Thursday’s lineups: Tigers at Indians

Miguel Cabrera finishes out the series as the DH, but Alex Avila remains out. Meanwhile, two September call-ups get starts in the finale. Tyler Collins, who started three games in April after making the Opening Day roster, fills in for Torii Hunter. Collins gets the start in right over fellow September callup Steven Moya. Meanwhile, Hernan Perez starts at short, giving Eugenio Suarez — 3-for-26 since last Tuesday — the night off.

max better be good with 3 nearly automatic outs in the lineup tonight. it is what it is.

Collins, Holaday, and Perez that is

Not to mention a Max hadn’t been great lately and he’s had trouble with the Indians all year. So Cy Scherzer prove it to me prove it that you can be the guy cause I’m not convinced you are “the man” …an Ace steps up

Avila is O-U-T, so Holaday there is a must.
As to Suarez and Hunter, I would say that in the last while they are far more worthy of being called automatic outs than their replacements might be.
Suarez, as noted by Jason, is 3 for his last 26 and Torii has 1 hit in 13 at bats this series.
So good on Brad for having the guts to put Collins and Perez in.

Hunters in injured. Foot

that is news to me

Can we break the bad habit of not scoring a runner from 3rd and nobody out?

Rod says in between play–I say the ball was elevated enough to tag automatically. Casty hit that ball as hard as it could be hit. Tough break

Mowery: McCann 2 for 4 vs Bauer

So much for the automatic out. He was 233 vs the the 223 of Avila

Rod and Mario both seem to think Castellanos was on base that inning.
Nice start and for once, we had the pitcher by the throat and did NOT lem get away.

Tigers 3rd in MLB, runs scored with runner at 3B.
Leads MLB in SF
Tigers could be bad, the others are worse

Still second in RS/G in MLB.

I get it but I mean recently. The last two games they have been horrible at it.

that will happen along the season

8 times being shutout this year, 12 in 2013

11 pitches and nobody out, yet.

Holaday SO/BB is as good as Avila. Similar non bat. He is a backup catcher and gets not much opportunities.

C’mon Max-let’s just throw strikes

A different Miggy tonight. Doesn;t seem engaged.
I was just going to comment on Gomes and the bugger blasts another double.
Salvador Perez is considered by most to be the best young catcher in the game,
Gomes is darn close and may be better defensively.
Born in Brazil!!

Max is not particularly sharp but powerful enough to make up for it.

Would love to see the Tigers get some add-on runs.

Dan & Jim said that Tyler Collins should have caught that ball.

His is injured. He did not look normal

Who is injured?

Scherzer , he looks different there

Sorry, should have been a question, not and afirmattion

Tooooooo Maaaaany Pitches

The E was for Kinsler

Dan & Jim said there should not be an error on Kinsler because it was Collins play to make.

Tigers better add on some runs.

Gameday:
Kinsler kept waiting for Collins to call for that baseball. He never did. Still, until Kinsler hears something it’s his ball.

Second time for Kinsler, did the same with Victor around 1B

Lead off walk…not exactly acey. And these guys don’t appear like they are going to let up while Tiger’s hitters were apparently done after the 1st

I’m trying to remain positive. It’s difficult with the crummy at-bats. Hope we can hold on.

Oh, man, we need a DP.

Max throws way way too many pitches.

Oh, crap.

Dan & Jim say Casty is taking extra practice on his footwork at 3rd.

it would be nice if one or two of our outfielders could consistently throw to home plate like a professional. goll dang.

This is exactly what happens when you continually throw this many pitches and unfortunately the hitters stopped too. But Max this isn’t good.

What is he waiting?

If a DH has ever deserved to be an MVP is Victor

Totally agree

Just when you think Miggy is out of his funk…..

He’s looked awful tonight.

You could see this coming a mile away. Tigers from pitching to hitting just not good enough. Cleveland keep pushing it while the tigers just trying to hold on for their lives. That almost never works out.

Will we see more “hacking away”? No patience, at all. It’s infuriating!

Only 2 runs were earned

In fact, it was a QS

Sorry there was nothing quality about that start.

You can see the way this game is going….I had to shut this Indian announcer down.
He so excitable…..

And Holaday delivering form both sides of the plate

Late and close, Miguel is on. Now, Suarez?

Sac fly? Anybody?

Dan just said the Indians have 10 walk off wins at home. Ugh!. Please, not another one.

Let’s win this one for COKE!

Yes. 2 runs.

Suarez says the spot is mine

VICTOR!!!

we’re about to serve a soul crushing loss to the indians before we head home. yeeeaah buddy

Pile it on boys, pile it on.

Batting around, again

There you go. Romine drives 2 more in. 11-4.

romine isn’t going to be fooled 2x in 1 inning, you know!

Max would’ve had a shutout if the outfield defense wasn’t so bad. Collins catches the ball he should’ve and Davis doesn’t play a single into a double ( Gomes ground ball would’ve been a DP).

No complaints from me. They also made some fabulous grabs in the OF and we got the big hits when we needed them. Go Tigers !!! Great win.

KS on to NYY – who won tonight. We’re on to play SF. both tough!

SF might be harder, then again we’re playing at home and CLE playing on the road

The most encouraging thing To me was actually Jim Johnson.
He is mid 90s with a pretty wicked breaking ball.
Smart acquisition.
The nightmare that was our BP is now showing signs of becoming a force. If Soria can return and become effective this can a turning point

1. 4 Shutdown innings by the Pen after 1 Debacle Inning.
2. Scoring the go ahead run in extra innings is great; scoring 7 is hitting the jackpot.
3. Fizzman continues his reinvention.
There should have been no need for an 11th., but we’ll go there another time. Great win; 3 of 4 on Tribe Turf; put a hurt on the Drummer Boy. getting down to the nitty and grittty.

Nice end to the game. Cokie did it again – he has his swagger back and I could not be happier. Nice inning by Johnson too. Victor is just ridiculous – can’t imagine this season without him being the force he is. Am glad he can give Miggy time off, just hope him playing first base so many days in a row won’t wear on him too much. I hate it when Mario and Rod say something and then immediately after the opposite happens – like last night how good Miggy has been swinging the bat and then he has a horrible strikeout. I wish they would keep their mouths shut. There were good and bad plays in the outfield but that Collins play we just have to chalk up to having different personnel on the field and assume that won’t happen again, but that ball is caught the game is very different. Welcome home boys!

No team is perfect, but for cripes sake, they have got to tighten up the defense. Where’s a bunt when your life depends on it.

how bad to they want to get this game in tonight? how opposed to a saturday double header are they?

This tam was built on a premise “defense is over rated” but for Pocello, Coke and Johnson, they are ( or were , JV..) K /FB pitchers . Of course Davis can make an adventure of a FB and the miscommunications between the Kinsler and the OF and between the OF are unforgivable
Bunting means playing for a run, and one run is not enough with the BP. Everyone but Ausmus wanted Perez bunting and I think Ausmus was right
” If you play for one run, that’s all you’ll get”

The Tigers now lead MLB in runs /game 4.71

think it might rain tonights game away

I have pointed this before:

In a year in which the MLB world is perpetually hounding Verlander, his FIP is 3.90. Chris Tillman, the O’s percieved “ace”, 4.07. Hmmm.

ElT, Pitching, defense, and hitting. I have said it for my entire baseball career, when I started coaching little league in 1991. We lost Inglesies, now Jackson. Our left fielder, Davis, made such a weak throw to the plate last night. Yes, Max kept us in the game. We lost Rondon and Zumaya. I still do not see very much emotion on this team. Will somebody please fire them up? Please no more polite baseball. I love the way Kinsler plays the game. So he pops up for outs. He leads the team in hits. Go Tigers!

Could be but not the Tigers . For years ,they have been at the bottom in defense like the Money ball A´s were.
Jackson was having an off year in defense by traditional, advanced metrics and the eye test. In fact, JD was the less bad OF for the team before Jackson left and remains so

15 days into the season I wanted to be a contrarian with a friend and I assured him Victor would be the “champion bat” , he would win the batting tittle over Miguel. I was sure to be wrong. Maybe not.

Sad they continue to run Miggy out there all those games against the Indians – a very beatable team. Now SF is in town, and now we’ll need Miggy. He’s got to rest or he’ll continue to be hurt.
