Saturday’s lineups: Tigers at Angels

About as big of a sports Saturday as it gets in Anaheim, where the Ducks and Blackhawks are playing Game 7 of the NHL’s Western Conference finals on the other side of the freeway at the Honda Center (you can see it out beyond left-center field). That matchup begins a couple hours before the Tigers and Angels get at it here at Angel Stadium.

As recent history has shown, Game 7s can be low-scoring affairs. We’ll see if Game 3 here at Angel Stadium is any higher scoring than Game 2. Jered Weaver, who has posted one-run outings against the Tigers in each of their last two meetings, gives Detroit its first right-handed starter to face since Tuesday. Anthony Gose, who has never faced Weaver, moves back up to the leadoff spot, and Tyler Collins gets the start at DH, relegating Rajai Davis to a reserve role for the night. Nick Castellanos drops down to the eighth spot in the batting order.

The Angels, meanwhile, have brought back Efren Navarro, who went 4-for-9 with a two-run home run and three RBIs against the Tigers here last July.

A small slice of humble pie for Nick, served along with a scoop of “message”.

A pitcher like Weaver is going to have Nick as an appetizer, served with a glass of Low & Away.

Cabrera, Cespedes, and JD hit better againt RHP. I would bench Cespedes , or at least bat him near the bottom, vs LHP

It happens to the best:
Times Shutout by Opponent , Tigers: 2
Dodgers: 37-inning scoreless

anyone else remember that carlos guillen belt to deep RF and the way he looked at weaver? good times!!

Absolutely. And Weaver really seemed to enjoy the moment.

Jason Beck is “like an endless abyss of questions,” according to Ausmus.

Good to know. Sounds like he is performing the job of a journalist as opposed to that of a Tigers PR man.

FSN sure has a lot of koolaid drinkers

That Carlos Guillen homer was sheer enjoyment for us fans. Back then I loved the Carlos & Magglio combo, they were fun to watch.

“Angry Fan” making an appearance on FSN pre-show.

FSD, sorry. Gave me a chuckle, anyway.

It was safe

He looked out and it certainly wasn’t enough to overturn. Not smart it’s not like he’s fast

Nighty night. .. can’t score 1 run let alone 3.

Castellanos 25.6 % SO. JD 28.9 Gose: 26.8

Are you kidding me????? I had hopes of Tigers winning this.

He is MLB ready:
Bruce Rondon pitched a three-up, three-down inning for Triple-A Toledo tonight. 15 pitches, one strikeout.

Rondon is not going to make a difference for this team. Angels have 5 HR in 2 innings. Cabrera foolishly tries to stretch a single. If he had stayed on first base, would Cespedes HR have brought in 2 runs? Then another potential rally killed by a Kinsler GIDP. Greene had nothing. Unusual for him.
.
At what point does something drastic have to be done? Many fans are really down on them. Illitch’s money is being wasted. It is time to FIRE Ausmus.

Not sure what Miggy was thinking of . They need a team meeting and to try and fix the club and now . Hitting, pitching and base running are all sub par . The part that bothers me is there is no emotions shown from the coaching staff .

That Fister trade is looking even worse.

Well I certainly think a Kinsler demotion makes sense. He is not getting on base in front tof the middle of the lineup. Move Iggy up!

Kinsler 1 pitch out. Cabrera 1 pitch out. That’s right, hurry up and get this game over. They don’t want to play for Ausmus anymore after his stubborn bone-headed line-ups and foolish BP moves, especially with Nathan and Jabba. Then he really de-moralized them last Sunday by leaving Anibal in the game too long. Conclusion> FIRE Ausmus.

Wilson is sure a trooper…..what a nice surprise he is. Thanks to Alex for being there when needed.

Irony. Bull pen is now the best part of this Tiger team.

Castellanos is killing us!! Absolutely pathetic both he and Kinsler showing absolutely no energy whatsoever. Two black holes in the line up tonight that have just killed us up through the 8th.

I actually thought we would win this game tonight. There were enough baserunners to set up a miracle win, but the big hit never came through. Sadly, guys were hitting better individually, but no one stepped up.I don’t think I’ve ever seen 5 homers by a team before the second inning was over. Shane had no command, and laid big fat tater balls over the heart of the plate for the Halos to feast on. Once again, Brad waited one batter to long to go and get him. This is getting to be old and unacceptable. Kudos to Julio and Yoennis for at least being tuned in tonight. Igloo continues to play All Star defense, and gets a nice hit or two. Really need to move him up for a while. Hopefully, the HR by Ian gets him out of Neverland. Nicky has already laid claim to that spot. Miggy’s one excuse me AB killed momentum, as well as wanting to be the 250 lb. version of Rajai in the first inning. We were chipping away on the lead inning by inning. The Hero of Heroes tonight is Wilson. He saved us from being totally humiliated again.
1. Wils/Hardy stand tall again.
2. Had ample time and chances to tie or win the game.
3. The McCann double.

….It aint easy being Greene. My
goodness, did he get clobbered!
Costellanos, he’s not to bright..always trying to be a hero….indeed he is killing the team…not thinking clearly….that upper cut swing
is telling. He continues to take close pitches for third strikes….He’s very disappointing….Kinsler finally came through…too late….
Anyway, at least they made it close, this time
Maybe tomorrow
The relief was excellent until Albequerque….he makes things so difficult.
Is it me? or is Weaver some kind of spoiled individual….his attitude really
sucks, It was just the way he walked off the mound….If I were Sosa, he’d be gone!

Other than whatever was going on with Greene (tipping pitches?), we beat ’em 6-1. So-sha (I’m not looking up that spelling) usually has one trick up his sleeve for the Tigers. I saw some positives tonight. We win tomorrow.

Why didn’t Rajai bat in the 7th for Gose? Why doesn’t Brad give Romine some of Nick’s playing time?

The reliever was RH and Davis cant hit RHP

I thought they brought in a LH pitcher for Gose. I remember before Gose grounded out Rod saying Gose hits left handers at .160 or so. But, I suppose they would have brought a RH in instead, he had the RH ready for Ian.

Ohh and I never thought I’d say this, but I miss Avila.

McCann is doing a pretty good job. They need a starter ( Greene , 4.39 Minor League career ERA), JV back and VMart back.

Again, a pitcher hits Harper and gets a free pass. MLB is way wrong with him . He is the future of MLB not the over-hyped, boring, nerdy stats fueled Trout

I did get pretty tired of Rod Allen gushing over Trout the last three days. It will get worse tonight with ESPN. I wish I could turn the announcers off.

Fielder has played 40 games a DH. 10 at 1B. Miguel was wrong moving to 3B.Had he said no, no signing or Fielder was forced to play where he belongs. Ego can be good for a team

Coke signed by the Jays, of course

1: 35 PM Verlander is back with Tooledo

With Toledo at Victory Fields

A little hitting yesterday. Some optimism generated. Does not change the lack of a power LHB. Strengths and weaknesses perceived and real: the bullpen. Apparently it has been considered to have been good. Personally I feel it is still unreliable and ready for collapse. Rondon coming back–who goes? Maybe it should be Rondon himself. The guy is s China Doll and the 100 MPH fastball is no good if A) hitters hit it and B) if he can’t throw it because his arm is wratched. He is young and another team may well want to take a flyer at him.
Somewhere along the line they will have to give Krol another crack at the job too.
Lack of hitting and yet if you look at the bench what do you see? Two middle infielders a back-up catcher and a marginal AAA outfielder. Avila and VMart coming back should help to address this issue.
I still think it would be wise to entertain the idea of trading Rajai if the opportunity presents itself. Rajai’s history of not hitting RHP precedes himself. He is in his mid 30s, poor arm, questionable defense and diminishing speed. Yet he could be a piece for another team. Perhaps one with a surplus of power LHB?
How long does the franchise wait on Castellanos? He is on the verge of blunder wherever he is on the diamond. Be it in the field, at the plate or on the basepaths.
He is never going to be even a top 10 MLB 3rd baseman. He is young though and maybe there is value there. Is he coachable? I am starting to think perhaps not.
Not sure what to think of our rotation. Greene has had some pretty awful outings. Doesn’t seem to have a dependable two-strike pitch. Lobstein even moreso.
I am like a lot of other fans I expect when I say that Anibal is going to come around. Then again, he has had some serious issues with home-run balls this year. He is pretty much a key for this rotation.
The almost unbridled optimism we fans enjoyed at the beginning of the season is in danger of becoming resignation and fear.
Sometimes I look at Miguel and I think “Is it even fair to have him playing in Detroit”, where the pressure of leadership and the dimension of the field may not be suited to him. Can you imagine him on a team that is relaxed and capable? Or a ballpark that allows him to be rewarded for almost every well-struck ball.

Lombardozzi grinding his AB vs JV. 8 pitches

Verlander:20 pitches 1 K, 1 H, SB. He will ends his rehab game before the 5th is he keeps this pace

a lot of fouls

I have often thought the same as Dan regarding Miggy. Comerica is too darn big, it’s surprising he wants to play here. Right now everyone is hoping the return of JV and VMart will fix this team. Imagine how disappointed we will all be if their return doesn’t change anything. Then what?

Then they keep playing but don’t win the division. Can’t win it every year. Things happen.

Whoa! JV had a horrible outing from what I could glean from the box score.

21 foul balls in two innings? Anyway the main thing is health. If good to go, it would seem another rehab start is in order.

Said the master of the obvious.
