Wednesday’s lineups: Tigers at Yankees

As expected, no Torii Hunter in the Tigers lineup tonight, which means Brad Ausmus had to put a left-handed hitter (Ezequiel Carrera) in his outfield against Chris Capuano. That actually might not be a bad thing, considering Capuano has reverse splits going — .306 average/.814 OPS allowed to left-handed hitters, .248/.726 against righties. For his career, though, right-handed batters are hitting 40 points higher off Capuano than left-handed hitters.

In the infield, Eugenio Suarez is out again. Andrew Romine gets the start as he tries to further his small-sample success off lefties (10-for-33 with a double).

TIGERS (career numbers off Capuano)

  1. Rajai Davis, LF (3-for-5, 2 doubles, walk, K)
  2. Ian Kinsler, 2B (2-for-2, HR, walk)
  3. Miguel Cabrera, 1B (9-for-23, double, 4 HR, 9 K’s)
  4. Victor Martinez, DH (3-for-7, HR, 2 K’s)
  5. J.D. Martinez, RF (0-for-2, walk, K)
  6. Nick Castellanos, 3B (0-for-1, K)
  7. Bryan Holaday, C (1-for-1, triple)
  8. Andrew Romine, SS (0-for-1, K)
  9. Ezequiel Carrera, CF

P: Justin Verlander

YANKEES (career numbers vs. Verlander)

  1. Brett Gardner, CF (5-for-23, double, 3 walks, 4 K’s)
  2. Derek Jeter, SS (16-for-44, double, HR, 4 walks, 10 K’s)
  3. Jacoby Ellsbury, CF (6-for-26, 2 doubles, 2 walks, 2 K’s)
  4. Mark Teixeira, 1B (3-for-38, HR, 5 walks, 12 K’s)
  5. Carlos Beltran, DH (1-for-7, 2 K’s)
  6. Brian McCann, C (1-for-5, double, walk, K)
  7. Chase Headley, 3B (2-for-6, double, 4 K’s)
  8. Stephen Drew, 2B (4-for-18, double, walk, 11 K’s)
  9. Martin Prado, RF (3-for-6, 2 walks)

P: Chris Capuano

None available to PH , I guess

Iott;
Eugenio Suarez out of lineup due to knee. Said: “Maybe tomorrow.”

Tiger batters who faced Capuano have had good success. But since he is now a Yankee, will they be intimidated by his wicked over-powering pitches? Let’s have more hitting and scoring tonight, Tigers. Never sure which JV will show up.

I have to say, the Yankees are getting some good pitching performances so far this week. Teams have been getting up for Detroit. I’d never seen that guy who drilled Hunter. Wow, big arm.

Thought the same thing, Rich. Throwing 100mph heat. Their whole BP looked pretty good with maybe the exception of the one who threw a little wild.
.
Go Tiger!!!!!!

Betances? he has been the talk of the town for while with Bunuelos and Pineda

half of his outs with SO ,13.9/9

ESPN:
“Miguel Cabrera tiene un promedio de 311. Hasta el 5 de agosto tenía .359 en 2013, .325 en 2012 y .315 en 2011 (campeón bate 2011-13)”
Miguel Cabrera hitting 311. Until August 5 he had 359 in 2012, 325 in 2012 and 315 in 2011( Champion bat 2011-13)

The Tigers facing too many LHP

Tiger starters doing as well as can be expected so far. So then, are Yankee pitchers that good or are Tigers’ batters sleepwalking?

I hope that was JV’s bad inning. The 4th- a hit and a walk.

Tigers are not hitting as a team. They don’t seem to be “connected” to each other in the lineup.
I hate to say it but JV is throwing like an ACE!

FIP before today 4.00.
Before May 25,his 11 th start his ERA was 3.55
It was just a matter of time.

The sandbox hits again

The 5th was a bit worse. JV gave up a HR to a .234 hitter. Now it’s a high pitch count. But come on, Tiger batters. You can’t expect a pitcher to throw a shutout so your anemic 1 or 2 runs can win the game.

Price did the same last night. Headly is a good hitter 265 /754 with 31 Hr in a season playing at the worst park for a hitter in MLB

HR , change-up. Single , curve.

Castellanos post ASG:.239.314.435.749. Last 10, 161

Very strange. 2 hits each by Romine and Carrera but 6 other batters can do nothing. Prove me wrong, Davis.

CLUNK!

Change up again???

There it goes. Just can’t believe it.

QS, 2 runs allowed. This on the offense

Another 2-1 loss? Ian, Miggy, Victor, JD have to do something this inning.

Tigers offense is MIA again . Maybe Miggy and VMART can come alive !!!

Well just got home…..I guess the tigers hitting woes are in full force.

game aint over yet, ya’ll.

promptly cabby gets over to 3rd, 1 out.

Seriously JD……a stinking sac fly was all you needed.

What a stinking waste. Great hitting boys.

Too many blind squirrels tonight.

Ian one-pitch wonder. Then Yankees try to give it away. A walk, 2 errors. But Tigers won’t take it. JD and Casty = F-i-z-z-l-e. Another poor offensive showing.

Well if it wasn’t over before it sure is now……..

And now a BP blow-up. Game over, fans.

Terrible.

Tigers real good at taking themselves out of striking distance….all year. Can’t control the bleeding. 9-11 since allstar break and some teams played that weren’t that great… Ho hum baseball.

Green lighting relatively inexperienced hitters on 3-0 counts and using Hardy in a 2-1 game both head scratchers. Guess the thinking was we’re not going to score off Robertson anyway. Okay, go for the split. Again.

Our BP isn’t deep enough and we struggle against good pitching.

What cast off pitcher will stymie them tomorrow.

Hardy has been pretty good this year it’s not having someone else up after giving up a hit after the first runners get on. For a catcher I sure don’t get his use of the pen…shouldn’t an ex catcher have a better feel? But what it really comes down to here is the big boys not doing anything at the plate.

Since May 18, Tigers 35-37. That’s nearly half a season’s worth. That’s what the big picture says.

Not even playing .500 ball?

Three straight games, and the blame was not on the starters. This is becoming the norm, and unless corrected, post season will be nil or very short. As mentioned above, the Yanks tried with everything in them to give it away, and we refused. Simply put, this was a lack of professional hitting; you needed a fly ball to tie the game for goodness sakes! Julio is lost along with Rookie 1, Miggy, Kinsler, et al. It’s a shame when the weakest hitter on the team has two solid hits again tonight. Price is depressed after seeing this hitting lineup.
1. JV pitched a neat game.
2. Romine showed up to play.
3. Carrera leaves Rags behind in a race to first.

Why DD let Thorton pass? Instead signed two relievers unable to pitch. JH not healthy and JJ released by two teams

DD not getting an experienced lefty for the pen borders on negligence
Gotta see the whole picture

Why the Tigers are still in first place is because the teams in Central beat up on each other…while the Tigers continue to play below .500 ball.
Ausmus lost this game tonight..allowing both hitters to swing in 3-0 counts. which would have loaded the bases…Yankee announcers keep on referring as to how well they’re playing against 3 Cy Young pitchers(again and again)….Yankees had 4 errors and still won, what does that tell you? Miguel gets nearly $50,000 per at bat,
can you dig it? Doesn’t that hurt just a little? How does an umpire continue to
blow calls in which he’s right on top of?….The one I’m referring to went in favor
of the Yankees. at home plate. The Yankee announcers keep referring to
the Tiger lineup as powerful….maybe in salary….
note… Carrera brings a ray of light to the team, keep him in there!
There’s no life to this team…how about trying to scratch out a run?????

I just woke up to find out KC isnt losing only three and a half back now. Creeping back in, tigers better figure out something soon.

I don’t like how the lead has dwindled in the division. None of our starters wants to be considered the 5th starter – great pitching by JV last night. How on earth can we only score 1 run when the Yankees have 4 errors?

Last night it was two guys swinging 3-0 who don’t know how to do it. Something different every night.
My question is how Romine has been our best hitter in NY.

The dog days are here. let’s get this team fired up. Hey Dan, looks like they are getting into polite baseball. Let’s see some excitement! Go Tigers!

Lynn Henning thinks McCann will be called up in september and replace Holaday in October. If so,why wait? Avila debuted in August 6 2009 and became the starter shortly after. Could it be done again?

Lineup at NYY: Davis 7, Carrera 8, Kinsler 4, V. Martinez DH, J. Martinez 9, Kelly 3, Castellanos 5, Avila 2, Romine 6. Porcello starting.

Scheduled day off

I heard on the radio that they think Miguel has tweaked something….and he is denying it.

When he slid at 3b , Rand checked him.He looked on pain the night before, the inability to bend to field the grounder
Gage:
“Miggy not starting vs. #Yankees – Ausmus intended to give him a day game off on this 3-city trip and today is it”

Ps…pretty whimpy lineup I guess there is no urgency …Ala 2009 when we had a 4 game lead with 5 games to go and they start Figeroa on Saturday to get there rotation ready for playoffs, Miguel lands in jail and we play a game 163. You know the rest.

If we keep hitting like this we are going to need a NEW fanbase:

http://www.ctvnews.ca/sci-tech/korean-baseball-team-fills-stands-with-fanbots-1.1936686

If they were really in win now mode, they would try to get Kemp
He is Verlander´s equivalent for the Dodgers( close to MVP, signed a huge contract, dated Rihanna , got injured, fans blamed Rihanna ) he can hit and his lack of defense is a fit for team that played Young

this is not 2009, korea nor LA
