Sunday’s lineups: Tigers vs. Blue Jays

No catcher has been behind the plate for more of Justin Verlander’s starts than Alex Avila, who has caught 111 of them over the years. If Verlander looks to Avila today, though, it’ll have to be on a pickoff. Avila gets his second consecutive start at first base, and James McCann starts at catcher.

Toronto isn’t the same club away from Rogers Centre; the stats are striking.
Let’s get the sweep.

Two misplays. The defense is not helping him

No real 1B,no pickups. Fielder redux

And I know, it was too high

Remember, I don’t have live action here in the boonies. Are you telling me that Iggy misplayed the double and Avila misplayed the pick-off?

There was no one covering the base and Avila cut the not so good throw to home. Having a better target could help JV. I t was like having Fielder again at 1B

Good 2nd inning for JV. Too many pitches to Martin, though.

Iggy kinda did. A Texas League hit then he whirled and threw a no-look to Kinsler which was too far off the base. Reyes (give him credit) recognized the opportunity.
Speaking of Iggy, he has not been looking good at the plate. Seems resigned to topping everything to the infield again.
Need to get him hitting line drives.

Gonna be tough for Verlander as the ump is not giving the outside of the plate today–yet.

Tiger hitters (Wally can help here) need to be selective and make Estrada throw pitches with the ump’s tight strike zone.

The impressive thing so far with Verlander is he is not getting wigged out by the ump. He is working around the problem of making good pitches not getting the call.
Must be frustrating but he needs to keep it up and eventually he will start to get those calls.

JV with Baker; 8 SO/BB. 2.57 ERA. Career. He worked well before with him at HP

Once not longer the Ace, the strike zone becomes tighter

Ishikawa was DFA. They need a real 1b to begin with

It could be worse, JV 6.84. Porcello 6.08 . So they are paying for only one underperforming starter

Big mistake to Travis who was literally diving out over the plate. Had to bust him inside on that two-strike pitch.
Actually looked pretty good today through 4 innings.

Lucky to have taken 2 out of three, this is kind of what I expected from the Jays all series long.

Terrible outing for Verlander. I figured this game would be difficult to win, also. It was reported the Toronto team all had dinner together at one of the Detroit casino’s after the game. Hoping the tigers can score some runs here.

Avila playing first is silly. Actually Avila playing anywhere is silly.

About Avila> Daddy says……….?

How long do we have to hear from Verlander that I’m almost there? That 5th inning was terrible giving up 2 HR’s and 94 pitches after 5IP! No longer the front line starter we saw for a few years. In fact, he may not be a starter for long if he wants to extend his career beyond a #3/#4.

Tigers will need a “temporary” 1B soon there really isn’t anyone other than Romine capable and healthy.

Tigers score 2 runs. Only 6 more needed. 4 more at-bats. Estrada 101 pitches. Jays’ BP? Think positive!

Gose works the count but never draws the walk. He’s had 15 BB all year.

JD HR!!! Only one problem. Bases not loaded.

3 walks. Not going well.

Both of those guys they brought up to the BP are not ready.

A LH will replace VerHagen after this game. i hope it wont be Krol again.

Why don’t the Tigers ever have a no-name rookie pitcher that the other team can’t do well against. The Tigers see those pitchers all the time on other teams.

Tigers need a couple pitchers. Verlander probably needs to pitch in Toledo until he can get it right.

Good luck, Devon Travis is up.

10 for 22 IR for Wilson.

5.1 SO/9. He is not fit to enter with runners on

I see 18 year olds in my home town that play far bettr fundamental baseball than we see sometimes at Comerica Park.

Avila missing the right base did not help wilson

JV needs to go to the bullpen…only problem is that the Tigers have no depth at SP. The management of the Tigers is killing this team. They are too stubborn imo. They were too slow in getting V-Mart healthy…still too slow in recognizing the issues with Alex and Nick and dealing with them…too patient with Joba…far too patient (years) with Al Albequerque…therefore they’ll continue to trust in bp arms that are unproductive…Gose who gives away at bats Like a clown gives out candy on Halloween…and they’ll continue to run JV out there every 5 days to get his butt kicked because he’s too proud to go to the bullpen. This team lacks leadership from the top down. Just my opinions…thanks for the venting time. Jeff

They’re missing Cabrera in the field more than at the plate. They need a real 1stbaseman and quickly. Don’t have Don Kelly this time.

Well you just cant assign anyone to play first base . Pro baseball does not work that way . Errors will start to add up and the fans will be wondering whos idea was this .We dont have enough time to try and figure out the bullpen .
Verlander isn’t ready to be starting but I think alot of us knew that .

Boy I’m not watching game…I was spending an afternoon on the boat. Yesterday all I heard was praise for Alex at 1st….today complaining. What happened?

Unable to scoop a bad throw from Iglesias.
Cut Gose ´s throw and went to 1B while the runner was wide open at 2B with 3b occupied

I want to see if the team pitches better with Avila behind the plate, as we’ve been led to believe. I would think the infielders can adjust the trajectory of their throws, as that’s been a problem the last couple of days. Muscle memory, and Alex is a smaller target.

We can discuss various issues into the ground, but this team goes nowhere without a bullpen. Gee, when have I heard that before, other than all winter?
Anyway, at the halfway point of the schedule, our .500 team is 41-40.

You know things are dreadfully wrong when you start to see Victor give away at bats. He never has done that as long as I can remember.
He is doing it now, his last 2 ABs in particular accentuate that.
I am not blaming or scapegoating. Just an observation.

Krol , unwisely, called up. 6 for 15 2 BB 1 HR in 18 PA vs LHP

3 for 6 IR. Little sample?same for VerHagen

The Tigers have zero relievers who can do situational work. They all need to start clean innings. Good luck making that work, Brad.

Nightingale: CWS not selling. And they are right. The Tigers would be wrong selling

I think it depends on the buyers market. If this team can squeak into the playoffs I think they have a shot at winning it all. Plus, they will keep filling the stands. There shouldn’t be a lot of motivation to sell other than to trade some high priced talent for cheaper alternatives.

JV: “I was seeing reactions from hitters that I hadn’t seen in a while, on my offspeed stuff. And it felt good. Felt really good about it.”

That is on DD. He had the right to keep Verlander in Toledo up to 30 days to end his Spring Training there and not in MLB

Those hitters were salivating after seeing your off speed stuff waiting on your fastball to tee it up and send it into orbit! You are not the pitcher you once were.

The smooth flow of the defense is gone. The no flow of the Bull Pen continues. Not surprised, always disappointed if we don’t win. Maybe pitch JV, 4 innings for a while; follow with Wilson and hardy. Bu August 1, maybe he can give something. DD is going to have a tough time covering this mistake of a ball club.
1. Goss shows power.
2. Julio is power.
3. Held Jays to 19 runs in three game! Ha, take that you Jay Fans.
No kudos; no nothing.

Blaine Hardy: 2 for 22 IS. 9% .Best in the team. Rondón and Ryan 0 for 3

They need a starting pitcher. Maybe with a third starter after Price and Sanchez, Verlander or Simon can do a decent job as number 4. I believe DD will get another pitcher, but who will it be? Is Brad Penny availible?

You know, I feel you guys who evaluate every thing from a guy not scooping up a short hop at first to other misplays on the field….other teams do it….so we didn’t win.
and you won’t win every game. This is a tough game with a lot of talent on both sides…trying to do each other in…..give credit to teams who prepare well….so far we prepare well 50% of the time.
Go enjoy the summer boating or fishing….
If you can remember….VMartinez was a catcher…also first baseman…DH
Give Aliva a break…get a life.
Even trade Miggy for Greinki.
