Thursday’s lineups: Tigers vs. Astros

A lot of people have asked why the Tigers are starting this series with a day game. It’s Space Day at Comerica Park, bringing school field trips out. Also, the Thursday day game has apparently become a regularity here. The only Thursday night game at Comerica Park this season happens Aug. 20, when the Texas Rangers arrive for a four-game series.

It’s a quick turnaround for the Astros, who flew up from Houston immediately after their win yesterday afternoon. It’s also quick for the Tigers, who do day games after night games plenty of times but also had to do their start-of-series meetings this morning.

“We just get up earlier,” Brad Ausmus said. “It’s like cramming for exams when you have two finals in one day.”

Jose Iglesias gets the day off after the night game. With Scott Feldman’s reverse splits so far this season, Rajai Davis also gets a start, landing Tyler Collins on the bench for the day and getting J.D. Martinez a game at designated hitter.

LOL. I’m not even sure I understand WHIP and OPS. I do know that IRS stands for Internal Run Scoring.

Aaahh! The intrinsic beauty of a well located fastball.
Seems to be a bit of a dying art. So many sinker, slider pitchers these days. So many Tommy Johns too.

WHIP and OPS have become fairly standard stats. Walks+hits per inning; anything below 1.00 is excellent. On base percentage + slugging pct gives an idea of how valuable a hitter is. IRS is inherited runs scored. I like to look at that to evaluate situational, non- setup non-closer relievers.

For defense, definitely the PVO approach for me.

Gee. 2 GIDP already.

Do the Astros play in a shoebox stadium with all those homers? Will CoPa present a challenge to them then?

I hope so Illini…it is just a matter of time until they provide a bomb or two so our hitters better start putting some offense together.

Wow! Gattis 8 HR, 24 RBI with a .193 BA and Carter 7 HR, 20 RBI with a .164 BA. Those guys must only hit in clutch situations with runners on.

Beside Raw power there is a photo of Gattis, Oso Blanco, the White Bear.

Springer too

I knew JD was hot, but I didn’t realize he has an 11-game hitting streak going.

The Price is Right. Just don’t let those Astros open any doors. Two games in a row with big hits for Casty. Could it be the beginning? Oh oh another double play. Did Miggy think that was going to drop in?

Somebody let them open a door. An Angel slammed it shut. Dangerous 8th inning for bullpen.

Well a seemingly wide gap has turned into a close affair. With the way Price was pitching practically a blow out then a blow up. Let’s hold on boys.

I don’t like the idea of putting in Hardy with the big RHB coming up

Why not simply leave Angel?

Jobs has become the ValverNathan of the last 4 years. Keep your fingers crossed.

Why did he clip the Angel’s wings? Now we have to hold our breath with Jabba?

What did I tell you

Joba needs another employer

Come on do you really think a pitch down and off the plate was a bad pitch …dude got lucky. Unfortunately.

Turning very blue here holding my breath.

How did Carter NOT deposit the 0-1 hanger in the LF seats?
We got very lucky

Taking Nesbitt out regardless of the lefty batter was a poor decision IIMO. He had thrown 2 for outs.

Runner on 3rd absolutely nobody out and a big flipping goose egg. Hopefully Sorias can remain perfect.

Bad baseball why not squeeze?
This one doesn’t “feel” good at all

Asking a lot of any closer. Failing to score in that scenario is usually the kiss of death.

That extra run would have been very nice. Soria has been very good but no one is perfect 100% of the time.

This game is going to be a heartbreak after leading 5-0! Got to get rid of Chamberlain, he’s past his prime days. Who do you replace Joba with though?

Rondon, coming soon

Nope…..Sorias blew it today.

Darn! Right out of the mouth of an old Illinois fool. Tied 5-5.

You can put it on the board.

Just as I predicted. How sickening!

Now we need a walk-off. Kinsler’s first HR???

I hope your right. All of the good pitching left is Houston’s

That’s one way to knock a pitcher out of the game.

Miguel and Kinsler don’t come up with a big hit. Miggy has done a lot of that.

Now they’re in real trouble.Astros’ best hitter up first.

Having watched this team all year long, I give us a 25 percent chance of winning.

Brad mis-managed himself again.
This one would be a miracle now to win. Team is devoid of energy and confidence and Miggy has announced to the rest that he couldn’t do it. When Miggy can’t do it it seems like it is very contagious.
Sure hope I’m wrong.
All these great stats our bullpen has belies the fact that it is still not a very good one at all.

I’m really starting to like Wilson. The guy is quietly doing a very decent job for the Tigers.

TG for Alex Wilson. A good inning.

0-5 for JD today.

Yep. It looks like his hitting streak may well end today.

Wilson has been the pleasant surprise. As good as he is, he would be the setup, and move Angel to long relief. Get rid of the Hut!

They seem far to patient with Joba. Somehow expecting he is going to rediscover himself. His problem is the slider of his which is over-used and over-hung way too many times.

Alex Wilson resembles Chris Pratt of Parks & Rec and Guardians of the Galaxy. How about the latter for a nickname?

Our clutch catcher!

And he was benched…

There it is! The walk-off! Right idea. Wrong player. Anybody care??? J Mac might just be putting AA on his A for a long time.

McCann CAN!!!!! Great win.

Johnny Kane asks if there’s a better feeling than hitting a walk off homer in front of the home fans. My answer would have been “Yes, it’s kind of hard to do on the road”

I love this game of baseball!

That’s fantastic. Couldn’t happened to a better kid. Rasmus made it interesting.
Wilson deserved the win and got it.

Very few can be DH. It not easy for most to keep themselves into the game

You’re right. If you take one of your better hitters and make him a DH, you’ve probably lost one of your better hitters.

I rarely post during a game, but I was so amazed at how a 5-0 lead disappeared into the 7th. inning. Houston did what we can’t do, they come back late; unless we pile it on early, I’m not very confident. In the end, it was a great moment for our future permanent starting catcher, and I loved the Arkansan accent. A genuine good guy.
Wilson was a great second player in the Sox trade. I trust his work. No wrap on Soria; it was time for a blown save, and we let him down in the 8th. with no insurance run.
I still don’t think you need Perez batting in a critical moment; give Nick a nod of confidence, and let him finish a game. He’s contributing more offensively at least for now. Would DH Rajai over Julio, when not using Collins;agreed that every day guys need to be every day guys; and I still don’t trust Rags defense. The Astros are not going to go away, especially with their Pen; our guys need to remember the low averages, but the high homer rates when throwing a first pitch. Miggy is still the best, but doesn’t deliver the drama during real drama times; Igloo stepped up last week, and now JMac. Still looking for a team identity.
1. DP K’s 12 “Stros”.
2. The Gose catch.
3. Cespedes plate performance.
I’ll say this. It was not a boring game.

I stepped out when the Astros tied the game….Ausmus waving his magic hands , changing pitchers…I said wow! really? His manuvering almost cost him the game.
I was just about to give up on MacCann…He looked awful at the plate, up till
“theGameWinner”God Bless the Irish! The team really has to struggle for a win.
Thank you James!

Nice to get the win and a walk off at that . Go Tigers !!!!!
