Saturday’s lineup: Tigers at Indians

After eight hits over four games, Jose Iglesias gets a day off. Andrew Romine gets his first start at short. Yes, Brad Ausmus is sitting a hot bat, and Iglesias had a day off with the team Tuesday, but Ausmus has made a point to make sure Iglesias’ legs stay strong through the course of the season.

“He didn’t complain of anything,” Ausmus said. “It was just I felt like we should give him a day. And part of it is that you have to get these other guys in there.”

The day off plan will continue as the season rolls along, though there isn’t any sort of set schedule to it according to Ausmus.

“We’ll have to play it by ear,” he said.

P: Corey Kluber

Can’t hit much, but he has a strong arm and his head is in the game. Have to give the bench players some playing time.

Kluber is supposedly their best pitcher. Price surely qualifies as the Tigers’ best. How well have the Indians hit LHP in the past?
Can’t shake KC yet. Someone has to blink sooner or later.

Vs LH:
252 .312 .360 .672
254 .320 .402 .722

It appears that Brad and staff should get a lot of credit for bringing the team north ready to play for the second consecutive season. Two 4-0 starts, and we remember how 2008 began.

Gose is having a heck of a game so far. Jackson would probably have let that ball drop in.

Watch out today. Price not fooling anybody yet, including the ump.
3 decent plays in the 1st inning kept him out of trouble.

This ump apparently isn’t interested in calling an equal strike zone for each pitcher

Wow–David sure showed me up!

Kluber on. Gonna need some runs today.

Wow. Gose can really cover. Throws pretty well for a CF guy, too.

I’m a nervous wreck.

Price keeps throwing that pitch its not enticing and its not working. Try something else for gods sake

Jeez David…ugh

Not being able to throw a ball to second. 2 walks. ..awesome

Yuk! And it’s Raburn with the RBI. Like him, but hate ex-Tigers to hurt us.

It looked like a struggle all day for him and the hitters stopped after the 1st inning.

One hit in the inning.

Now it’s up to the BP. And Lobstein goes tomorrow. This series could get ugly. Cross your fingers.

Oh my, David ain’t gonna win not Gold Glove that’s for sure.
Wonder what Alex said to him with Sands up?
Seemed like Price got fastball up and away on his mind and didn’t want to throw much else.
Let’s see what our hitters can do now. When it is clutch time.

If the Tigers can win today, there wouldn’t be so much pressure on Lobstein tomorrow.

Withe only 8 outs left in this game Ausmus should be hitting for Avila. Can’t afford to to simply just give an out away.

I walked outside. Wha happened to Gose?

Davis PH vs the LH reliever

Who is this Sands guy? He’s having a really nice game.

What we don’t want is extra innings.

Miggy strokes an RBI single! Time to say prayers to the patron saint of BPs.

Victor hurt himself the other day and now again. He’s not right.

He heard me. Better put a pinch runner in.

Martinez needs a runner. Looks like he tweaked that bad leg on his cut before his hit.

I bet we’ll see Victor in a G II brace before too long.
We did get that clutch hitting though. That was cool.
Now we need to rely on the dreaded bullpen.
Nice job Romine, Miggy and Marty.

Either that or he’s reinjured again. You know it would just about kill him if he’s hurt again.

Didn’t mean to leave out Kinsler. That was a B-I-G hit.

I think his knee will always be ‘injured”. Certainly compromised.
Impressive to be able to concentrate enough to get that clutch hit after the tweak.

First time this season Tigers were behind in a game 3-2. Didn’t last long after 3 more runs. Price did it to himself with that error but no earned runs? So ERA still 0.00 but he can’t go 2-0. Hang on BP!

Tigers don’t feel Martinez’ pinch is serious. Said he was feeling better already

Damn walks…..

Why do people whine about Price? The BP provides all the drama anyone can stomach.

…..and there it goes. The blowpen again. Extra innings anyone?

Again, my question is, who is this Sands character?

And the patron saint of BPs is not listening to us. UGLY time needs to be thwarted.

They have a closer, now they need a setup guy.

Games like this serve to remind that the season will be a struggle and not a cake-walk.
Horrible pitching to Sands twice..
Bullpen is a constant source of frustration.

Walks walks walks walks error…..nice day

So far, a perfect day for Romine!

Davis is fat. It affects his skill set.

Romine scores. Good jump. Good day.

Bad running by Davis. He had to be middle way

Sands is human!

I have never seen such shitty base-running. Rajai botched Miggy’s hit against the wall for sure but he should have had 3rd when Romine scored.
Then nothing on the fly-out/
His head is not in the game with Gomes taking over is all I can guess.

He looked safe to me.

With VMart out, they need a bat like Collins

A strong ST allowed Sand to take the spot vacated by Swisher

Bad thing for Gomes. Hope he’s okay.

Blown open!

UGH! The BP still needs to stand up.

Krol winning the game

Huge momentum swing!

The middle of the lineup is really doing their job. Kinsler is part of the “middle”

Soria seems as good as the Tigers have. But he’s not what he once was to paraphrase a country song.

McCann ignited the first comeback. Good. Surprised that Ausmis is not afraid of ending without a C

Ausmus, sorry

That was exhausting

Kluber was throwing 1st pitch strikes over the heart of the plate and Gose took advantage.

You wonder why baseball is losing fans, and this 9 inning game is a perfect example.
Four and one half hours of torture, nail biting, and teeth gnashing. Again, all of those we can handle because we win again. But if something is not done to move AL games along quicker, the young generation won’t bite. Price had a great fastball, but never got into his auto mode performance. He just couldn’t place critical pitches in critical moments. Still, his average is better than most of the guy’s good. agree with the comments re Rags Davis; have never been a big fan, even with a year that helped us last season. I still think he’s more into Rags, and less into Tigers; reality tells him that a few more good performances by Gose, and he becomes expendable. Hope that’s not the case. Just seems that way. Great day for Ian and Miggy. Liked Tom G.’s BP performance too. Our guys also scored every time Cleveland scored. Big time playing.
1. Romine’s three walks today made the win possible. Big AB’s for Mr. Weak Stick.
2. Gose’s energy level, especially in commanding CF. Finally brings closure to the Jackson departure.
3. McCann’s big AB on entering for Alex. Lots of energy from him too, and it bled over to the other guys.
Finally, Cespedes became Mr. Frosty with his icing on the cake double. Hits in all five game. On to game three; love sweeps, but this one might be a stretch. Undefeated Evan! Yeah, Baby!

undefeated and playing good baseball. hard to beat that!

enjoyed the game today! we’re sure running better this year!

remind me again why we needed to sign Vmart – we have plenty of bats (Miggy, Yoenis, JD).

Take him out of the equation and Miguel would be walked a lot like he was with Boesch after him. J D still doesnt have a name. And Cespedes OBP is low

Brad did drive me crazy a little bit with the BP. Looked like he had on one of those new Apple watches in the interview. Won’t say a bad word about Rajai because I really like him. Gose is a great CFer, just like Rajai said.

Alot went right then wrong for the Tigers today. The good thing is they get the win. But I was on the edge of the cliff almost all afternoon.

yeah that’s a good point Kathy….while Krol was out there I was dying for a bullpen change. re: rajai….for whatever reason the majority of fans never warmed up to him….he’s gone more than above my expectations. He, like Cespedes, will not be here next year. Which is why he will get plenty of playing time this year.

Have to disagree, Evan. Fans do like him. Last year was his best and the best contracts he’s had and he likes playing for the Tigers. This team has a chance to win the World Series. So, if he wants that ring, he better not gain weight and be ready when called upon. He has to be ready because it’s a very long season.

I haven’t seen this mentioned anywhere, but I thought the length of game was a direct result of Dale Scott’s refusal to call strikes. I can’t recall seeing a K zone that tight……….plus it moved around.
Managers continue playing matchup with their bullpens. My theory is that the more pitchers you use, the more likely you’ll find the guy who sucks that day. Today it was Krol. Could have just left Alburquerque in there. Granted there will be a need for relievers tomorrow so that has to be considered.
Romine is an extremely intelligent baseball player and I never complain about him being in the lineup (I heard there were complaints). He kept drawing walks because he knew Scott wasn’t calling strikes. I thought Andrew was the player of the game by the time it was over.

Agree on all points Rich. Was thinking the same re: Romine while watching today. This is why he deserves to be on the roster. He’s an intelligent baseball player. He may be a light hitter but does everything else needed to win. Tigers do not win today without him. Player of the game. Also great comments Greg. And Dan, you finally got your wish regarding a solid everyday LFer. I really appreciate what Cespedes brings. Hated to see Porcello go, but this trade for an “everyday” impact player was a win. Right now things are going so well, we could go on and on with the positive comments. BP still a big question, but the steadiness and dependability of Sorio makes it better than last year already. He also strikes me as being an intelligent player. A quiet presence.
