Friday’s lineups: Tigers at Yankees

The bad news for Justin Verlander out of Thursday’s rainout, as I wrote last night, is that he gets washed into the spotlight of Alex Rodriguez’s chase for 3,000 hits. He’s one away, and don’t fool yourself into thinking it won’t be any big deal at all. Even people simply looking to see the crowd reaction see something here.

The good news for Verlander is that he has Victor Martinez back in the lineup trying to support him. V-Mart slides back into the cleanup spot he has owned since Prince Fielder left. Yoenis Cespedes and J.D. Martinez stay in their order, sliding one spot each. Bryan Holaday gets the start at catcher, as he was scheduled to do last night.

Reminder: Tonight is an MLB Network broadcast outside of the Detroit and New York markets.

“Atlanta has tried to trade third baseman Chris Johnson, even offering to substantially pay down his contract.”

He and Ramírez are the only options available at 3B. Castellanos will be a fix for a while

Enough is enough, bench him forever

ElT, Casty could be the future DH and potential 1B/DH/OF slot as his offense should continue to improve over the near-term. If they trade him, not certain they will get great value for Nick?

Probably. But right now, no options in the market

Of course a pop up is a homerun

Better get some runs in for Verlander.

Holaday comes thru. I was just dreading another GIDP.

So nice of JV to let A-Rod hit a HR for his 3,000th hit. I, too, was concerned that we were going to see no clutch hit until Holaday came through. Has anyone else noticed that Gose is just simply not an RBI hitter? Can’t remember the last time he drove in a run.

Nick is no super star. But when you look at Headley’s stats (he leads MLB 3Bs in errors) both defensively and offensively, Nick doesn’t seem that horrible dollar for dollar.

I can’t believe I just said that.

Verlanders serving up meatballs. ..was right down the freaking middle. One thing to give it up tp Arod another to give it up to a little punk batting in low .200’s.

Oh, come on now, JV. Another HR from a .235 hitter who has had only one other HR?

HR, single, single. Is this telling us JV does not “have” it tonight?

Well, I guess Lobstein should heal soon and can take JV’s place in the rotation.

Miggy looks pretty bad so far. Striking out on pitches well out of the zone.

Miggy 2 SO’s? Is it dark in NY already?

Boy bats looked ok through the first two innings. Well pretty sad sinc. Come on guys.

Fans always need blame for all the teams ills. Grilli, Inge, Raburn, Valverde, Coke, Nathan….now Joba and Castellanos are responsible for every loss. A lot of 1st place teams have batters worse and worse pitchers than those 2. It’s a team sport.

another HR (sigh)

Continuing to serve up meatballs…..JUSTIN

Well, they have their 2 runs. Is that it for the night? Cy Warren pitching. Who?

Too early to call. Just his second game of the season. The batters are in full form

None was a HR at CoPa

Never give the first out at home

Gotta be kidding me …..running into out at home

Illegal blocking

Don’t deserve to win when you play dumb baseball. Kinsler ruined a nice base-running effort to get to 3rd with nobody out (the whole idea) and then his mind goes numb with two on, no out and Victor due up.
Another game where our hitters don’t take advantage of the short porches whereas the opposition thrives.
JV looks like he is never going to be the guy we all secretly hoped he could be again.

Warren beat the Tigers earlier this season, but gave up 4 runs in 5.2 innings.

Ausmus failed non challenging the play

NC = DP. I’m tired of complaining.

Tigers specialty grounding into double plays.

Don’t like what I am collectively seeing. I feel the Tigers are going into another swoon.

Yep……theyve been an underachieving bunch so far this season. I’m sure Mr. I isn’t happy

I like JV’s spunk at wanting to stay in the game. But I’m not sure that is in either his best interests or that of the Tigers.

Must be nice to have good hitters and baserunners. That’s all I have to say.

Cespedes did not like was Gose did even if he is the OF captain. This team could implode and Ausmus tenure will finish soon than expected.
Kinsler, Gose Castellanos, the BP (but for Soria, Hardy and Al2) .are the problems

Verlander wont be in form for a while

Seriously I thought Ausmus was supposed to be smart. He brings in a lefty specialist and not a very good one this year to face 2 righties. Not that these bums are going to score enough or anymore runs. But come on.

Gorzelanny is headed for Toledo (or elsewhere), option or no option.
He is completely ineffective in any role assigned. Other than the game is virtually over so we need a Bozo (or Gozo) to eat up some pitches.
Tigers look bloody awful today.

They have actually visibly given up.

I guess Iglesias didn’t like any of the pitches Warren threw right down the middle. Guess it’s starting to effect him too. That’s looked really bad. Guess they just want to get to dinner.

A shaming.

So long, and thanks for all the memories Gorzo

In all defense of Kinsler….he could have scored safely, if it were’nt for a bat in his path( slowed down enough) to get caught at the plate….Tigers luck all bad!
Verlander kicking the batted ball was no help either…..They need to clean house.
The pitching coach must be screwing these guys up…how can they all be bad….
Where’s Denny McClain? or better yet, Jack Morris…..

0-26 when trailing after 7….0-29 when trailing after 8 this year. No grit…no motivation. .no mojo defeatest? Embarrassment to their owner wasting his money and wasting our time.

The team is trying TOO hard and it’s ugly. The only hitters who have driven in any runs lately are Cabrera and people off the bench. Holaday has the only RBIs tonight. Those NY homers were cheap, but they play to their ballpark, something the Tigers can’t do in their poorly conceived home.
I figure that if they stop getting all these unlucky bounces and bad breaks, it’s a .500 ballclub. And I may be shooting high there.

I don’t spend much time pondering the trade deadline, but I haven’t heard anyone mention trading Avila at that time; whether buyers or sellers. We have two future catchers in place so why would you let Alex walk away for no return?

I think he may be consisered damaged goods. His offense is not exciting for a LHB and his knees are arguably ready to play another position. It would be nice to get something for him but he will likely be firmly exconced into a mostly regular role by the man who wears the blinders in the dugout.

Good point about Avila. And if the Tigers are even entertaining the idea of giving him another contract they are crazy. I don’t care who his dad is.
Very hard game to stick with tonight, more of what we have come to know.
I notice that from time to time the size of Comerica Park is mentioned here. I was hoping when Miggy signed that last contract there would be changes to the park. Why not give Miggy a hitter friendly park and make the most of his power? To not do it is just wrong IMO.

Avila: they’d be crazy NOT to trade him and he still carries the rep of an excellent receiver. I think they can get value in return if done intelligently.
Comerica Park: we have a number of hitters with tremendous CF power, while the visitors do not. All the club has to do is run a fence from the current permanent walls near the scoreboard and across to LF. They can even put a cool picnic area in the newly created space and charge an arm and two legs to dine there. Call it MIggyville or something.

1. If Nick had any sense, he’d plead for first aid at Toledo.
2. If Kinsler had any sense, he’d be a really good ball player.
3. If Igloo only batted what Nick is batting, he’d be a plus to the team.
4. If JV would leave Kate at home, he might have more baseball on his mind. There were a few positives, but as already stated, it’s going to take 4 or 5 starts just to get in the groove.
5. If DD knew how poorly Tom was going to pitch, he would have resigned Papa Grande.
6. If VMart ever gets back to 75% of last year’s performing, we’ll be lucky.
7.If Brad is so smart, why does he do half the things he does?
No kudos.
1. Igloo defense.
2. The Holladay Hit.
3. JV’s growing up. Looked and acted like a more mature individual.

Woke up again with bad baseball hangover, these guys are killing me.

RE: Avila beside some zealots and his dad he has no fans. So the few people that value him wont like to see him traded
But he does have value, some obscure stats plus OBP make him a good target for teams that like framing. But ,do they need a catcher?
Kinsler? he should have been traded when his value was high like I expected all the 2014 season but then DD traded every IF in the system.

It was good to see Verlander talking pitches on the mound with Holaday without screaming at the rookie

The Tigers have scored 2 or less in 28 games. 29 times in 2003

Well sure, that 2003 Tigers powerhouse was ‘roided up.

There has been speculation in the Boston press and MLBTR that the underperforming Sandoval should be moved and that the Red Sox would pick up salary. He has been a clunker on defense and his power numbers are poor for a guy playing a power position. Again, as like Headley, Nick doesn’t look that horrible compared to him, dollar for dollar.

Nick doesn’t look horrible, he looks like someone who needs a confidence boost.
The organization built him up too much and now some fans are disappointed.

Rich… As I’ve said before, it’s not Nick’s fault. He was built up as a phenom. He’s just not ready to assume the role and needs steady work to develop his skills. The problem here is Nick has been thrown into the fire with a contending team. A bad place to be for the club as well as for the player.

Like Avila, Porcello,Smyly, McCann, and they did well. He has no talent but his bat

Gose CF, Kinsler 2B, Cabrera 1B, V. Martinez DH, Cespedes LF, J. Martinez RF, McCann C, Romine 3B, Iglesias SS
The man is stubborn. Automatics out to set the table

“That fueled speculation that Machado was preparing for a promotion to Detroit, where he would take over at third for the struggling Nick Castellanos.
That may happen at some point, but it’s not why Machado is working at third”
