Sunday’s lineups: Tigers vs. Rockies

The Rockies are starting a left-handed pitcher for the 19th consecutive game. The Tigers are starting Alex Avila against a lefty for the second straight game. Avila’s three-hit game last night (two hits off Tyler Matzek, the third off ageless righty LaTroy Hawkins) didn’t hurt.

“I didn’t want Alex to not play three games,” Brad Ausmus said last night. “I was toying with the idea of Holaday playing the first and third game of the series, and it crossed my mind I could play him all three, but I just decided I didn’t want to keep Alex out that long. And then he made me look good by getting three hits.”

That said, Avila will have his work cut out against Jorge De La Rosa, who’s allowing a mere .183 average against left-handed hitters this year with 34 strikeouts in 125 plate appearances. However, De La Rosa has a bizarre home-road split for a Rockies starting pitcher: He’s 7-2 with a 3.43 ERA at Coors Field, but 4-4 with a 5.28 ERA on the road. He’s allowing a .754 OPS away from the Rocky Mountain air, compared with .687 at home.

TIGERS (career numbers vs. De La Rosa)

  1. Rajai Davis, CF (0-for-3, walk, K)
  2. Ian Kinsler, 2B (0-for-3, K)

  4. Victor Martinez, DH (4-for-12, 4 walks)
  5. Torii Hunter, RF (3-for-13, 2 doubles, HR, walk, 2 K’s)
  6. J.D. Martinez, LF (2-for-3, double, K)
  7. Nick Castellanos, 3B
  8. Alex Avila, C
  9. Eugenio Suarez, SS

ROCKIES (career numbers off Sanchez)

  5. Drew Stubbs, CF (2-for-8, double, 4 K’s)
  6. Jason Pridie, LF (0-for-0, sacrifice bunt)

I really didn’t understand a word Brad said in that paragraph about Avila. Heard it last night on the postgame show and went “huh?”
.
Go Tigers!!

It would have been worse if Brad had said “I didn’t not want Alex to play three games.”

Sanchez should dominate this lineup. No Tulo, CarGo, Cuddyer, Blackmon, or Dickerson.

No Blackmon or Dickerson either?
Seems like a very logical time to play Doc. Day after night in this horribly long stretch without any days off.

I messed that up. I confused Dickerson with Culberson. My bad.

I see Andy Oliver is now a relief pitcher. Gives up a hit only every two innings which is remarkable. Still walking guys at a rate of over 5 per 9 innings though.

I hope DD has noticed the Real McCoy too. This LHP relief situation is not going to fix itself internally.

Hoping Sanchez has a good outing today and that the Tigers give him some run support!!
.
Checked in on Austin and Drew last night. Austin had a good game with a couple hits and Drew was with his pitching coaches and then had to leave to be fitted for a tuxedo because they were headed out for a road series. They’ll be OK.

For the life of me, I just don’t understand why Doc isn’t catching today. Avila got beat up pretty bad last night. It is painful to watch.

I had expected to see Doc in the lineup also . Hard to figure out Ausmus at times isn’t it ??

And why do they keep putting the camera in the Rockies dugout and talking about the Rockies. Enough already! I don’t want the Rockies to win.

Does anyone think V-Mart might have found his swing again?

Anibal 16 batters, 1 hit, no walks, 7 SO. Great! Now he’ll be facing some for the 3rd time. Has that been when his problems start?

Miggy singles to the pitcher. Must have been a bullet.

Dribbler off the end of the bat that bounce away from the pitcher and he couldn’t pick it up.

TY Mayo. I’m on Gameday so I can’t see that.
.
Crucial inning coming for Anibal. Has been having trouble going deep. But which BP pitcher do we trust?

Let’s hope the BP can win and retain the SO.

Excellent pitching by Anibal. 12 strikeouts!

Tigers 53-3 when winning after 7

So some of those blown saves we must of come back and won

Really good weekend.

53-3? I can hardly believe that with all the BP troubles. When do they play the Rockies again? LOL.

Good outing for Sanchez today and a clean sweep of the Rockies . Onto a very long road trip for the Tigers . Sure looks like V Mart has found his swing again . Nice to see Comerica packed again today .

Not often I demand a sweep, but that’s what you do to a team in that condition.
Should be a fun week in NY.

Carolina Guillen ESPN:
12 ponches y cero boletos en una salida no se ve todos los días. Anibal Sánchez es el 4to abridor de Detroit que lo logra en 40 años #MLB
12 K and 0 Walks in an outing is not an everyday occurrence. Anibal is the 4th starter to do that in 40 years

less impressive when you know the other three are Scherzer, Verlander and Morris

More impressive!

Wow–very, very encouraging to see the Surgeon operate today. Fantastic.

Notice since the Price trade we’ve seen 3 well pitched games, nobody wants to be the guy to go to the pen in the post season.

You must mean 4th TIGER pitcher to do that in last 40 years. Certainly there was someone else from another team who did it?

4to abridor( starter) de Detroit. I forgot the translation of that part. . But Beck has a different information

Poor ol’ Drew Smyly had to run out to get a tuxedo for Joe Madden’s James Bond formal themed road trip. Must be wondering what he’s gotten into.
Conversely, Price has had to update his wardrobe to keep up with Justin Verlander and T. Hunt.
In other unimportant matters……….

1 Sanchez was crisp as fresh lettuce today.
2. M&M starting to work in tandem.
3. Got the lead early. Neve looked back.
We will. Get three of four on the road from the those Bronx Guys.
Impressive pitching during this series.

The Yankee series is going to be interesting…Colorado was a tune-up(we should’of
beat them anyway…now for the tough games ahead,..watching KC today after the
Tiger win….they are tough. Yes we’ve got the starters….but can we hit the good pitching? Just a thought(as usual)
