James McCann Day: Tigers vs. Giants

Alex Avila had no concussion symptoms Friday, Brad Ausmus said, and he probably could have started Saturday afternoon. With lefty Madison Bumgarner on the mound, however, Ausmus changed course and opted to give James McCann his first big-league start behind the plate. He’ll be hitting against Bumgarner and catching David Price. Welcome to The Show.

Other than that, it’s a pretty standard lineup. Miguel Cabrera gets another start at first base after playing there for eight innings through the rain delay Friday night. Ausmus said the rain delay after three innings seemed to help, since it got him off his feet for a few hours, though it also gave his sore right ankle a chance to stiffen up.

TIGERS (career numbers against Bumgarner)

  1. Ian Kinsler, 2B (0-for-2, walk)
  2. Torii Hunter, RF
  3. Miguel Cabrera, 1B (1-for-5, walk)

  4. Hunter Pence, RF (2-for-8, double, HR, walk, 3 K’s)
  5. Pablo Sandoval, DH (0-for-4, K)
  6. Andrew Susac, C
  7. Joaquin Arias, 3B (1-for-3, double)
  8. Matt Duffy, SS
  9. Gregor Blanco, LF (1-for-3, walk)

P: Madison Bumgarner

Please, guys, make me believe you don’t want that vacation in October.

For a while, I wanted to write some lines about the chat the players have at first base:
http://online.wsj.com/articles/ichiro-suzuki-uncensored-en-espanol-1409356461

The motivation for most Latin American is different, it is called Caribbean baseball. They want to break the opponent concentrationl. It is a more subtle form of the heckling banned in MLB . It is like the fake catches or tags they make all the time. Or shouting “I got it” like ARod did a couple of years ago when the bal, was not even near
BTW: Ichiro does not answer in English, neither Miguel

That’s a good article, thanks for sharing. I didn’t know any of that stuff.

Thanks for posting that. There was always some criticism of Ichiro in Seattle (I’m sure in NY too), for using an interpreter. But this explains it beautifully.

Torii’s too slowI I’m turning it off.

the SF giants: a real contending team.
.
well done brad and DD. pfft.

Unreal. McCann is giving Price a solid low target and David can’t hit it.
I expect if we get a real clunker today it will sap the juice out of these guys and essentially end the dream early.
This is a very big game today, especially after the start to it

Oh Miggy, that was beautiful.

50% of Cabrera better than the rest of the team but for Victor and Kinsler

Disappointing to see Ian correct his swing only to go right back to dropping his shoulder again.
Casty has to start hittin with men on, just not an RBI guy quite yet

5 K. That is the only way with this team

Ouch, ill advised theft by Rajai.
Speaking of McCann, he certainly does not look out of place does he?
Time to start playing ball Tigers.

Bumgarner is not fooling our hitters sow why are they swinging at 1st pitch when 2 runs down?

One can sense the fan futility. Evident in the stands, attendance and even here at a normally busy BLOG.

These Tiger’s Aces ain’t so Acey

Weird how it goes, Posey hits Price like crazy and Sandoval just looked lost

He did the damage early

The upcoming series with KC will most likely determine if fans will stick with the Tigers or kiss the season good-bye.

Pretty much last chance for us here in the 8th. I’m thinkin’ a walk to Miggy and a bomb by Victor to get us back in. Failing that, well I’m not feelin’ it.
Price had an excellent non-quality start. Probably hard to sleep for him tonight with that first inning that was one strike away from being a clean inning.

If kKnlser and Hunter could be on base once in while. Miguel has being leading off an inning around 20 % of the PA

If was good time to put a PH for Castellanos

Suarez, McCann Davis in the 9th?
Moya, Avila, Kelly?

Oh, yeah–forgot about Collins

WE cant have Suarez out there during a pennant race. He is too frustrating for me.

Or many of the starting pitchers

True enough.

Suarez leaves a lot to be desired. I just can’t make myself like the guy.

He is a rookie, he is not the only one playing bad defense.

Has Carrera ever gotten on base in a pinch hit situation? Why continue to throw him out there?

Absolut wrong choice and sequence of LHB PHers. You like EZ’s fpeed? Fine but he is very unlikely to get himself on base–let him PR.

He is more likely to have gotten on if he dropped down a bunt. Has he even tried that.
.
Frustrating.
.
— Bob

No Moya? Dumb

Rajai will have temper tantrum if he is pinch hit for by a AA Rookie.
.
— Bob

Totally uninspiring managing in the 9th.

They have 6 games vs KC, they can erase that nextweek

Quickly and quietly with bullets still sitting in your chamber. Boy Brad, I have tried to defend you but you are making it harder and harder. These guys are more worried about Mon – Wed. This is feeling more and more like the end of the 2012 season when they were 3 back with like 16 or so to play. Don’t count on the Royals folding like the White Sox did that year.
.
Did I say frustrating.
.

This one starts and ends with the crappy starting pitching that puts you so far behind the 8 ball in the first and it’s hard recover from that. These so called Aces not doing their jobs ……Price Scherzer Verlander …Porcello who had been your most consistent pitcher has been very poor. They just can’t seem to get all facets of their game clicking on all cylinders. Pretty disappointed.

Duffy injured,They lost Holland too

Holland being rested for the weekend.

KC owned the Giants 1 month ago and the Giants own the Tigers! Enough said, this team just doesn’t seem strong enough to make the playoffs, something DD did not take into consideration when assembling the playoff pitching staff!

Well to be fair Giants were struggling a month ago and have recently perked up. But still be bad pitching from tigers

Can you tell me why Aliva is up there…to hit? (the guy still looks like he’s in a daze)?
Why not Collins ? Ausmus must think there’s still 162 more games to play.
Carrerra, with his speed he should have been up there to at least bunt to get on…there is no strategy
That’s managing…I’m sorry… IF WE WIN THIS THING…IT’LL BE ON A WING AND A PRAYER. This team must have a thing against bunting, they’ve blown so many scoring opportunities….all or nothing is their strategy.
-John

I just wish everyone on this team had the passion of David Price. True to form of an Ace, you have to get him early. he settled in and pitched a great game. This one is on Tori and Ian. If Suarez bothers you, count the rally killers that Kinsler has started.
Our lineup is basically 3-4; if they do well, we have a chance; if not we’re toast. Julio is just too streaky; Rookie 1 gets a pass; I get tired of watching Raji think he has been
appointed as savior of the team. Were we to make the playoffs, his arm and defense will kill us. It’s slowly flying away, Tiger Guys and gals, and the Giants are in a great position to sweep Sunday. Hard to believe our away record is the second best in the majors. This team needs a Nate “Bubblegum” Robertson type guy. He’s not there, or I haven’t seen him yet. Again, VMart shows why he should be the MVP, Miggy shows why he has been an MVP, and Coke shows that sometimes Pepsi is indeed second best. Finally, to repeat, the passion and desire that Price exhibits needs to be the goal of everyone who sits on the bench. I know that Duffy is out for KC, but he has nothing to do with the way that our team has played this weekend. The torch has begun to flicker. Is there hidden passion in our guys to keep hope alive; to keep the flame burning. We’ll know soon enough.

The only flames we Tiger fans are going to see this year is when the thing hits the ground and explodes… when they are eliminated.

Hope springs eternal….Thanks Dumbrowski for getting us into Spring Training 2015 mode in the middle of a 2014 race. This one is now almost over and it is all laid at your feet. Does anyone think Scherzer is going to get more than the Tigers offered him in free agency? Not with this year’s performances. How many times a week is this pitching staff going to give up big numbers in individual innings like they have the past 3 weeks.? Tigers only hope is that Ilitch has the cojones to fire DD and apologize to the Tiger fans for letting him screw up this season. He should do it now, like AZ did with Towers. This is downright pathetic.

KC melting down at Yankee Stadium

In the past couple of weeks, someone said that KC was playing at a .714 pace and they couldn’t keep it up. Well, they have been at about .600 and still pullling away. And Mariners have moved ahead of tigers for last spot. .500 isn’t going to cut it.

I’m so disappointed. So difficult for them to win at home. They play so conservative they are just plain boring most of the time. I never thought in a million years that the season would be over in September, but that is how it’s looking to me.

Finger and toes crossed . They have to beat the giants tonite . Then play much better than K.C. in the games ahead . I hate to look back at October 2012 it brings back alot of bad memories !!

The way the A’s are playing they might fall out of the wild card.

@TonyPaul1984 Asked Ausmus why no Moya or Collins in the 9th. Said odds of a homer weren’t good

Here’s a sobering fact. Tigers have 6 games to play with front-running KC. If they play extremely well with expected good results they might win 4 of those 6. That basically ties them with KC. On top of that KC has two games in hand. (Well one with one being in “suspense”)

Brad’s comments about the HR odds are pathetically weak. The ball was carrying well.
They had as much chance to park one than Carerra getting on or Avila not striking out.

I hope Jones can figure out what is happening in the pre-game BP sessions! The same routine has these SP’s coming in and getting 1-2 outs in the 1st inning, then getting shelled causing a big inning and a Tiger’s deficit. Gotta change that tune!

dudes. tonight i turn a left hand turn in my car and my steering wheel locked. was lucky to not have a car bearing down on me in the oncoming lane. ended up being fine. but shit – made me realize – it’s more than wins and loses. glad to be able to hear the game tomorrow. go tigers.

Oh boy I am glad you are ok

The dreaded National TV night coming up and a rookie needing to be a stopper for a fading team.
Read about the logic of leading off Carerra. The logic of Carerra being used in that inning should only have been as a pinch-runner. It was the perfect time to employ the long ball potential of the call-ups, Moya and Collins. In fact that is WHY they were called up.

Either way, he was wrong. His logic called for Kelly not Carrera since he needed someone able to be on base. That is why Avila fit into his logic but he could not use him but for McCann.

Yankees have mow retired all numbers from 1 to 10 but the Tigers refuse to retire 1 and 3.

Cafardo notes:
“Of Martinez’s 29 homers, 28 have come with the difference in the game three runs or fewer” Can you say clutch?

Lineup vs. SF: Kinsler 4, Hunter 9, Cabrera 3, V. Martinez DH, J. Martinez 7, Kelly 8, Castellanos 5, Avila 2, Romine 6. Lobstein starting.

KC’s future Cy Youngs are outpitching our former Cy Youngs. Tigers chances somewhere between slim and none.

Many fans think the Tigers show no heart. The Yankees have already scheduled their vacations for the next month. That was uninspired playing and a boring game , more boring than the pre game ceremony

Hogg
“Sanchez is taking “baby steps”. Soria is almost ready to go. #LuPu is doing well, but won’t be activated. #trainersroom”

Couldn’t agree more Rich. People can ralk about the manager who makes some interesting decisions …or the hitting which goes flat occasionally. The defense and the pen. But what it comes down to is Cy 1, Cy 2 and Cy 3 stinking more than not. Porcello who was very reliable all of a sudden reverts back and the injury to Sanchez. These starting pitchers are putting us behind the 8 ball early and often. I think someone said it a few weeks ago ……I’ve never left so many games early and shut the tv off ever.

i guess the starters were due. starters have been good for years. with the pen and offense doing well…..it makes sense the starts are ******ing the bed nearly every night. Defense has been rotten lately too. This team has a difficult time playing on 3-4 cylinders.

batting kelly 6th huh? that’s nice. *wet fart sound*

There has been a change in the way the game is played. The “quality start” (six innings with 3 or less runs allowed) is an anachronism from the steriod era. You show me a rotation that goes six innings with a 4.50 ERA in this day and age, and I’ll show you a sub-.500 team. The ones in line for the postseason are shutting down the opposition entirely. You can’t give up four early runs then walk off with your head held high because you still went six innings. Seeing a lot of that with this Detroit staff this year.
