ALDS Game 1 lineups: Tigers at O’s

Rajai Davis is not only on the roster, he’s in the lineup, playing center field and batting ninth.

“We came in at 8:30 this morning and he got his treatment and then went and did a bunch of agility drills, sprints and he said he was good to go,” Ausmus said. “I asked him point blank, first of all, ‘Can you play nine innings?’ He said yes. I said, ‘Do you feel like you can steal a base?’ He said yes. And he didn’t hesitate.”

That said, Ausmus admitted he might hold his breath a little bit with Davis’ status.

With Davis in, it’s a pretty standard lineup. Andrew Romine gets the start at short again. Whether he gets the start in Game 2 against lefty Wei-Yin Chen is yet to be answered.

Tigers in 4. MVP JD Martinez.

Orange towels everywhere. Must be a few Tiger fans at Camden Yards. Go Tigers!!

low and away and high fast ball so far.

Ugh to that 1st inning for Tiger’s hitters

Ugh Max looking crappy so far…excellent big shot

Romine saved 2 runs

He saw through the baserunner.

They need to pitch around Cruz or the dude is going to beat us all by himself. You don’t want a repeat of 2011. Let’s be smart.

Sitting here it’s pretty easy. They get the huge DP and I say to my wife they will walk Cruz. No advantage to pitch to him with 1st base open.
So what do they do?
1st inning and Brad has already made a game changing mistake.
Downright stupid.

Max Scherzer not worth it! Dudes had one good year and the rest of it is mediocre at best. Too inconsistent. Lots of time left but not the pitching you’d hoped you see for sure.

Hard to believe. No brainer and Brad showed no brains.
Max is over-amped and we are subservient so far. Let’s hope things change quickly.

Thank you, Victor. But that pitch before the HR was off the plate and called a strike.

True, just below the frontier, but down

Max gets a mulligan Now prove it hot shot
Not a fan of the strike zone. Max didn’t get some of the borderline pitches Tillman getting. If they were both getting them I’d be fine.

Pinball park is to blame
As soon as the Tigers chase bad pitches, the pitcher will get a wider strike zone

No excuse for inconsistent strike zone. Just shows incompetence or a bias. Nothing more nothing less.

What a banbox. Every fly ball and the fans think it is gone. It is like US Cellular in Chicago.
— Bob

Very tough strike zone.
Why are our guys striking out like this against 4 seam fastballs?
Max looks bad—hate ot say it—but he looks bad.

Avila llooks surprised when he catches the ball. Not usre why but the two of them do not looks to be in sync.

Max needs t step up. He telegraphed the change up to Markakis.

Max got his mulligan and jerk gives it back. Jerk

I’m worried about this one. Doesn’t feel good at all

Nope Mr Cy Scherzernot so Cy!

Oh my spell corrector

Great AB by Kinsler and a stupid AB by Hunter to follow it up.
Big inning for Max. He has to show he can dominate this inning or he won’t be able to rest of the game.

I still can’t believe the decision to pitch to Cruz.
EVERY THING pointed to walking him, intentionally or unintentionally.
I don’t get it.
And I do not have an Ivy league education.

Miggy needs to have a good at bat here. He actually could take a lesson from Victor in terms of focus and cutting down your swing.

Miggy needs to lead his team and a lifetime .275 BA and a 25% K rate won’t do it.
He is better than that and needs to change those numbers dramatically

It would help if we didn’t lead off so many innings. Hunter should have been trying to hit the ball to right.
— Bob

I meant he not we …. as in Miggy.
— Bob

I know we have a couple of hits here but why on earth are we swinging at the first pitch?

Blame it on the bats and blame it on Ausmus.
Max will take the heat but Ausmus should have walked Cruz—there was absolutely not a BETTER time to do just that.
Our hitters have had a tonne of pitches at eye level and have not been able to square up much after the 2nd.
Hitting has been an albatross all year, despite the stats that say otherwise.

Max is the one who thew the pitches…..he has blame too. He wants to be the man and the man does what Bumgardner did last night. Not throw up cookies. Hitters only succeed if they are good 30% of the time.

You two are amazing. I’m pretty sure I’m watching the game live and you two are sitting here talking like it’s over. Classic armchair managing. I’ve been a baseball fan and played the game for many years and I can’t ever recall a time when a manager walked a guy intentionally in the first inning with 2 outs and a runner on first. Walking him would have been ridiculous. You trust your ace starter to get him out. In this case he didn’t. You don’t get every guy all the time.

Well that may very well have been the opportunity and unfortunately Torii couldn’t get it done. Baltimores pen is from all accounts pretty unhittable.

yea nick! great defense! making two outs in the 5th.
i wouldn’t be surprised if he’s tiring of those “late-game defensive replacement moves”🙂
that ‘s what exciting about watching our rookies develop–seeing them reach the next level.

RF ?? not sure what that means eltigre.

i’m referring to the popup nick caught in the 5th and then his bare handed toss to miggy (right after) to get 2nd and final outs.

or ….. are u referring to GK’s comment & torii being a RF’er?

chuckle, clear example of the problems pronouns can produce.

JD has a great arm. He used to play a very good RF for Houston. Still not comfortable at LF

He was done in the 6th

Max hes thrown 83 pitches. Hes just not good.

Cy Scherzer…..kudos to you! Pitch right down the middle. Overrated.

Jerk umpire.

Umpire is a clueless piece of crap

You gotta be kidding me. Jeez.

And, that would have been a 2 run homer.

and a tie game.

Bad call to run Kinsler there. Now Miggy hits it out and could have tied it.

Well i understand why Oday is a severe ground pitcher. It just sucks.

Good thing bases were empty.

Weaver did not have a sign for hit and run. That is why.

Very frustrating game.

Jeff obviously you don’t know baseball and you don’t know Cruz and you don’t remember what he does to the Tigers.
Arcmchair again, announcers are talking about Kinsler stealing and I am wondering why? Two runs down now way–one run OK–try to make something happen and get into scoring position. Two runs down and you have Miggy coming up you don’t take yourself out of the inning.
Brad did and made his wnd stupid decision of the game.
You call it armchair, I call it 50 years of watching and playing baseball.
Max pitched well. He made some mistakes. Our manager made bigger ones.

You seriously think giving up 4 runs on 7 hits is pitching well? I’d say its a 4.91 era and not good.

Oh because anyone who disagrees with YOU must be stupid. Whatever

No because 5 runs isnt good pitching? Jeff its not rocket science. Its fact

“Miguel Cabrera now has 9 postseason home runs with the Tigers, which are the most in franchise history” Tigers PR

The mantra has to be “Don’t let Cruz beat you”. The guy in the on deck circle is NOT Victor Martinez it is Steve Pearce.

And don’t let JJ Hardy whos hit 9?

Wait 5 runs for Max.

Oh well,
Romine has been so solid and then this.
Never mind, Ausmus lost this game in the very 1st inning.

time for defensive replacements

Not Joba´s fault. Had Romine did what he is supposed to do.

As far as I’m concerned Soria should be put out to pasture…..his first pitch was down the middle ..
boom! or bang second pitch bang and so on…don’t use this guy again, please!
What a waste! Coke looked frustrated and gave up some more…KC looks great, great pitching, great defense….how were the Tigers able to beat up on them?
Kc won their game against a great hitting club tonight…Moose Moustakias
hit a homer…now that’s a team! Tigers do not deserve to be where they are…
sorry, they were really terrible tonight….where the hell is the relief?
play Collins tomorrow….Aliva calls a crappy game…put in Mccann or Holiday.

I don’t want Soria wasted tonight. Save him for tomorrow.

too late. It’s getting real ugly.

he was really wasted….hit after hit, didn’t get anyone out.

Great catch by Castellanos. …not

Could the bullpen be any worse? Same old crap from them.

Yep 5 runs for Scherzer 5 for the pen. This sucks.

My last comment for the night. Hopefully, sooner, rather than later, MLB demands an electronic strike zone, Can’t let umpires deciding winners and losers!

What is the chance that everybody in the bullpen could suck for most of the year? Even guys with proven track records like Nathan and Soria. Curse of the Detroit bullpen. Ausmus looks embarrassed.

Ausmus and the coaching staff should be embarrassed by this game . Not surprised at all maybe tomorrow is better.

Let’s wipe this game off the board, and come back strong with Verlander tomorrow.

THat is about all you can do . Clean slate tomorrow forget about this game . Maybe JV has some magic he can do.

Ya know what’s just as bad as the umpire crew? These announcers.

I just want this game to end. 12 runs……..really Tigers, really?

Since no bullpen pitcher can perform, It must be the pitching coach

Doesn’t matter whether its 2 runs or 7. Its kinda embarrassing though

oye. sure hope that they can shake this disaster off before noon tomorrow.

Ugh……..tone was set early just as it was in the 1st game of the series in San Francisco a few years ago

Too many ugly games this year and recently. Very bad sign.
JV in his element tomorrow. Realistically that means nothing, but we have to keep our hopes up for a blast of the past.
Our hitters didn’t hit, and our manager missed the boat.
The bullpen is a non-factor- or non-existent. Can’t rely on it all so our hitters have to hammer the ball and our starters have to mistake free. It’s a tall task and actually pretty much impossible, truth be told.

Didn’t think it was a very good idea at all to activate Rajai.
What do you think, Jeff?

I think 50 year of baseball watching has made you nothing but a pessimistic know it all… Hey…you asked.

Looking like a mistake. Don Kelly is on the roster right?

Not a Carrera fan. Too many bonehead plays by him

That Davis throw was not that smart either

Tonight was a must win considering you don’t know which JV will show up and Porcello has been shaky lately

If its any consolation, Tigers lost the 1st game in both ALDS against Yankees by fairly big scores (8-4 & 9-3) and won both series.

What is the Tigers’ record when VMart strikes out twice in a game?
Anybody else happy that Phil (the scorebook) Coke is a free agent?
How does putting a Tiger uniform on turn good relievers into lousy ones work?
That being said I would like to have seen Andrew Miller in the “D” again.
Even though there is a LHP going tomorrow it would be ludicrous to play Rajai again. Huge roster decision that went south quickly.
Donny Kelly to the rescue? Ezequiel Carerra? Major dilemma.
JV pretty much has to throw a shutout tomorrow morning.
Kinsler strikes out and walks off the field on a ball in the dirt and away from the catcher—funny thing is I don’t blame him.
3 Relievers gave up 7 runs in 2/3 IP. Yikes.
Waiting for three things to be pleased about.

I guess your questions were rhetoric but:
Me. His “good numbers” as I said were in low leverage situations.
The pitching coach or the manager
6 runs, one was unearned. The defense failed badly: Romine and Davis

Tigers in 5 . JV pitching the last game

Yikes! That was a big egg. A double yoker. Whew. Glad to get that one out of the way. They’ve got us right where we want ’em. Uh wait, strike that. We’ve got ’em right where they want us. Not right either. We’ve got ’em right where we want ’em. Yeah that’s the ticket.
75-5 with the lead after 7. Guess you have to beat them early. Need to hit tomorrow and JV has to be efficient. He’s been better than Max lately anyway. Correct? Were those two TBS announcers former Oriole players? Sure sounded like it. You’d think this series was over.

Can they replace Davis with Collins? Davis could still be eligible for the WS should that come about. I’d rather see Collin’s bat in the lineup over Carrera. Can he play decent CF? He’s proven he can hit and has power.

Gritty call ET. I’ll go along with that.

Marty- yes they can and why not?

It’s a team fail…..Max set the tone you can’t be the ace (supposed) and give up 5. You should be able to trust that he’s not going to give up 5 runs. Romines error hurt for sure but that’s not him. Pen was the pen. I blame everyone.

Will Ausmus play Avila AND Kelly at the bottom of the lineup tomorrow?

1. Three HR’s usually win a ball game; alas that they were all solo.
2. Julio’s nice play off the wall in left to can Pearce.
3. Several good AB’s drove Tillman’s count up early. Tori always bailed him out with his AB’s.
Kudos to Romine for the hits; ugh for the critical error. Still BP has to be able to get outs. Not a pretty picture tonight. And now you have to hope that JV forgets Upland for the next 24 hours, and rise to the occasion. We cannot recover from 0-2. Scherzer has not pitched lights out for an entire game in over a month. Davis cannot make much of a contribution, if he can’t move any better than what we saw tonight. Our team has to get on top first; we just don’t do it enough. The keys are Rookie 1 and Double A. If you are going to play them, they have to step up when runners are on. Also, Tori needs to use all of that experience, and make the two hole count. Too many times, he is the last out of an inning, making Miggy lead off empty the next inning. That’s t in a nutshell. 2, 6, and 7 have to hit. Finally, would have not had Max start the 8th. Had Joba come in clean, could have been an entirely different story. What began as a one run game in the 8th. became a major embarrassment for our guys. Verlander must do the job, or we can dream about what might have been for a winter.

I hope Andrew continues to play. I like him at short. That may be the last error we see from him. He was extremely disappointed in himself but not defeated. He came back with a decent AB in the 9th. Max was good after the 2nd but in these short series, you can’t take 3 innings to get it going. Seems like he’s been slow out of the gate lately. Not good enough. Pen was awful. Still, the back end of Baltimore’s pen threw quite a bit tonight. As bad as ours was, their pen was worked. Nathan and Sanchez still rested and healing. We nearly saw the Tigers turn the momentum but it wasn’t to be, as Hunter lined into the DP. 3 run homer would have made it 5-4, still no outs.

I made my first comment on this game a few days ago when I said I didn’t want Scherzer pitching game one. In the postseason, you have to be lock down lights out stingy. No room for giving up a few runs while going deep into the game.
My second comment came early in this game when I realized they were going to challenge Cruz. Don’t do that.
Take a cue from recent postseason history, Brad. Cruz kills us and Verlander is your guy. If JV can’t get it done, it won’t be done.
I still think we take this round.

I like your optimism Rich and hope your right I’m just having a hard time seeing it.

Agree, Rich. Ver has been vintage in his past several starts. Max, not so much. I’d also prefer to see DKB in center over Carerra. Felt bad for Romine, but that’s a play he has to make. JV usually rises to the occasion, Go Tigers!!!

So, the smartest runner in MLB went for 2B on his own.Kinlser untimely steal attempt could be the equivalent of the Fielder´s out at home. The irony

Didn’t like the result but it wasn’t a bad move. A sinker ball pitcher, stay out of DP. Just bad luck. The AB was spoiled by a horrible strike call on 2-0 by the ump and then Hunter swinging at 2-1 when Kinsler had the base stolen.

Also, hope we get an umpire behind home plate who can see.

It looks like Scott Barry will be the home plate ump for today’s game. JV is 4-0 with a .067 era in 4 career starts with Barry behind the plate.

So Ausmus basically throws Kinsler under the bus. I’m paraphrasing here but Robot Ausmus said, “he was running on his own, and didnt have a problem with it. he was trying to get into scoring position, just a bad break”. “they wouldn’t pitch to Miggy the same with runners on base, it would be a totally different at bat” HELLO ITS MIGGY! I’ll take my chances you moron. how about, you are down by two runs and Kinsler’s run means nothing so you demand the coaches to tell Kinsler NOT to try and steal and run themselves out of an inning? take some control and responsibility and manage Mr Ivy League Robot! AUS BOT 3000! Sure it might not have mattered with our horrible bullpen, but all momentum was lost there. Even Miggy’s homerun was anticlimactic and kind of a downer after you blow it on the base pads. You never know!

My thoughts from last night (take them for what they are worth) –
1. One loss, that is all.
2. Baltimore’s starters fall off now. If we grind at bats like we did last night we will be in good shape. Thought our hitters did a pretty good job.
3. Is Soria tipping his pitches? Seemed like it to me.
4. Davis needs to sit. Rajai without his legs is worthless, both offensively and defensively. Start Carrera.
5. After seeing the sidearmed pitching, I am now baffled on why Collins isn’t on the roster and Perez is. Just the threat of a LH pinch hitter with power would lessen O’Day’s effectiveness. He cannot face lefties.
6. Andrew Miller has grown up! He was nasty last night.

Great comments everyone, you say what is on your mind. However, I do not believe in name calling. I do not want to ever see an electronic strike zone. I did not agree with the Kinlser steal attempt. I would not have walked Cruz in the 1st inning. Was Max done in the 8th with his low pitch count? Verlander is my guy. He has been affected from surgery and the media but I will always give him the ball when we need a win. Oh yeah, we also have Price waiting to pitch. It was just one game and Baltimore had the home field advantage. Go Tigers!

What do you think about replay? Many fans were against it, but the replay has shown beyond a shadow of a doubt, how many mistakes umpires make. That’s why I want an electronic strike zone. Mistakes by umpires can ambush a team.

Don’t panic friends! Honestly, we needed what happened last night. Folks need to bat like the bullpen is a dumpster fire. Back to back JACKS didn’t work…so lets try back to back ACES. EAT’EM UP!
