Chewing yesterdays breakfast : McCann 3 for 3 in bunts attempts

“Nick wasn’t supposed to go. We were holding him,” manager Brad Ausmus said. “I think he just read the ball off the bat as being slow and thinking he could beat it.”
For far less than that Suárez was benched and then traded

Actually, he has 3 successful sac bunts in 3 attempts. PLUS, he has 2 bunts for hits.

That’s why yesterday I questioned the use of Gose instead of McCann by BA

MLBN panel including metrics guru Brian Kenney: Scherzer is the best overall pitcher in MLB. No kidding.

But change this bulpen never??? is a big disaster of the tigers in last years ..unbeliveble again Hardy chamberlain etc etc

Jason what do you think this bulpen from many years?

But Suarez was not a regular nor whas he nearly as highly touted.
I would not be heartbroken if the trade Nick. he is far too awkward to ever grasp the position adequately.
Here is a hint Nick: When there is a ball to your left be a javelin not a jack-knife.
use your full 6’4″ and extend yourself like you WANT to catch the ball rather than making it look like your trying with incomplete extension of your arms and torso. You have to WANT the baseball more than wanting people believing you are trying for it.

I pretty much agree with your whole take, except I would like to keep Nick and ideally (not happening) develop him at the appropriate level of play. Nick may not be the regular 30/90 guy DD has in mind, but he definitely has the POTENTIAL to be a power corner with adequate defensive skills.

They’re still discussing the pinch runner thing. I agreed with the move, but my reasons were that Joba was going to blow the game in the 10th and Victor’s slot wouldn’t come back around anyway. So of course, it does in the very next inning. This is a weird season.
Anyway, I’ll be elsewhere tonight but will try to follow if possible. Enjoy the game, folks.

Awesome a leadoff homer for a guy who doesn’t hit them except against us apparently.

17 homers Sanchez has given up. Geez

Sanchez is horrible at giving up HRs. #6 in all of MLB. Where is his adjustment?

Second in MLB tied with CC, Lohse, Hughes. Throw strikes, HR will come

They are all sucking. I’m curious. Why are you so defensive? Suarez and now Sanchez. Is it a Latino issue? My family is 40% Latino and 2 of my grandchildren are Black. We are pretty much the United Nations. I don’t mean to offend you in my comments, but I think my opinions are as worthy of consideration as anyone else’s and I don’t care if I am commenting about purple people..

Yo said 6th , I said second How comes is that defensive?
Rajai is not latino as long as I know. Neither JV another player I root for for the same reasons most hate him. Or Hardy.. I just argue for good players that have one bad game here and there.
Suárez? Castellanos is Latino too, never liked him. I pointed the double standard with Rabunr/Boesch more than once
Avila is Cuban , never a fan but I was his sole defender as mitt only catcher.

Thank you for your explanation. I really like baseball and opinions and debate. I guess you need to deal with things as you see them.

No, tied for 7th in MLB per my check just now. No matter how you cut it, it sucks. What is the issue for you? Is it good becuz others are just as bad?

Meanwhile Porcello, 5.26. Up 2-1 . 13 HR allowed. Dodged a bullet

Cy Quintana…pitching with ease so far.

Victor looked pretty good running 1st to home there.

He sure does. Needed that DL so bad and was just being stubborn. Now, we have our real Victor Martinez.

And that’s 18 on an 0-2 pitch. Haven’t won once this year losing after 4th. Jeez geez and damn.

Put it on the board. Sanchez needs to keep the ball down, way down.

That one abreau hit waant a bad pitch but the others ick

Jd on a hr terror!

JD! Since I am the only one still commenting Great job for a Latino. My family loves you.

Really Soria…he hasn’t been so good lately either. Not a lack of use anymore. Hopefully he can hold Garcia at 2nd.

Nope….well placed single

Thank you Lord

Do not like Morris on the broadcast…

Fabulous game for the hometown.

Not boring. Tigers won. Need a shutdown closer.

Soria was 2nd choice to begin the season.
I liked him better than Nathan but DD missed the mark not going after a ready to rock & roll closer
It was encouraging to see him dial it up to 95 but would be nice to see more of that slow curve.

BTW, I hope Victor’s knee is OK
He may have tweaked it nearing home

1. The 11 pitch AB by Victor. By his third trip to the plate, he had seen one third of Quintana’s total.
2. Game never got away from us. A little better with clutch hitting.
3. Bruce’s solid 8th. Keep this up and Joba will become a mop up specialist.
Kudos to Miggy, Julio, Rags, and even Nick. He’s looking better at the plate; more plated discipline and patience. Take away the gophers and Anabal would have 8 or 9 wins. Hope the Ryan Express can go at least six. Not holding my breath.

highly enjoyed the game last night. i must have laughed for a full minute on the miggy grounded to the wall. made garcia looked like delmon in RF

I saw a little puff of dust come out of victors knee half way from 3rd to home. looked like jeter’s ankle a few years back.

Haven’t heard from Jason for a bit. Miss his info and updates.

Jason gets some days off during the season. I was actually surprised to see the lineups posted here yesterday. You see his alternate writing the game stories on the main site.

Nick has been dynamite with the stick over the last 7. I say plenty of silly things and I hope my comments about Nick not being ready turn out to be more of the same.

With Ryan slated to start today and Verlander’s rotation slot still in flux, our best result today may be a rainout. Odds look good for that. “I Wish It Would Rain” – The Temptations.

That’s ugly. The defense and luck are probably the only factors keeping the ERA in the middle of the pack.

I have always relied on ERA, but some of the new metrics may actualy be more useful. i.e. Drew Hutchinson for the Jays is 7-1 and yet has a 5.33 ERA
How is that practically possible?

I rely on traditional stats despite familiarity with metrics. No system is without flaws and visual evidence is important. Be wary of defensive metrics because as a science/art it is not as refined or accurate as its offensive version. Peripheral data and small samples can be misleading. DD has spoken out about metrics and uses it, but values traditional stats and scouting, not to mention his own eyeball take on things.a

i am certainly no stats expert and do not wish to be patronizing, just helpful. FanGraphs has some tutorial articles as well as links to other metrics sites you might find interesting. At the very minimum, the metrics stuff gives me a fuller perspective on what I am seeing on the field and sometimes causes me to change my mind about what I thought to be true.

A serious fan adapts and allows change. You strike me as a vry serious fan.

Seems like they could have postponed the game for a couple of hours. There is no rain west of Detroit.

No… rained into the night. Actually Detroit got a lot of rain but it was also the wind. The storm system actually didn’t come from the west but circled from the east. It was aweful. West side of the state didn’t even get the ick we got. Still a lot of people without power.
