Friday’s lineups: Tigers vs. Rockies

CoPa 003

The first game of life without Austin Jackson has Rajai Davis in center field and batting leadoff against lefty Franklin Morales. Bryan Holaday gets the start behind the plate for Justin Verlander. Interestingly, Verlander has had better success against hitters with Holaday catching than with Avila catching, but it’s a relatively small sample size (114 plate appearances with Holaday catching, compared with 511 PAs with Avila). On the Rockies side, D.J. LeMahieu gets the start at second base close to home. The Brother Rice graduate is expected to have a pretty big contingent of alumni in attendance this weekend.

TIGERS (career numbers off Morales)

  1. Rajai Davis, CF (4-for-7, double, 2 walks, K)
  2. Ian Kinsler, 2B (1-for-2)
  3. Miguel Cabrera, 1B (1-for-4, walk)
  4. Victor Martinez, DH (3-for-4, double, walk)
  5. Torii Hunter, RF (2-for-4, K)
  6. J.D. Martinez, LF
  7. Nick Castellanos, 3B
  8. Bryan Holaday, C
  9. Eugenio Suarez, SS

P: Justin Verlander

ROCKIES (career numbers against Verlander)

  1. Charlie Blackmon, LF (1-for-3)
  2. Corey Dickerson, DH
  3. Nolan Arenado, 3B
  4. Justin Morneau, 1B (12-for-49, 5 doubles, 2 HR, 8 walks, 15 K’s)
  5. Carlos Gonzalez, RF (0-for-4)
  6. Drew Stubbs, CF (2-for-5, K)
  7. Wilin Rosario, C
  8. Josh Rutledge, SS
  9. D.J. LeMahieu, 2B

P: Franklin Morales

My comment on this is why NOT bat Kinsler leadoff to see if THAT will get him going? He is hitting about .333 there.
Then Rajai to cause some consternation with the odd bunt and consequent pressure on the opposing defense.
This season now boils down to Kinsler getting it going and Avila at least supplying the odd home run to crush the pitchers’ hopes as they get into the easy part of the lineup.

I would think it is also time to promote Stephen Moya. He needs AAAA pitching now as he has pretty much shown he can handle the level he is at now. It may also be an idea to keep him close to Detroit for roster expansion.
Nice to see Lennerton coming alive again.
How long to the Tigers go with Brandon Douglas in Toledo?
Devon Travis ready for the jump?
Very glad to see DD keep both of those guys. Gotta give him credit for that.

Miggy a strikeout victim in the first . Hope JV can keep runners off the bases .

AJax with the SO in his 1st ab with the Mariners.

275 vs LHP. He does have problems vs LHP

What I’ve been saying: Torii comes up with two men on and nobody out, and promptly strikes out. Then JD hits into a twin killing. There you go, the absolute lack of timely and clutch hitting. This has been killing them. It sucks the sap out of the tree.

OMG, these pathetic bats. How can we win the division if we can’t hit?

Holaday making his case

Ian hits and this is a different team.
Big inning for JV. And literally, the 6th is usually a big inning for JV.
Sure would like to have the guy throw like an “ACE” tonight.
I have several reasons for thinking like that GK!

Sometimes I just can’t believe the pitch selection with JV on the mound. Fastball to Blacckmon on a 1-2 pitch?
Bury the slider on his left ankle my friend.

Castellanos is gonna be a monster once he learns how to keep from elevating his off-field hits. The stroke is there, the timing is there, the power is there but the uppercut is keeping him from the success he will experience eventually.

Is 3 enough?

Best game JV has trown in a while. Bossmus has to recognize this and make sure he leaves with a good taste in his mouth.
If it means the middle of the 7th then so be it.

Oh Oh. 3 is not enough?

Apparently I am a better observer of what is going to happen than Brad is. He should have taken JV out before this all went south.
Poor throw by Casty.

Casty thinks he’s Manny Machado. No.

That is on the defense( or lack of it)

In Casty’s defense—-Doc was out of position, actually WAY out of position. He was not expecting the throw home and reacted to the throw instead of anticipating it.

He cant block home without the ball

Seems like Casty should have been able to get DP there.

The out at second, yes. The runner going to first ?doubt so

Whew! I thought JV was going to blow it all. 2 runs is bad enough when they only have 3.

Didn’t need to block anything, he just needed to be standing in front of the plate and not behind it. Take another look. I think you will see what I’m talking about.

Blackmon cant hit the fastball. The book on him

If I am Brad I bring Soria in for the 8th. Sorry Joba, it’s time.

Casty needs to start pulling the ball again. Last time he did he went on a tear of 3 hit games.

One more run helps. Is it just me or have they not scored very much in the late innings? Wasted a great chance to really break the game open.

This is the best way to improve the bullpen. Many innings but low pitching count

Huge hit by Victor. That’s what we need.

Late in the game, protect the lines… fundamentals. JV pitching well the defense failing him

Bad move Brad. JV and pitch count were excellent but don’t get carried away.

Well Brad got away with one IMO.
This is a must win game for the Detroit Tigers. A blown save here by Nathan sends everybody scrambling for solutions, answers explanations.

If it is Nathan, when did he last pitch? Seems like when he sits too long, he loses it.

Right move by Brad but wrong position. Bring Ezeqiel in for Davis but don’t remove JD—remove Torii.

oh, no. First batter on base.

Sorry, I missed Stubbs’ out.

I’m going to start screaming.

No No Not Blackmon.

That was too close for comfort. Blackmon a .300 hitter with 14 HR and 55 RBI as the lead run. Whew!

It was a must win. JV did his job, very encouraging. Davis did his job very well today. I do hope the stolen bases become part of the plan again though.
Doc, other than the throw from Casty, had a very intelligent game.
Victor showed some leadership, and Ian contributed.

Justin was terrific…………and, he did it without Avila.

That is exactly how we’re going to have to win games. Like a blueprint even. Four runs, with our pitching potential, should get the W.

Was that really JV’s best game this whole year? Hard to believe.
.
Davis was involved in all 4 runs as AJ’s replacement. Can he keep that up? Even half of it? Maybe tomorrow Carrera vs a RHP but keep Davis in the game somehow.

IMO Brad can’t afford to play Davis only against lefties now.

1. JV pitches a solid 8 with no walks.
2. Rags comes through in the leadoff spot.
3. Add on run from Victor was BiGGGGGG!

Kudos to Ian, and to Joe. He still had decent stuff tonight. Don’t think Rookie 1 would have gotten the DP. So the run probably scores either way. JV’s velocity was okay, and he mixed his pitches well. Props to Doc for calling a good game. Time to get on a good streak. When does the Price is Right get into town? Anxious to see him throw as a Tiger.

Price is Right(?) arrives tomorrow and will probably pitch one of the games in Yankee Stadium, a place he’s very familiar with.

If he takes drews spot he should start Tuesday. And then his second start would be Sunday in Toronto. And that makes me very happy because that is the game I am going to next weekend when they are here in Toronto. Looking forward to it. Yanks and jays are probably thinking “man, I thought he was traded out of the division”. :)
.
Go Tigers.
.
— Bob

Thinking about going to Toronto next Sunday for the game.

That should be a great series to watch . The traffic there is so bad allow extra time to get around .

The Rockies will use LH starters in every game? Doesn’t look good for Carrera to get any starts.

I can’t do Toronto this year because my wife just started a new job and can’t get the time yet. It was going to be part of a larger trip. Maybe next year.

Verlander:FIP 4.00 ERA 4.66 That 0.66 is on the defense like last night.
The ball that fell between JD and Suarez. JD had the ball in front of him, he had to charge that ball , it was his play.
The foul ball that Cabrera chased ,he is not fast enough, where was Kinsler?
Once Iglesias comes back, The Tigers could consider moving Castellanos to the OF. That the place to hide below average fielders.
Omar could remember him that you must cover the lines late in the games. That 2b should had to be a single that late
Nathan was lucky , the batters were swinging at pretty bad pitches. He was not fooling them, they were too impatient.

There is also the possibility that Castellanos can improve his defense at his age. I don’t think he’s ever going to the OF.
The infield defense can and should be set by the manager or coaches. If Nick is out of position, they move him. Or should.

Someone is unaware of The Trade:

“f Scherzer leaves Detroit, the Yankees will have stiff competition for Lester from the Tigers. That means the Bombers would have to take a run at Scherzer, who is a better pitcher than Lester with more dynamic stuff. “

I dont know in the USA but here we will have two of the games vs the Yankees and one vs the Pirates on ESPN. They are having polls to choose the game they will show and the Tigers won twice ( the first game vs NYY was already scheduled).

kinsler leading off :332 /.363/ .500/.863 but 190/489 as first batter of the game. He better bats leadoff. Davis cant steal bases and take the bat form Miguel and Victor hands. That maybe doesnt matter, Kinsler had leaded-off an inning 126 times while Miguel has done that 103 times batting 3rd . But it is bad baseball
Kinsler, Hunter, Miguel, VMart, JD, Castellanos, Avila/Holaday, Suarez, Davis/Carrera.

Nick generally makes the plays within 1 step either way but his reaction time and 1st step is really really slow. Miggy is much quicker laterally than Nick is. I don’t know if that is something that can be improved much.

The catcher unlike Holaday was ahead of home. MLB now says it was a wrong call but the review umps did not think the same then

Those guys in New York really blew that call! That call should be re-reversed and the game replayed from that point forward. If they “really want to get things right.”

Lineup vs. COL: Davis 8, Kinsler 4, Cabrera 3, V. Martinez DH, Hunter 9, J. Martinez 7, Castellanos 5, Avila 2, Suarez 6. Porcello comienza.

They certainly need to get that collision rule straightened out before the games get REALLY important. A PR disaster looms.
I don’t think that call should even be reviewable.

I mean, they’re reviewing a rules interpretation, not the play itself.
