Sunday’s lineups: Tigers at Royals

KC 001

Miguel Cabrera was originally slated to play first base, but was switched to designated hitter to ward off some soreness in the ankle. Andrew Romine returns to the lineup for defensive purposes with ground-ball pitcher Rick Porcello on the mound. Bryan Holaday gets a second straight start behind the plate, but with Alex Avila hitting in Sanchez’s sim game Sunday and taking batting practice beyond that, it’s conceivable that Avila could return to the lineup Monday night against the White Sox.

The Royals return Billy Butler to the DH slot over Josh Willingham (who’s 9-for-24 with five extra-base hits lifetime against Rick Porcello, but who’s slumping) and move Alex Gordon down to the sixth spot in the order. Eric Hosmer bats cleanup.

  6. Nick Castellanos, 3B (4-for-7, 2 doubles, K)
  7. Bryan Holaday, C
  8. Andrew Romine, SS (1-for-2)
  9. Rajai Davis, CF (4-for-19, double, 5 K’s)

P: Rick Porcello

P: Jeremy Guthrie

Commenting on last blog’s comment> It’s a little too soon to make decisions for 2015’s outfield. But who should really be the regular centerfielder? A trade? JD has certainly earned a spot. Is he a better right fielder if they don’t re-sign Torii? With Torii’s age, do you give up on him after his performance this year? Will Andy Dirks ever be able to come back and perform well? Who is available within the organization? Davis/Collins/Carrera/Moya/etc?

Rajai and Martinez playing the corners, sign a defensive CF (with some speed) and let Dirks be your 4th OF’r…..there are several AAAA OF’rs that can support those 4.

CF FA options:
Emilio Bonifacio (30)
Endy Chavez (37)
Franklin Gutierrez (32)
Nyjer Morgan (34)
Colby Rasmus (28)
Grady Sizemore (32)
Denard Span (31)
Chris B. Young (31)

Already pissed about strike zone porcello had escobar struck out. Only right he got caught stealing

“[JD] Martinez’s .442 batting average vs. the Royals leads all players, while his 15 RBI are tied for the most and his five home runs ranks second” -mlb game notes

193 IP could take a toll

Why they keep throwing outside with the shift on?

Porcello not at all sharp.

50 pitches not through 2. Awful

There was play at 3b

What does Porcello have to do to get some of these pitches called strikes? I know he hasn’t been getting ball down but he’s certainly getting screwed a bit here

Good play by Holaday

Please leave Porcello in he’s been so wonderful

Porcello had to drop the bunt and he had the DP

Whatever the reason, I didn’t think Rick looked very good from the start. The Tigers need to get to Guthrie soon before their BP comes into it.

Well certainly time left in this game just doesn’t feel quite right does it?

5th inning time running out..kc pen will shut it down.

Kc pen in thats game

Dint understand not pinch hitting for Holaday. .dumb

Dint is almost as dumb as not pinch hitting for Holaday! Don’t understand not pinch hitting got Holaday.

During the season series Tigers bullpen was best than the KC BP

Bottom line Rick wasn’t good and hasn’t been lately! Is he hitting a wall? Hitting shoulda been better against Guthrie he isn’t a very void pitcher.
Not going to get angry about getting 2 of 3 in KC It goes back to the series in Minniapolis. 3-3 road trip but you gotta do better than 1-3 I against the twins.

He received no run support lately but he reached his career high in IP and he does not have the stamina to go over 200( it looks like that right now)
The Tigers are 8-9 vs the Twins and 8-9 vs CWS.
This game was the key of the season

Hardy should replace Coke from now on. Finally, farewell to Coke

If what they said on post game show is true Sale will pitch Wednesday. He was in line to pitch Monday…which would have him pitching to KC on Saturday. By pushing Sale back 2 days KC will not now see him? Is that a big Jab at the tigers or what?

He allowed 5 runs in five inning to KC last week. They are protecting their young Ace. He is younger than Porcello and with far bigger load of IP after being a reliever. And he still has a remote shot at the Cy Young

Okay well, I thought at the time that Brad was leaving Porcello in too long. It was obvious he didn’t have it and wasn’t going to get it. Considering the stakes of this game and the fact that KC can’t hit, I would have had a quick hook. I didn’t think they could hit any of our pitchers and they, in fact, didn’t. Typical of managers, they close the stable door after the horses have escaped. No originality to their thinking.
We don’t score many runs if Miggy is not contributing as was the case today.
The Royals again looked shaky and were fortunate to win. Today added at least two days to the clinching date. I won’t tempt fate; IF there is a clinching date.

Can they be 8-9 vs both Twins and White Sox? That’s a total of 17. I thought they only played each other 18-19 games and they have 3-4 games left with each.

Sorry, my bad. It was the heat of the moment

“No se puede invertar con tanta velocidad “@agoiticoa: @VizquelOmar13 Omar por qué Porcello no dejó caer el toque de Escobar para hacer doble play en la baja del 4to? Algo básico! Regáñalo!! Jaja”
“You cant do that kind of thing with that much speed. Omar why Porcello did not drop the Escobar´ bunt to make the DP in the bottom of the 4th?. Something basic( sic) “call his attention!”

“another Omar Vizquel idea to send Holaday to second on throw from left? Would not be surprised – #Tigers tie game on error by distracted 3B” Probably, the local TV crew was expecting the play because that the way caribbean baseball is played

1. Bull Pen work was not that bad. It was just inopportune. KC already had four runs.
2. Tied the score early enough if Rick had been in sinc. Not to be today.
3. Kinsler’s HR; uppercut it was, but out it went. Nearly 90 RBI’s from a 1 or 2 hitter has not been too bad.

Miggy failed us when we really needed him, especially on the DP out. I told my wife we had to be even before the sixth, or we were toast. Hello Melba. Dreaming a little, if we had the KC BP this year, we would have won 105 games. Sadly we have the Pen that is all Bull. I’m okay with a 2 game lead with 7 to go; surely we can rise against a bunch of Twinkies. But it surely would have put us in high cotton to have swept the KC Boys. Wasn’t going to happen. We have to beat the Sox, and the Twinks. If we can’t do that, we don’t deserve the Central title. Finally, agree with Rich that brad hung to long with Ricky P. It was obvious from the first inning.

I think our bats were on the plan by the 6th or so. even brad just put scrubs in to face holland. a sweep of a good club is extremely difficult to do in today’s game. I heard CLE is playing better ball lately – and KC have to deal with them for 3.1 games. The CHISOX are sending 2 easy pitchers and Sale at us…..7 games at home – which IMO is in our favor.

Still has me a bit worried asTigers had troubles with Twins ans Sox. However Brad has to really watch the pen. Maybe the Tribe can beat on K.C.

we just didn’t get enough hits tonight. that’s why we lost. bullpen was good. defense was good. base running was fine. ricky didn’t have it but needs rest anyhow. maybe this motivates him.

Other than the SF game, Ricky has been great. When the Sox took the 5-0 lead, only 2 runs were earned. Look up the games he has pitched. He has nod no run support. He could easily have 18 wins. Still not liking the manager’s being stubborn. Can our SP step up? How far can we go? Who believes? Go Tigers!

I am believing DB – big time. It was hard to expect a sweep – just need to take care of business this week enough to stay ahead.

Between the doubleheader debacle in Minnesota last month and yesterday’s loss, the Tigers went 18-9. That’s what you call a stretch run.

pretty damn good, it got us back in the thick of things – will be a fun week or at least an interesting week!

Missed the last few games. Sounds like Nathan is being relied upon and performing as though nothing has changed. That’s a mistake waiting to bite back really hard.

surely, you expected no less. it takes blowing leads in ALDS games at least to wake up management around here.

Just be thankful the Tigers don’t run airlines. “Sure he’s almost hit several bridges but he’s managed to avoid them. That’s experience.”

Wondering about Torii Hunter’s role with this team next year? According to advanced metrics he’s one of the worst defenders in the game. Nick Cast isn’t much better, either…but at least there is hope he’ll be better next year.,a credit Rob Rogacki from BYB for posting this link originally

Jackson wasn’t good on D this year either. Kinlser and Alex are way above average if you couldn’t guess.

I have mentioned that more than once along the year, only Kemp is worst than Hunter according to DRS.Still, i stick to my previous prediction, Hunter will be signed because his bat is MLB worthy with some rest and is the Tigers MO

looking at those defensive stats…and who is expected to be a FA this offseason…..I might pick up Denard Span to play CF. Is that nuts?

Nationals have an option for Span, they are nuts if they leave him walk away

Indeed a great stretch run indicates a veteran team. This team will take 5 of the next 7 games. KC must win them all. Hey Brad, are you reading this blog? Try pitching Soria in the 9th, or don’t you trust him? Go Tigers!

“RT @scottmerkin: In talking to Avi Garcia today about his Tigers days and former teammates, he mentioned that Victor Martinez likes Chicago.”
And Victor told Venezuelan TV during the last home series against the Tigers that back then the Tigers had not approached him about next year.

The ESPN in español people think that the Tigers wont sign him if they win the WS

Lineup vs. CWS: Kinsler 4, Hunter 9, Cabrera 3, V. Martinez DH, J. Martinez 7, Castellanos 5, Avila 2, Romine 6, Carrera 8. Lobstein starts.

KC lost the suspended game 4-3
