Monday’s lineups: Tigers at Mariners

Though the splits are pretty even in a small sample size this season, left-handed batters hit Hisashi Iwakuma much better than right-handed hitters did last year. The problem the Tigers face, of course, is that they only have so many left-handed hitters. Thus, Alex Avila moves from first base back behind the plate, and Andrew Romine gets the start at first base. Marc Krauss, claimed off waivers Monday afternoon, is en route to Seattle but isn’t expected to be available. He’ll be added to the roster on Tuesday, at which point the Tigers will have to make a corresponding move.

Wonder if Moya wished he had learned to play some first? Did I read somewhere they were giving Collins some ground balls there recently?
Lennerton is apparently going to play for Canada in the upcoming PanAm games.
One very positive thing about Lennerton is he is an excellent defender.

Wagner:
Since June 9 @MudHens Moya is batting .259 w/ 8 HR (2nd in IL), 24 RBIs (1), 17 R (T7). Season totals: 12 HRs, 46 RBIs, 88 K’s. #Tigers

We need guys who can bang the ball if they are going to play a corner spot.

The way the Tigers have been constructed, they give up lots of production in favor of defense up the middle to support a pitching staff that cannot K people as in the past.

Oh I agree–whole heartedly. I think it is pretty apparent that Krause is not that guy either.

BTW–Price (no surprise here) made the All Star Team.

Iggy and JD too.
No Cepedes at this stage

With regard to Moya LT- he hit two more tonight

I made some comments a few days ago about the Tigers possibly becoming sellers and getting rid of Price, Simon, Avila, Davis, Cespides and Soria (as impending FAs) for young talent given the possibility the team cannot remain competitive until Miggy comes back. Since then, I have read similar takes on the News, Freep and M.Live. This scares the heck out of me. I want that window of opportunity to remain open.

They’ve already won a couple games without Miggy. I can’t believe they’d blow up the team like that. Sportswriters just love to write stuff like that to get people reading their articles and commenting.

Thank God for the players vote for the A-S game. Martinez and Iggy deserved their nods.

“Ausmus said the initial thought is to play Krauss against “some” righties, Jefry Marte against “some” lefties and sprinkle Andrew Romine in.” So Josh Wilson will be DFA?

The quote is from Fenech.

The Josh Wilson bit, mine.

Left-handed reliever Tom Gorzelanny has cleared waivers and will accept his assignment with Triple-A Toledo, I’m told

moustakas should be a shoo-in for final vote, if recent fan voting trend continues

I kind of think grouping clubs into “buyers and sellers” is a media invention, but at any rate there is much parity this season. Most teams are in the WC chase, at least at this time.
I also don’t think the “window of opportunity” applies to the Tigers, as their stated goal is to compete every year. There will be trades, but not a fire sale IMO.

I thought this game started at 11:00 pm. Surprise, surprise! Dan & Jim were talking about Cano’s health issues……….seems he has acid-reflux syndrome. It’s zapping him! I laughed out loud.

Simply Simon again. Avila better be ready for 30% of the pitches in the dirt.
This guy wears his catcher down and puts his infielders to sleep.
Feel sorry for those fans back east that intend to stay up for the whole show tonight!

No sympathy from me for Mr. Conceited Cano.

I Don’t see The Tigers becoming blatant “sellers” per se. Some of their moves will for al intents and purposes look like they are buying but in essence will bring salary relief.
Start with Avila. He is only going to continue to disappoint.

Better score a boatload boys. Simon looks like he is going to get bumped good tonight.

If I’m Brad Ausmus I am not going to go Gung-Ho With Alex Avila after his long injury. Let’s not forget James.

I think they’ll be careful with his knees.

Alfredo wiggles out of trouble for a few innings. ..4th spelling doom for him

GK You would think they would but they have been very guilty of abusing Alex and giving him too much credit as an irreplaceable cog in the machine.

Cano doesn’t want to talk about his “intestines” says Dan.

Honestly teams must just be licking their chops to face tiger’s pitchers. Even a crap hitting team like Seattle has put 5 on them and it’s the 5th inning.

Told my wife after the 2-0 pitch to Morrison that this game could well be 5-3 because he is gonna throw one that is going to sat on.
Simon probably should be the next memeber of our illustrious bullpen.
Unless we can foist him off on Toronto for some poutine.

I know who I’d trade. Good night. Hopefully pleasantly surprised in the morning.

Casty is officially hot!
Leave Gose hit and MAKE him bunt

When you don’t have the greatest pitching, you have to score runs. At least we are seeing that……….from both teams, so far. Go Tigers!!!!

These west coast games keep me up half the night . Tigers bats have come alive and that is a good thing . Headed down early doc appt in the morning .

12 runs at Safeco has to be a Tiger record. this game is a throwback to Kingdome era.

I think we got this!

Other than frustration with Simon, an enjoyable game. The Martinez & Martinez Wrecking Crew had a lot of help tonight.
Man, it’s late!

1. We scored five when they scored five; then we got four more.
2.The pen struts for the first time in a good while.
3. Casty’s very promising night.
Kudos to VMart, Julio, Casty of course, and our little buddy Andy Romine. Always does a positive for our guys. Also Kudos to Igloo, and “Little” Bruce. Just a nice way to open on the road. We’ll even give Pasta a pass tonight.

Hey, I’m pleasantly surprised. We win the first game game of the Seattle Softball Tournament.

It was a good win since the Tigers had trouble with Seattle last year . Gotta recharge and win again tonight . But the west coast games have me dragging the next day.

The failure to rebuild the starting rotation is bigger than the BP catastrophe.
Price and Aníbal and pray for rain
Since June 17, Aníbal has gone 7 or more 4 times. Price once( one rain shortened game)
Since May 29, Aníbal has gone 7 or more , 7 times. 4 QS

Yeah, I was thinking this last night: Dombrowski did a good job of building what was arguably baseball’s best rotation between 2011-2013. He did an equally efficient job of dismantling it. He’s done a poor job of selecting the replacements.
Right now, the Tigers have a good defense. Since they’ve hogtied their hitters in their own ballpark and the game has moved away from offense, there’s little else there. The saving grace is that very few teams are very strong at this time.

I can live with it all, except for not winning a World Series. We had so many opportunities and blew it. That’s the killer for me.

I’ve witnessed two. I attended game 5 in 1968 (Horton-Brock and Feliciano) and that first one was pretty cool, but everything’s cool when you’re a teenager. I was too busy in 1984 to follow closely. Then you have multiple days off before the 2006 and 2012 WS. A runner held at third during game two in Texas, 2011. Old Jim trudging a path to the mound in the 8th inning at Fenway, 2013. Hell, throw in Raburn, mouth agape and staring up into the Metrodome roof as he charges in while you mentally scream “play it on the hop!”
OKAY, everyone cheered up now?

I remember 1968 because I was a teen also. OMG, how I loved that team. In 1984, I also was busy with a little boy, who loved the ’84 team, and working full time. I know there was a long wait for the ’06 team to play, but that was their series to win. I seriously wanted to beat Leland up. Kenny Rogers, at his age, would have thrown 3 games easily. He had nothing to lose at his age. He just wanted that ring. I’ll never forget seeing a picture of Verlander, Bonderman, and Robertson leaving the clubhouse looking into the other room where the winners were and thinking they might never get another chance to even sniff at a WS in their lives.

Kinda wonder what a healthy Jose would have meant to the collective effort last year.

Don’t know, Dan. They did make the playoffs without him but failed there.

I kinda liked Jack Moriss’ insight during the broadcast but he does need to limit the personal stuff a tad more.
He was right spot on when critiquing Simon

I thought the same. Telling stories of “how it used to be” does no good here in 2015. He’s good, though.

Hey Tiger fans – was nice to wake up this morning after turning off the game after the 3 run shot by Seattle and see we made a nice comback win with some guys contributing you might not expect. Romine is starting to become someone you expect to get the basehits now.

As Ausmuns hinted last night, Wilson DFA

Hate to see Wilson DFA’d. He was playing decent baseball for the team. There should be an exemption for 45+ day DL to assign a replacement player not to count against the 25 man roster. Then they could add Krauss or Lennerton as replacement and still retain Wilson.
