Sunday’s lineups: Tigers at White Sox

Brad Ausmus didn’t wait before deciding on giving Miguel Cabrera the day off. He’s not sitting him for a stretch, but he considers him a day-to-day situation.

Unless the matchup dictates otherwise, Ausmus said, look for Don Kelly to start at first base most days when Cabrera does not. He’s there today, with Victor Martinez at DH.

The White Sox traded Adam Dunn to Oakland this morning, so their offense will have one less slugger for Rick Porcello. Andy Wilkins gets the start at first base, with Jose Abreu at DH. Leury Garcia starts at shortstop with Alexei Ramirez off.

Since the latest (that we know of) aggravation of Miggy’s injury on August 20, he’s hitting .190 with .447 OPS. In light of that, Kelly is an upgrade. Crazy times.

Very quietly, Kelly has had some good at-bats last few weeks — not all the time, but more often than he had been. Still not a good matchup against a lefty, but better overall than he had been.

I’ll say! It’s beyond belief almost.
No D’Aza or Dunn. Those are good things.
Man- how on earth did DD NOT get Andrew Miller?

Anyone else beginning to watch Cleveland’s move? I was almost rooting for KC last night. Wouldn’t mind seeing KC beat them today. But either way, you have to like seeing those two playing each other. A win-win situation for Tigers.

Given Cabrera’s situation, I would like to see Mike Hessman, who plays both first and third, as a September call up. But I know it won’t happen (partly because of the pressure on the 40 man roster). The obvious position players coming are Perez and McCann (the latter of whom is not on the 40 man). Maybe Collins and/or Moya as insurance in case of injuries.

So no one commented on my Longstreet remark last night. (Just random thought) He was a Confederate general, actually a very good one, who I think Joba bears some resemblance to. Google it.

nice

Kelly looked very good last night. Selective AB’s. Completely agree with Rich’s and Jason’s comments. At this point I’d play without Miguel as long as you can get away with it. Maybe 2-3 weeks almost total rest will help. Can’t hurt.

Not a good start…a ball JD screwed up….walking Avisail, suarez with 2 mistakes. Crappy baseball boys

Is this how it’s gonna be today?

I’d rather see Romine out there with Porcello pitching.

He moved the wrong way on the Gillaspie hit initially. Defense letting them down again.
Like I mentioned yesterday, JD could DH and VMart could play some 1st at times.
JD is a much better fielder when he is DHing.

I sure hope this game isn’t ruined here in the 1st inning.

That was some atrocious defense. You just want to fire up the plane for Cleveland now, fellas? Let’s go.

That idiot screaming with every pitch being thrown is getting on my nerves

The scouting report on Suarez was pretty accurate. I remember reading that he makes some athletic plays but lacks concentration on routine ones. We see that all too frequently up here at the big league level.
I’m thinking Hernan might get some game action when he is called up.

Porcello why weren’t you at 1st? Just keep shooting yourselves in the foot boys. Especially if you are not going to be able to hit today either

That Eaton is amazing. JD lazy lob just took us out of the DP–then Rick fails to cover the bag?
What the he!! is going on?

Looks like the (training) wheels have just fallen off.

And another error. Not sure this one is going to be worth watching pretty soon.

Tigers playing like chumps today…mental errors, so far it’s a nightmare…
4-0…sorry, 5-0….can we start over please?

Oookay, I surrender. I can go down to any local playground and see this kind of baseball. I’ve walked away from more Tigers games this season……..

I know me too. ..to nice out and too much that could be done to waste an afternoon on this. Guess too busy congratulating themselves for winning yesterday to a minor league pitcher to worry about today.

it is these kind of efforts that I don’t get. You are in the middle of pennant race. You just got back to equal footing with KC and you come out and play like this. Routine ground balls getting kicked around, dropping routine fly balls, no urgency in getting throws back in. Just mailing this one in. I can handle losing but not like this. First rule is catch the damn ball.

Porcello ERA 3.06. FIp 3.68. The defense backed him all season long. He was due to regress a little.
Every candidate for the Cy Young was hit hard this weekend but for Kluber

He was due to regress?? These were not spectacular plays that needed to be made. These were routine. This isn’t about regression its about crappy fielding and crappy hitting. Sorry you act like we should expect this and routine plays shouldn’t be made

Yes, I do expect a defense that played better than expected behind him to be bad once in a while. With The Tigers SO or FB , grounders will kill any pitcher that cant SO 9, 10 per game.

They know their best player is out. They dont know how long

Marty, I think Joba leans a little more towards Jeb Stuart.

Victor is not out.
Miggy is not there best player right now and has not been for a few moons.

Why can’t Adam Eaton be a Tiger?

Tigers need a player like Adam Eaton…..a lot of winning energy.

3 unearned runs.

FIP 3.68. ERA 3.12. The difference is defense.

Good teams, meaning championship teams, have a way of limiting bad games obviously but even more so avoiding the contagion from spreading across into other areas of the game.
Too often, everything, falls apart on this team concurrently.

I count 8 errors so far. 3 actual. 4 mental fielding. 1 base-running. Did I miss any? I …..um…..er….duh…..nearly speechless.

And they are coming back

Oh, lord have mercy.

Dan & Jim said before the game that Miguel had been dealing with ankle issues for quite a long time. No one has said what’s wrong. Sprain? Torn tendon? Tendonitis? Plantar fact****? I don’t know how to spell the 2nd word. Hope I’m wrong.

Plantar fasciitis. Pujols had the same problem just after signing with LAA

They said he originally had a high ankle sprain in 2010. Appearently it has caused him problem occasionally since then.
.
Can’t win 3 of 4 from this team….well that’s more than pathetic ….it’s unacceptable.

Thats not what Rod and Mario said. Apparently there are conflicting reports

Cleveland wins tonight and Tigers remain in first but Cleveland back at 2.5.

So bad, it’s just inexcuseable.

I figured I would cool it with my criticisms of our beloved Tiger Team…It looked like we
were over the hump with playing badly….but oops, Here we go again..
We lose another game to the White Sox…A team to be reckoned with again this year
(Three more games at Comerica).Adam Eaton is a Tiger killer, what a rally starter w/Abreu, Garcia
Amazing how we were able to beat this team at all.
Our team looks dead. I believe it reflects its leadership. Hopefully, I will have to eat those words.
Next stop a very good(Hungry) Cleveland team….

Call-ups for the Tigers: Collins, Moya, Perez, Lobstein, Ryan, McCann, Ray.
Iott

Tigers recalled Drew VerHagen and placed him on the 60-day disabled list to make room on the 40-man for James McCann.
Iott too

Like they did with Marte

On the Tigers: Did MVP seasons from Verlander and Cabrera in ’11, ’12, and ’13 hide flaws of an otherwise good-not-great team?

@jonmorosi Cabrera and the rotation, yes. Bullpen issues are nothing new, those teams were bad defensively, and lacked offensive depth.

Jason:
Steven Moya, Tyler Collins, Hernan Perez joining #Tigers tomorrow in Cleveland. Robbie Ray, Kyle Lobstein, James McCann to follow Tuesday.

Tomorrow brings a new game and opportunity.

I’m hearing that the team received some kind of stern talking to today. No details.

So they’re saying it’s the Cabrera ankle injury in Cleveland at the end of 2010? Wasn’t that an unnecessary pickoff throw in a nothing game?

Yes but if that is true , why they extended him until 2023? Not a symptom in 4 years?
Should be something new. He had no HR power in April but had no problems running or fielding .

Didn’t he hit a HR at the All-Star Game?, not many since….his eye contact
to the ball seems suspect as well….he swings and misses quite a bit lately….
looking very bad at the plate….pitchers didn’t seem threatened by him at all.

Henning retwitted by Heyman ( I dont follow Henning)
Brad Ausmus did indeed come down on his team after today’s slop-fest. No one would quote him. But word was Ausmus made point “effectively.”

What time did some of the Tigs retire before their last game with the Sox? Seems like when a few of them get to Party Cities like NYC and Chicago, they get in late, at least 5 of them played like they didn’t get much sleep.
Sorry to be a ‘party-pooper’ but these guys are getting paid the big bucks to get enough rest to play like the Central Division’s first place means something more than a good night out to them.
I hope that Brad Ausmus is able to levy a large enough fine on them to get them back on track?

As a life-long Tigers fan…and I’m old…this group is the most disappointing I can ever remember. As soon as something goes wrong they fold. Not championship material, after all.
