Thursday’s lineups: Tigers vs. Pirates

Rajai Davis gets a second consecutive start in center field with lefty Francisco Liriano on the mound. Bryan Holaday starts the day game after the night game behind the plate. The Pirates juggle their lineup, including a day for Andrew McCutchen at DH and a test for Starling Marte in center field at Comerica Park. Josh Harrison shifts to left, while Jordy Mercer moves up in the order.

Like a lot of Tigers Thursday matinees, this one is on MLB Network for viewers outside of Michigan and Northwest Ohio.

I remember all the indefensible defense that Henning proffered Ldyland when he was around. He now is in Act 2 with Brad.
No one can totayll blame this mess (and it is a mess) on Brad. Dombrowski is instrumental in the construct of this squad. Key players who have always been reliable have not been. New players have lost their mojo. 80% of the rotation has been poor. The bullpen is almost a comedy show.
But Brad is to blame for his handling of these guys. The top of the order. The pen. Pinch running. etc.
Everybody needs to get better.

The SP’s as a group have diminished to just Price and a below average Sanchez. JV is unproven yet and needs a few more starts to fairly evaluate his future production. Greene & Simon have fallen of the cart and we may not see Greene above AAA and Simon may end up in the BP or traded. The BP is just Soria and Wilson with Hardy showing up occasionally. The lineup 3-6 is capable but setting the table is becoming more difficult and they always seem to be coming from behind large deficit. My hopes for this season are dwindling and I would not be surprised to see this team finish at the .500 level or below. Are Mr. I and DD a buyer or seller this year? Too many holes to fill in my opinion. Enjoy today’s game, I’m taking a day off.

guys guys guys…don’t worry – everything will be fixed once we get alex back😉

Since the dawn of the internet, we have learned that baseball managers and head coaches of all other sports are idiots. That and what a selfie stick is.

K Ryan. Not a bad first inning. A few more pitches than you’d like. Tiger batters have to remember K Ryan is not D Price and will need some run support.

My spouse knows somebody involved in the Tigers front office. ….all they would say things are tense.

Things should be tense. This has got to be Kinsler’s worst offensive year of his career.

Great a hit……wait for it another double play. I’m just at a loss

Dear Dave. Please swallow your ego and take the first step. DFA or release Jabba and Gorzo. They are only depressing the team with their horrible pitching.

illini–I totally agree.
Tigers look like feces again so far today. Kinsler should either just pop out or strike out with a man on first. He would help the team.
The lineup really should change. Iggy is going stale at the bottom of it and the guys at the top are not getting on. Duh!

Anybody else notice Gibson doing “damage control” about the clubhouse. Everything is lose, like it’s supposed to be. He was there.

Guess getting embarrassed the last two nights isn’t great motivation. …liriano 35 pitches through 3 innings.
Sick of this allstar talk…other than JD I’m not sure anyone on this team is deserving right now.

The line-up. I don’t think the Pirates have used the same one all week. They adapt to situations. The Tigers’ lineup is carved in stone just like those markers in a cemetery.

Whatever it seems we (the fans) care a bit more than they do. Lazy ab’s …Quick and quiet. Meanwhile pirates grinding out their ab’s and playing like they give a crap.

@ Kathy> Kirk Gibson? Are they paying him to be a cheerleader?

Yes, he’s in the booth with Mario.

Again runners on and nothing nothing and more nothing.

Nice wide strike zone for liriano……good to be him I guess

I’m glad to see BA get fired up.

Man on third and less than two? If you are a Tiger the % are pretty low but if you are a Tiger opponent it is excruciatingly high.
I almost forget what a SacFly looks like If it were not for opponents.
Meanwhile our stupid hitters keep co-operating by 1st and 2nd pitch swinging. They are in a real hurry to get off the field as every moment out there must be embarrasing.

Many fans migt think they would just be glad to see BA get fired.

Funny how pitches closer to the strike zone are called balls for Tigers pitchers but miraculously called strikes for Liriano????? I’m confused

It amazes me how people think the pen is the biggest problem on this team…….to me it’s the Hitting. ….they don’t have a clue. Batting average doesn’t mean crap

Pathetic beyond words. They are putting me to sleep.

Liriano has thrown that slider all day and they’ve yet to pick it up. Must be a good one.

Or our much heralded hitters stink. They are a pathetic bunch.

I’m sure Kirk has many comments he could make about the Tigers, but will he say them. Nope, can’t do that. There is only one person in Detroit that tells it like it is……..Mike Valenti (radio). Love his rants.

I keep coming back between errands and chores but nothing changes except the Pirates score a run every inning. It’s hard for me to blame K (for Kershaw?) Ryan when there is no run support. Do you think he was brought up too soon in his career? I suppose since he isn’t another Price they will dump him too soon to ever find out.

A new job preservatin cycle for Joba. He is brutal when it matters losing games, blowing games etc but the will always be given a low-leverage situation in a game that has all but been determined he gets a chance to bail himself out and live to see another day (month).
I actually would like to see him get absolutely clobbeed again (face it this game is over anyway), so they can’t keep pretending he is going to be OK

2-6 need to get off their butts. I don’t approve of booing your own but they have simply done nothing. Pitching is part of the problem for sure but the way these guys are hitting you are requiring your pitchers to be perfect. Too much pressure to be perfect leads to picking at the plate and disaster. Hitters gotta hot too. They deserve just as much criticism.

Mososi: # Tigers have scouted and done preliminary work on #Marlins available starters. Miami has rotation depth to trade.

Okay. Sounds good. What does Miami need that the Tigers can give up?

They just want to go cheap.

2 on nobody out Vmart. ..weak popup really productive Cespedes weak flyouth Jmart 3 run homer too bad Cespedes or Victor couldn’t manage to get themselves on base.

Good luck getting 2 more runs!

Ump review? Not again………………….

3 has been on base 3 times. And now scores

Well that was short lived hope. …….

Nick is hitting .302 versus LHPs, but his swing showed some holes in it against Watson.

Can’t let the Tigers get too close to winning. The bullpen will help out. Now it’s Brucey-baby blowing it.

Hey ElTigre! Does Miami have anything living in their bullpen? A good relief pitcher? A mouse? Mold?

All having bad year but Brad Hand has good peripherals( dont look at his ERA). Chisek, Dunn used to be targets. I dont like them, GB pitchers

Fenech think and I too that they are scouting Haren. He is top 5 in IP since 2006. He was the leader in IP/season before JV

A pathetic series against a poor hitting team…the weekend against the Jays could just throw me over the edge. Truthfully I’m already over the edge. I’ll watch I just have to stop hoping they’re going ti do something. Jd and McCann are the only ones I have any faith in.

The Pirates averaged 16 hits per game in the series.

The better team beat us, for sure.

Just think. That could have been the tying run.

I never bought in to the Bruce Almighty bullpen redemption
Been through that with JZ

Ouch another loss for the Tigers . They start scoring in the 8 th inning . The losses are starting to pile up real quick.. Does DD have a plan B ?? Jobba has to go some where and soon .

Liriano had them fooled today. He used to be one of those high heat type throwers but has dialed down and focused on location. The guys were talking about current pitching trends and that pitchers are taught to throw down and away, but Liriano threw inside which isn’t done much any more.

Rondón, 3 goods outing, one bad. It happens. He is the made with the mold of good relievers.
Zumaya was an irresponsible , inmature guy who carried a keck with his hurt arm.
I see here and there pitchers throwing 100 MPH , one year after another . Why is he Zumaya and not the next Chapman? 105 MPH and still pitching
Is Rondón ready for high leverage situations? Maybe not, but beside Soria not one in that BP is.

July 2,2012:
Tigers 39-41 3.5 games back. That years ended in a ugly way but in a WS. The next day went down to 4.5 back.
The final record:88-74. But they were 2 games below 500 to begin with

Last season DD went Billy Bean. This season, he is going Cashman. GB pitchers and tight defense. It does not work

Had the game on tape. Dental appt. today. was easier than watching the game. We keep hitting new lows every day. Ryan is a AAA starter; I would make Alex Wilson a starter until Dave waves his magic wand. Again, so much major league talent in this lineup, and every pitcher thrown at us, made us look pathetic. I never have seen so many 1 pitch outs. There is a difference in an aggressive AB and a stupid one. We had some stupid ones tonight. Julio, the one consistent threat in our lineup, puts us back in the game. But Cousin Bruce said, “not so fast. We can get a sweep out of this.” I don’t know how the coaching staff looks these guys in the eyes. There needs to be some accountability. If firing all of them would stir the pot, then do it. The fans are being robbed right now.
1. Ian shows a glimpse of hope. Not counting GIDP.
2. Julio is a true all star. Right now the only clutch hitter we have.
3. Joba doesn’t give up a HR; wow, not even a run.
If we take one from the Jays, I’d be pleasantly surprised. If we take the series, I’ll be committed. If we sweep, We’ll win the Central.

This year’s team lacks leadership, vision, commitment to win and then execution. Boring team at the plate!! Mediocre or below average pitching! I hate to see Ausmus be the scapegoat but who else will light a fire under their asses!

They’ve had these long periods of malaise every season for several years now, all the way back through the Leyland tenure. The flame ignition of their posteriors will come from the players themselves if it happens.

The Tigers have played 13 opponents so far. Of those 13, they have a winning record against 4 of them. They are:
CLE 9-3
MIN 7-2
CHW 7-5
STL 2-1

Only two of the above teams have plus-.500 records. Detroit is losing to nearly everybody and has earned their .500 record. Subtract Cleveland and Minnesota and they’re at 23-34.

The roster has too many holes to be considered a good ballclub.

Scherzer, 3rd consecutive CG. Lost, Maybin with the walk off hit. That guy was saving himself with the Tigers.9-.6 despite 1.89

If Verlander could get it together, that just might be the spark the Tigers need.

Pretty much the same lineup as last year. …minus Hunter add a Cespedes. Avila gone add McCann. I guess Hunter is the big difference….

Ferrell called up. Joba or Gorzo should begin packing

Rich, agreed on too many holes to be considered a good ball club! Front line SP’s lacking, CF, 3B, relief corps (AlAl, Gorzo, Joba) in general, lack of plate discipline/strategy plan against pitcher on the mound. This may be a .500 ball club at best!

Collins, DL

In a nut shell…the team does not gel….no leader. If we had one, he’s no longer
there….Tori Hunter was probably the closest to it….maybe that’s why Minnesota
is doing so well…

Kathy, Verlander is not ever going to be close to what he was…unless comes up with
more off speed stuff…..and spend less time with Kate.

I doubt a girlfriend has very much to do with any pitching problems.
