Friday’s lineups: Tigers vs. Astros

Collin McHugh is off to a good start for Houston this year, but he also has some reverse splits going – a .292 average and four home runs from right-handed hitters, compared with .232 and one homer from lefties in about the same number of at-bats. That partly explains Rajai Davis’ start as the designated hitter, his first start at DH since Sept. 12, 2013 as a Blue Jay against the Yankees.

“It wasn’t a huge deciding factor,” said Brad Ausmus, who noted McHugh’s career splits are fairly even. “It’s just Rajai needs to play at times.”

So the strategy is to hold the Houston hitters to solo homers only?

McHugh is a very good pitcher. Lots of speed guys in our lineup. This could prove entertaining.

The Houston-Tigers trade I remenber is Cedeño-Ausmus. Still today I cant get over it.

Not sure how Simon does what he does but I hope he can keep the Astros to the middle of the outfield

Jeez Ian big mistake. Big.

Man an error like that really, really hurts!! They are really teeing off on Simon. Looks like we might be in for a long and frustrating night.

JD

Love miggy but he’s not coming through with the big hits. Seems like there’s a lot of that wiffing with runners on.
.
Jd saved his butt.

T Y J D. I thought i was going to have to complain about LOB again. Table set but Ian and Miggy can’t use it. It was beginning to look like they couldn’t hit another CY Young pitcher, Joe McWho?

McHugh is very good. Something like a 2.73 ERA with more Ks than innings pitched. He also had an outstanding WHIP of 1.02.last year

Yes El Tigre I know both runs were unearned but doesn’t shade the fact that the Stros not being fooled up there at the plate. They’ve been hitting Simon very hard the first three innings. That HR by JD huge after Miggy K’d. Someone needs to step up when Miggy fails and pick up the team. That HR by JD huge!!!! Now let’s hope Simon get’s new life and starts setting the Stro’s down!!

Cheese puffs. Are they trying to set a record for GIDP?

And how about Gose with that drag bunt. That’s a seldom practiced art these days. That was poetry in motion. Really glad he’s a Tiger!!

Gameday here so I don’t have live action. Does Simon really look hittable as you say? Okay. How many of you think 3 runs is enough? Raise your hands. Funny, I don’t see any hands raised.

They are on pace for 173 GIDP, one shy of the Red Sox 174 ( 1990) 4 ahead of St Louis , the WSC of 2011

Well, 2 of our speed guys, Gose and Miggy, almost pulled that off with our 4-hole guy who earlier homered, at the plate. Entertaining?

Now what was that all about? Gose caught too far off 3rd base?

Naw. Double steal.

That eephus was a clear strike according to Gameday.

Simon really did his job, especially when you consider 2 unearned runs.

I think Simon looks pretty good. 93 on the fastball and 83 on the splitter. The splitter is usually diving pretty good and Simon is throwing lots of strikes. No earned runs and only one walk thru 7. the ERA is now down to 2.67. Still, it’s time for our setup guy. Who might that be tonight?

You must be kidding.. Gorzo 7th and Joba 8th?

Oh no not Joba

He has to put Joba in . Hope he has his best stuff and no screw ups.

BA, why do you keep doing this? Jabba should only pitch when the Tigers are 5 runs ahead or behind.

Not the best idea to put Soria there for a third consecutive game

Soria? It wasn’t the 9th inning.
.
WOW! Insurance runs. Very nice. Does anyone think McCann is a keeper?
.
No Soria. Not a save situation……………yet.

Joba is a Jobber

Soria won’t be getting sore.

Nice to save Soria from another inning.
Casty way to hyped up in his at bat. Struck out on a pitch he saw 3 times.

Hard to believe complaints about Miggy. They give him almost nothing to hit often, and he bats .342…

Loved it!

Soria was warming up before the add on runs

HUGE 8th inning from Rajai there. That’s why I like him in there.
How about JD. Just misses a homer to left and then belts one out to right on the next pitch. You don’t see that very often.
Joba throwing more fastballs looks much better.
Simon strong. McCann. Good game.

McCann can. He is a pretty impressive balplayer. Did a good job with Simon today who must be hateful for a catcher to catch. His pitches go everywhere. Plus he shakes off 2 or 3 pitches almost every pitch.
Be interesting to see him compared to other AL rookies.

1. The David 8th. inning AB; he’s a good catalyst for this team.
2. Keeping Altuve off the bases.
3. The Miggy scoop from Igloo. His defense is far underrated.
Kudos to Julio, JMac, and the Big Pasta. Held this juggernaut in check tonight.
JovaGorz did its job well. Nice win for the Guys.

nice game last night

RE: ST and 30 YO:
“Carpenter, … appeared in 27 straight games to start the season before taking a four-day break this month for “extreme fatigue.” … The diagnosis was mystifying to those who wondered how a player could be gassed this early in the calendar. But as Cardinals manager Mike Matheny pointed out, Carpenter’s bouts of dizziness, dehydration and an accelerated heart rate came after a rigorous stretch of 20 games in 20 days.”

The commissioner is pushing for a 154 games calendar .My take: the man hates baseball . He wants it vanished: shorter games, shorter season, more unbalanced schedule

Longer playoffs?

Supposedly, longer rest during the season

Max effort: 8 IP 1 run. Singled in the 6th and scored the winning run from 1st on a double.
His ERA? 1.67 WHIP 0.88

For once , he is on the wrong side of RS , 4.11:
1.67 5-3
Porcello: 5.07: 4-3

Ian Krol is unscored upon in 10.1 IP allowing only 3 hits and 11 Ks

“Joba’s the eighth-inning guy.”…
