Saturday (Game 1) lineups: Tigers at White Sox

Brad Ausmus says he doesn’t have a set plan on how he’ll settle his lineup for Game 2 (it’ll depend in part on how the opener goes), but his Game 1 lineup against Chris Sale is fairly predictable. Bryan Holaday gets the start at catcher (left-handed hitters are batting .150 off Sale this year). Rajai Davis is back in the lineup in center.

The only change in the White Sox lineup from last night is that Jose Abreu will DH the day game, giving Adam Dunn a start at first base. Abreu had two errors last night, but he likely would’ve DHed one of these games regardless.

TIGERS (career numbers against Sale)

  1. Ian Kinsler, 2B (5-for-17, HR, 2 walks, 3 K’s)
  2. Torii Hunter, RF (5-for-20, double, triple, HR, walk, 4 K’s)
  3. Miguel Cabrera, 1B (6-for-24, 2 HR, 6 walks, 5 K’s)
  4. Victor Martinez, DH (13-for-25, 3 doubles, 2 HR, walk, 3 K’s)
  5. J.D. Martinez, LF (2-for-10, 4 K’s)
  6. Nick Castellanos, 3B (1-for-6, 3 K’s)
  7. Bryan Holaday, C (1-for-2, K)
  8. Eugenio Suarez, SS (0-for-2, 2 K’s)
  9. Rajai Davis, CF (3-for-8, double)

P: Max Scherzer

WHITE SOX (career numbers off Scherzer)

  1. Adam Eaton, CF (2-for-8, 2 walks, 8 K’s)
  2. Alexei Ramirez, SS (7-for-54, 2 doubles, 5 walks, 7 K’s)
  3. Jose Abreu, DH (2-for-13, double, 3 K’s)
  4. Adam Dunn, 1B (10-for-47, 3 HR, 5 walks, 23 K’s)
  5. Avisail Garcia, RF (2-for-6, triple, HR)
  6. Conor Gillaspie, 3B (3-for-15, double, HR, 2 walks, 3 K’s)

P: Chris Sale

in his 5 starts in august so far he’s been pitching into the 6th maybe 7th innings, giving about about 2 walks along with 8Ks and about 5 hits. Not untouchable, but we’ve gotta get to him today….or get to the bullpen….which might be very possible after how much they got worked last night.

1.8 ERs per start in august….but 2.8 Rs per start…..apparently the defense hasn’t been good behind him

Justin Miller DFA

Im sorry what does that at bat have to do with a sprained ankle. Miguel just isn’t seeing the ball. The swings are horrible.

OMG

Who woulda thunk huh?

this offense is NOT dead…..albeit Miggy looks like Inge because brad won’t grow a pair and sit him….

Maybe sit him tonight. Have the trainer and doctor work on the ankle. Get him a wheelchair or an ECV. Whatever it takes. Maybe the rest of the team can handle the Sox rookie. Let’s hope the Tiger rookie can hold off the Sox.
.
What a great first inning. Especially vs Sale. He may settle in now so Max will have to hold them off.

I would sit him against LH to begin with

It infuriates me.

Dickerson and Price just made comments that Miggy might not get better until next season . So here we go just like last September ….

Someone could tell them , it is not October yet

This year he’s hitting 302 against lefties and 301 against righties?
.
2 errors in the inning and you gave away a run. Boneheaded moves

yes, he is up 75 points vs LH more than a hundred in OPS over the last month but still does not look to recover the fluid movement he used to have

Come on Max, you don’t have to copy JV’s error. And now Kinsler gives back his HR.

This time was his fault but Scherzer FIP 2.81 ERA 3.16. Defense has not been good behind him

Dont forget that started with him throwing the ball away he has nobody to blame but himself.

Yet is batting average is practically identical. Does it have tomdomwith power?

Gee, Casty, I know that is a tough spot to be in vs a pitcher like Sale but when you know he is throwing strikes, don’t just take that 3rd one. I’d rather have you make an out swinging.

Taking lessons from Avila

Eaton just eats up Tiger pitching.

He’s feastin on anything down in the zone. Throw him high and hard.
He will get his team back into this game.

The ump is missing good pitches by both pitchers. That just ain’t right.

both of these flyball pitchers have only gotten ground outs….lol after that 1st inning they were both like HOLD UP

So there it goes. The 3 runs was not enough for Max.

DAMMIT

Max really blew it now. Sale is in a groove. The only hope now is to make him work and get the pitch count high enough to get him out of the game.

Yep Self Proclaimed Ace got a gift of am3 run lead against Sale and he crapped it away. And your right Sale is in a groove and Max isnt. Way to go dude….excellent !

Rod is saying exactly what I was going to say–the Sox have not hit a fastball all day and Max keeps trying to get them with slider or curve. He is much smarter than that.
It all starts with Eaton.
I love that guy—he’s a ball player

They need to go high and tight once or twice on Eaton. Try to stop him from diving out over the plate.
I don’t know why Scherzer/Holaday are so in love with the secondary pitches today.

Me and you both at the same time, Dan.

Ya those pitches aren’t working at all.

Kinsler has fixed his swing.
Castellanos needs to swing.
Max is giving fat pitches on which to swing.
Miggy can’t anything even if he were to swing.
VMart has the perfect swing.
All the Sox have to do is swing.

Yep a true Ace. .keep serving up those gopher balls Max…thats the way to win.

Like Cespedes he kills the fastball

And the same goes for Dunn

I know Rich told me not to put too much stock in the Gameday strike zone but Max did have 2 pitches clearly inside the Gameday strike zone that may have gotten him out of that 3rd inning. The ump called them balls.
.
I guess it isn’t going to make too much difference if Max keeps giving up HRs. It was on a curveball according to Gameday so you are right about them hitting Max’s secondary pitches.

Their best hope now is to get Sale out of the game and see if they can hit the Sox bullpen. He is at 88 pitches after just 5 innings. BUT Max and the Tiger bullpen cannot afford to give up any more runs. I guess that is obvious, illinoifan. LOL

Morosi;
Rod Allen’s observation on the FOX Sports Detroit telecast is absolutely right: Cabrera isn’t able to use his legs in his swing.

Side replay really showed it: The first half looks normal, then he just lunges at ball. Has 1 HR in last 145 PA’s, longest spell of career.

Jason:
First 3-strikeout game this year for Miguel Cabrera, who’s now in an 0-for-15 slump. Hasn’t K’ed 4 times in a game since 9/17/2010.

They have to sit him tonight. He is hurting and hurting the team. Give the guy a break. Use Kelly at 1st base. A LH bat against a RH rookie.
.
It looks like it will be a battle of the bullpens for the rest of this game.

How far will they go with Sale? He’s at 105 now.
.
Did Holaday hit any HRs before this season?

It looks like I am talking to myself. No wonder with the way this game has gone so far.

I go away for a bit and come back and Scherzer is striking out everybody with fastballs. Yeesh.
And this umpire SUCKS! Get an electronic zone so the umpire only has to blow calls like that HBP/swinging strike to Hunter. That even got me pissed off, and that ain’t easy.

“Get an electronic zone.” I never thought I’d hear you say that, Rich.

I can’t see plays like that on Gameday.
.
Max = 0 BB, 11 SO. But in between, oh my.

Miguel still can field

he has been bailing out Eugenio for a week

Yes, but he can’t run after a ball. If he hits the ball, he limps down the line.

True , the single that started all vs Price should have been caught if he were fully healthy

see, he made me a liar, Just don’t like all the drama.

Reed = 96-97-98 mph fastballs but nearly gave up a run.

Why in the world do you not pull Cabrera now for a pinch runner?

I still cant figure out why Brad let him stay in . Made no sense at all.

Words right out of my mouth……………..

Ditto.
They might feel he can come home on a homer and that realistically is about the only way. They’ll be sorry if he limps nto an out or prevents someone behing him from getting into scoring position.
I think Ausmus is not managing to his obvious intellectual potential.
I guess that means I think he is being stupid about this.

Why make him run/stand out there if he is hurting? I thought they might have a shot at the Sox bullpen but…………….and now in the 9th it is the bottom 3 with Kinsler if anyone gets on.

Kathy, I’ve been in favor of an electronic strike zone for about three years now. I don’t think the job can be performed by a human. You get a different zone every game. It’s like if football games were played on fields of various dimensions, depending on who the officials were. 150 yards one day, 82 yards the next…..

Not to mention the Aussies description of it as “an invisible box that floats in the air.”

Killed by Kinsler again. One of those games when they score in the 1st and then take a nap for 8 innings.

Checked back in the game. Every RBI hit by the Sox was off a secondary pitch by Max except the error by Kinsler in the 1st inning.

1. BP streak is still in tact.
2. VMart is trying to carry this team right now. Kinsler is starting to level off on the upper cut just a bit.
3. Kinsler didn’t strike out in 5 AB’s. The team had 15.
It was a rough go for the Rookies. Even though Miggy could buy and sale me a 1000 times, I feel sorry for him right now. Which Rookie starter will prevail tonight?

Well Max blew it..no way around it. They has this game in the palm of his hands and gophered balled it away. Frankly he is great 25% of the time he’s bad 25% of the time and frankly average 50% of the time. Now his 7th game of the year he’s had a below average outing.

By the way Sale is a great pitcher and it’s no embarrassment losing to someone of his ilk …..it’s kinda incredible they got three runs off of him. This is all on the pitcher.

Hilarious Max. “I has great stuff except for 2 pitches” ya your great max Kudos to you! Keep telling yourself that.

GK, I know you have taken some grief for your consistent badgering that Max is no Ace but I think I for one have gotten to the point where I have to say I agree with you. An ace takes a three run lead out of the first ending and nails the coffin shut. He has had several opportunities this season to step up and pick this team up on his shoulders but just has not done it. Remember JV’s MVP season the way he just kept picking up the team shutting down opposing teams over and over again. You just knew he was going to do it almost everytime. NO such confidence with Max. I wish Ricky would have been on the hill today!! I bet he shuts the Pale Sox down and we cruise to a win. I agree that Max simply didn’t have the juice to do what we needed him to after the guys in the first inning served it up for him on a silver platter.

He pitched by the reports and pitched to the batters weakness. Maybe, pitching to his strength like Fister does was the answer. Maybe because Dunn´s HR was his 460th and Abreu is having an historic season.
He is top candidate for the Cy Young:
http://espn.go.com/mlb/features/cyyoung

Well of he believes he is as great as he thinks he is he needs to realize it’s not working and make the adjustments….as Sale did. An Ace steps up. It seems when we need one of these guys to be a stopper or step up they just don’t. There seems to be something lacking. By the way the hits he gave up with the exception of a couple they were poor pitches. Ya you got 11 strikeouts but you couldn’t get them when you needed it.

Rookie two got on base in the 9th . Pity Kinsler was unable to deliver with him and Davis on.

I don’t think there’s a clear definition of “ace”. I just like pitchers to be consistent. In this day and age, a top notch starter should hold a 3-run lead.

Let me say that you may think he is no Ace but that doesn’t make him an evil traitor. Perhaps in your eyes it does.

Not sure who you’re referring to here Dan but I certainly don’t think Max is anywhere an evil traitor. Just disappointed in his ability to be a light’s out Ace this year when he has had several opportunities to do so. He’s a great pitcher and I’m thrilled he’s wearing our uniform, just have wished he would have stepped up a little more to pick up the team when he’s had the chance to be donned the ace of the rotation this year. Maybe he will yet do just that down the stretch!! Sure would be nice!!

On Cabrera and his injury status, both Jim Leyland and Brad Ausmus have played him through rather debilitating injuries, so I don’t know what to tell you.

That’s a collective you.
