AA should, and I repeat SHOULD, give him at least equal playing time with Avila.

Betts, Xander Bogaerts and Eduardo Rodriguez .All under 23 years old. The best BoSox players. We got the one that needs years to develop

Just thinkin we were fortunate to get away with Mauer and the 1st inning and that Greene, unlike reports, did not look good when WHAM. ridiculous 0-2 pitch hammered over wall and here we go again.
Dombrowski’s off season moves to replace Max and Smyly are proving to be awful.
Hate the fact that Ausmus is playing Avila once again. He is brutal and unlikely to ever get his mojo back again
