Saturday’s lineups: Tigers vs. Astros

Twenty-five years after the Tigers traded Matt Nokes to the Yankees for Lance McCullers, they’ll face McCullers’ son today. The younger McCullers is making his second Major League start. He’ll face a lineup that includes Tyler Collins as the DH, moving Rajai Davis back to the bench for a day.

J.D. Martinez, meanwhile, assumes his daily place in the cleanup spot. As he said last night, the spot in the lineup makes no difference to him, even though he has heated up since moving up.

Reminder: Though today is a 4:08 p.m. ET start, it’s still a Fox Sports Detroit game, not Fox Sports 1.

eat’em up tigers!

Baseball is a funny game. Lobstein, who has the stuff of a decent HS pitcher, has comparable stats (4.29 ERA, 1.40WHIP) than Porcello, who is a projected ace for the Red Sox (5.07 ERA, 1.36 WHIP). Hopefully, Lobstein will give the Tigers a better chance to win today than Porcello did yesterday against the Angels.

comparable and sometimes better stats

The Lobber is going to have to be sharp and smart. There is a tonne of RHB power waiting to take him deep.
Today is the day Ian!!

If our batters are swinging into the dirt, trying to hit the ball, then they must know it is a ball and not a strike right? 1 in 100 times you might hit the ball off your shoe lace level. It’s like watching Kirk Gibson all over again swinging at low and away pitches, hoping to strike pay-dirt.

I doubt they’re going to sweep Houston so I’m guessing the ‘Stros bang a few hangers into the seats while the Detroit hitters try to figure their pitcher out.
Or not.

People better start showing these Astros some respect. They aren’t the same team from the last three or four years. If their bats finally wake up they could go very far into the post season.

I like Houston’s offense a lot. My main question is whether its starting pitching can hold up.

Yeah. Kuechel and McHugh are decent. Hernadez and Feldman are question marks. And McCullers is unproven.

Kuechel is a front runner for Cy Young

Buerhle, Haren and Fister, the pitchers with a fastball slower than Lobstein

Don’t forget the slowball leader…Weaver.

ROOT showed the table with them in that order for 2015

McCuller pitching this game for his spot on the roster

MLBN did a similar report a few days ago and had Weaver at number 1.

Caselas had Buehrle at number 1 and Weaver right behind him.

McCullers has real nice stuff. If he can command it, he will be a big problem.

So, the fastest team in a while on pace to break the DP record…

Regarding velocity, did you hear Reynolds of MLBN report on that HS kid from NY(?) who throws 97? Amazing.

I watching the game on Fox Sport LA not MLB

Iglesias could be hurt

Now that Miggy is apparently a speed guy, do he and Gose attempt another double steal?

Lobstein makes me nervous and when I get nervous I jabber too much. I’ll try to shut up for awhile.

Curse of the AAA call up

He is going back to AAA after his lack of concentration

So leading the league in grounding into double plays isn’t enough lets at triple play to the resume.

The ultimate rally killer. A killer inning killed.
Too bad Ian wasn’t thinking of slapping to RF

This must be the first since JL ordered the hit and run with two on and Guillen batting

No,first since 2009 vs Texas

Libber has filled in nicely but he has shown he lacks “finish”. Be it with two strikes or two outs. Not enough octane or gas in the tank.
Looks like the TP was a real momentum shifter.
Pretty good bet that Rondon coming back will mean something big to AlAl

Seriously why bring AA in he cant get me out.

These guys lack “fight” and the desire to finish off the opponent. Miggy is struggling and now Kinsler seems to be in a funk. Look at the Royals and they seem to have energy and the desire to win every day.

Gameday:”now an 11-game hitting streak for Miguel Cabrera, who’s 17-for-39 with four homers and 10 RBIs in that span”
He is not the problem, JD instill less fear than Victor. At least Victor RH was a threat

If not for a 5 rbi game in Minneapolis Miguel hasn’t driven in much lately 1 rbi in his last 5. It just doesnt feel like Miguel has come up that big in a while. Seems like a lot of meaningless 2 out singles to keep average up. And I am sure it has a lot to do with Vmart.

Rajai almost did it ….Kinsler nothing. …Miguel Nothing again.

Had Gose being ,as he should in third base, Miguel would have taken him home
But he was admiring his “HR”

I’m still pissed at Gose for stylin’ his HR trot. He actually thought he’d hit a no-doubter? To centerfield? In COMERICA PARK? The old school manager would say “You look tired, son. You need some help? We can get you some help.” And the player would ride the pines for a few days.
That and the unfortunate triple play was the game in a nutshell.
Three games in and I still can’t see how Houston has won so many games. Good bullpen and…………..what?

Lober was fine not great…Albaquerque was good in his other inning but the out he needed to strand he didnt. Middle of the lineup was poor. Triple play was a killer…..boys just gave up after that. Very winnable game they gave away.
As much as I love Sanchez I don’t expect much from him anymore.
And Rich I agree I don’t understand how this team (Astros ) win so many games. I guess when they get hits they make them count unlike the artificial high batting averages like the Tigers have.

I’m a tad confused by some of the recent comments about Miggy not coming thru with runners in scoring position, because that hasn’t been my take on the situation. So, I researched the issue. It seems coming into today, Miggy is hitting .333 with 2 doubles, 3HRs and 18 RBIs.

If you want to see it in baseball, just watch the Tigers; I have seen virtually all of our games since MLB was offered; had never seen a triple play during a live game until today; Springer hasn’t grounded into a DP this year, until he grounds into a near impossible one today. Watch the Tigers. You’ll see it happen. Already mentioned; the TP put a well oiled machine in the scrap pile for the rest of the day. Lobster has no margin for error; I would never start these guys, first pitch, 85 MPH fast ball over the meat of the plate; he has to have pin point control and command to succeed at the big level, and sadly he doesn’t. Poor ole’ Anthony was awed by his own power, so much so, that he forgot to get to third; game changer again. Again, in the tight games, 3-4-5 don’t step up like they should.
1. The Pen strikes out seven with no free rides.
2. Al looked the best today than he has all year;did give up the inherited run.
3. Igloo adds two more hits.
I’m not sure we’ll get much more than we have from Collins; Go bold with Fields. At age 66, I think I could as well as Perez at the plate; hyperbole of course, but he has not made any offensive contribution yet. And we are nearing game 50. Roster Spots are valuable, regardless of the minor league options behind them.

Makes no sense that Perez is still with the club . Is this the best bench player DD can scrape up ??

Who’s the DH guy down at Erie, Greene? I’ve seen he’s hitting for average not power but, heard he’s not on the 40 man. Who’s vulnerable/available so we can take a look at him? Collins is NOT the answer! That TP was BS,. killed the momentum!

Seemed as tho after the triple play the Tigers gave up. Maybe tomorrow is a better day . Gotta hope so.

Because he has 11 less rbi this year than last and 22 less than 2013 At this
Is it unfair maybe but he just hasn’t seem to come through late and close he has 3 rbi’s this year. Does that seem Miguel like?

My own evaluation metric (the PVO) supports the heresy that has been spoken about our beloved Miggy.
The game – changing, dramatic, and fearsome hitter has not been nearly as dangerous as he used to be.
His hits seem early in the game. Especially home games, then we see very forgettable at bats. I don’t blame the absence of Victor. I don’t even blame Miggy. But I trust my vision and observation.
Miggy is still Superman in my book but openers somehow have snuck kryptonite into the ballpark.

Oops! I mean “opponents” not “openers”.

This my personal opinion…everyone has one….Miggy reminds me of “Mighty Casey At The Bat” He’s been terrible..his hits are almost 1st at bats and then his bat goes to sleep…as if to say, “I’ve got my hit for today” most of his hits are on the ground
lately and early in the game…do you think Wally can give him a little advice?
The amazing thing is he’s still hitting .300 + Is there a team leader on this team?
Is anyone listening?

Interestingly enough, Miggy and Avila are the top 2 producers with runners in scoring position for any Tiger with more than 1 AB.

Miggy is hitting.333 with 13 walks when runners are in scoring position. His line is otherwise .475 OBP,.578 SLG and 1.052 OPS. That’s not shabby.

And for those who still need to spew a bit more anger, here’s a little info about one of our favorite targets, Avila. With runners in scoring position, he has a BA of .462 with a line of .500 OBP, .692 SLG and 1.192 OPS.

Regardless of stats….Miggy hasn’t produced in crucial situations….his numbers are good…but not when it really counted…I’ve watched just about every game and
I would give him the first ab after that the pitchers either pitch around him or he hits
ground outs and or dp’s…..I don’t know what the answer is…maybe Wally knows.
Leadership is short coming….that team needs some of what KC has.
