Friday’s lineups: Tigers vs. Mariners

Rick Porcello spent 4 1/2 seasons on the same team with Austin Jackson. He said yesterday he has not talked with him since the trade, but he hopes to do so this weekend. Before that, however, they have a game to play.

“It’s obviously going to be a little strange to see him on the other side,” Porcello said, “but honestly, at this point right now, the way things have been going, I really don’t care. I’m trying to get his ass off just the same as everybody else.”

Jackson has been relatively quiet lately atop the Seattle lineup, but he has scored each of the last three times he has reached base.

Kinsler vs Hernandez: 19 for 77 11 SO
Davis 4 for 14 4 SO

Hernandez isn’t pitching tonight.

My bad , I was posting in another blog about him

I’ve got an idea KC is heading into a trap series this weekend in Minny.

miggy hurt thumb on tag. great.

2 sloppy plays already.

stolen base. 3 sloppy plays.

Rick must feel jinxed. A trap series in Minnny?

I’ve got the MLB.TV free game tonight. What is it with Kinsler and Hunter? Ian out on 2 pitches and Hunter on one pitch that looked like a ball to me.

Now Rick is losing it. Oh, my.

One of the few times I get to watch live and they are messing it up big time.

Enjoy it. It’s not over yet.

Going short in the bullpen last Sunday is coming back with a revenge.

Well, if Paxton pitches the way he has been and the Tigers hit the way they have been, this game is already over. What a disappointment. Good night.

Venezuelan TV:Anibal l could be back by early september

Well, we get to see what this team is made of this weekend….as long as Nathan & Joba stay in the pen. Those two Blow any of these 3 games and we can just watch the M’s sail off into the playoffs

Well…can’t pitch. .and your fielding is crappy,..you can’t hit ..it doesn’t lead to winning every single time. 1 step forward and 2 steps back.

I thought we were on the road to recovery….That last relief stint ruined Porcello’s rhythm
as a starter.

..If you can remember, whenever Porcello
is used for relief purposes, even going back to the playoffs against Boston…
he gets shelled…the same thing happened in that 19 inning fiasco which
he took the loss..he got shelled…
.please don’t use him in relief……use Kelly.!
Maybe next year…. KC ‘s got it going….they just look sharper and hungrier.

they look sharp today. in october they will not look sharp. bet the farm on it.

is miggy getting his power back?

His problem are with LHP

The needed an OF with a bat. Where do you put him? There are three spot to upgrade

This was a game they needed if there was any chance of winning the series. Porcello sucked, the hitting was beyond poor. So tired of this scene.

Okay well, I’m going to nominate this one as the worst game of the year, unless anyone can think of another. That was a really poor performance.

They have a chance tomorrow, Felix never has run support: he allows 1 and lose

Welp, shaky 9th for Johnson. 24 pitches, 15 strikes, 1 IP, 2 H, 1 ER, WP, 1 K. FB 93-94 mph, sinker 89, curve 79-81 mph (1 of 2).
Wagner

Long story short: Johnson struggled w/ command of FB around strike zone, got swing-misses on curve (but it wasn’t close to zone). Wagner too

Let’s lay the blame where it should be… on Dombrowski. Tigers lost starting SS in spring and had to sacrifice to find a replacement. Gave up too much for pretty much nothing. He had a great winter getting Davis and Kinsler and then JD Martinez, but then he blew it by giving up Jackson and Smyly for Price. He destroyed the aura of this team and has hand-cuffed Ausmus with little options. Throwing Carrera into this mess in a pennant race was just plain wrong. And not getting bullpen help when it became obvious that Nathan, Joba and Coke are suspect doesn’t make sense. If they want to win this year, then the trade ruined that. I could go on, but the collapse of this team was Dombrowski’s fault….. I am not a Tiger basher…. I have been a Tiger fan since the late 1950’s and I have to tell you that this fiasco of a season is far worse than 2003.

nicely said…I guess all we can do now is watch the scoreboard…sad, I think
should get a life already…..

There is alot of merit in what Dennis wrote . Still have a hard time wondering why they let Jackson go . The bullpen is still leaking while the offense does not show up some days . With 6 weeks left in the season things gotta change and soon.

Complacent is about all I can think of to describe this team. They put you to sleep.

1. Mercedes pitched like one.
2. Miggy had a little more zap in the bat tonight.
3. We didn’t use Nathan.
Fall behind a better than average starter, and this team is in trouble always.
Kinsler was out of it tonight. So was Tori, and as much as I like Doc, we’ve seen about all the offense we can garner from him. I just don’t like Rags in the leadoff spot, triple or no triple. He’s better at the bottom. If Price gives up two tomorrow, he loses.

No fire……

Okay, there are a number of us here who have been Tiger fans since the late 1950s.
If acquiring Soria isn’t getting bullpen help, what is?
If you want to question a trade, I’d start with the Fister deal myself.

Completely agree. Problem with this team it’s just not one problem. …it’s the offense , the defense and the pen. And there was a stretch when the starters stunk.

Hard to take these guys seriously

Porcello refused to use the 19-inning rotation mess as an excuse. Rick is a standup guy. I think we all know it did effect his start tonight. He couldn’t get anything down in the zone.
There have been times during those marathon games when I think it’s better to just lose the damn thing than to dip into your rotation. This one resulted in two minor league call up starts and a poor performance by a regular starter. Not worth that one chance for a win. Of course, you can’t lose a game on purpose.

KC 6 Minn 5….Tigers out Game and half….it’s going to get worse, folks
By the way, what’s Dombrowski doing these days, what’a bum!….
Hunter looks like he can’t wait to get home and watch his son plat at Notre Dame.
shows or least it appears he rather not be there…swinging at some dumb pitches.

I agree with Rich, Porcello is a stand up guy, so glad he is still a Tiger.
Regarding the moves this year by DD, they seem to be knee jerk reactions. I wonder if he even has a plan as to the kind of team he wants to put on the field.
Silly me, I still won’t give up hope.

If Price beats Felix Tiger fans will revive.
If it goes the other way, the despair we hear today will pale in comparison.
Why can’t this team hit?

Had the same thought, Dan. Felix was walking around like he owned the joint.

Because they look complacent, Dan. I’m just not feelin it from this team. They don’t seem to have the burning desire that Mr.Ilitch has. Mr D has put the players in place to win now. But, if they don’t give a crap, he might as well sell them off. These guys are not playing with playoff aspirations. I’ll be shocked if they win the division.

They want their vacations to exotic locations sooner rather than later. How could you want that more than winning your division, making the playoffs, and/or winning a World Series. Complacency!

Kathy I think that is an unfair characterization, but to each their own.

ya, i don’t think it’s complacency, but more of ‘caring too much’.
trying too hard can lead to those embarassing errors in the field and pressing when at bat. they’re getting frustrated & kind of flailing around trying to find the quick fix.
they need a good couple solid wins under their belt to relax and get their groove & swagger back. today would be a good start! … fingers crossed.

Don’t look now but Dixon Machado is hitting .278
BTW, it is time to bring up McCann. If not now then in 2 weeks.

I posted a link to an article where he his future is analyzed in the other thread. He showed some power

One method of winning a game: a double with bases loaded scores 3 to cap a 5 run inning. With a 5-3 lead in the ninth, score an add-on run. The closer then struggles, giving up 2, but the add-on run is the difference and he’s shaking hands after the 6-5 win.
That’s what KC did last night. They were held scoreless for 7 of the 9 innings.

“Stat of the Day: Trade candidate Alex Rios saved an MLB-best 76 runs in RF from ’04-’12, but has been 10 runs below avg over the past 2 yrs”
He is available and would clear waivers, They could replace JD with him

Neil Weimberg:
Cabrera only has a 138 wRC+ over the last calendar year with 4.3 WAR. Can someone please give him whatever muscle tissue he needs?

Miguel Cabrera, hurt last year and recovering still, has been the 17th best hitter in baseball since last August 15th.

His OPS over the last 58 games is .812. He’s still a very good hitter but the Detroit offense is kind of keyed on him having bigger results.

Why?

Ah, a philosophical question. :) You mean why trade for Rios?

Yes.

A MLB bat. His defense cant be worse than the incumbents

They will make the playoff with current staff? probably yes. How far will they go? not so deep.

He is injured but not on DL. When he is on, he is good, he is clutch

Sherman about Castillo:
“But chance to sign 27-yr-old without draft compensation means non-contenders bidding, too. #Yankees #Redsox #Tigers viewed as major players”.
I guess everyone here will get it , but he is not saying the Tigers are not contenders

I’m sure the stats will show an upgrade, so sure, lets further gut the soul of the team. We’ll add a bunch of waiver clearers and win the division. Sorry, getting cynical. Can’t help myself.

If they are on win now mode, time to double down.
“The Tigers have baseball’s second best offense and second best rotation by FIP-. Why aren’t they better? Bullpen and http://cdn.fangraphs.com/library/wp-content/uploads/2014/08/dropball0002_1.gif … “

If we were to acquire an outfielder, I think it needs to be a guy who can hit it out of the park. That guy probably doesn’t exist.

Matt Kemp ,but the Dodgers wisely want to keep him and is way off the Tigers radar and means

I’d replace RD before JD. Was wondering why you thought JD would logically be replaced. Of course if RD was gone or benched, Carrera has to get full time CF. Somebody has to do it. Jackson’s gone. I don’t trust RD’s overall play to be honest with you. Hunter’s an offensive weapon when he’s patient and concentrating. You’re right, the OF is weak when you look at all aspects of play. Has to rank near the bottom. If Rios were added, I’d subtract RD.

Davis is a natural CF signed for two years . I have watched Carrera doing here in Venezuela plays like that against the Yankees for a while but MLB seems to be, sometimes, above his head.Of course, he is LH and that gives him some edge.

We’ve been doubling down for the entire season. Good thing it’s not poker.

I feel like I need to join Gamblers Anonymous by association.

Good one, Marty 2.
.

It looks like I’m in a minority, but I haven’t seen anything not to like about Rajai Davis. He’s done everything he was supposed to and maybe more. He is not under performing, and he has much needed big league experience. Am I missing something?

Ladies and gentlemen, Rusney Castillo.

Comes with a rap soundtrack if nothing else.

I didn’t intend to embed that video. I just pasted a link and it happened.

I want the Rusney guy, but otherwise I think the tigers should just stand pat as far as positional players are concerned. Bullpen could add a piece though.
