Friday’s lineups: Tigers at Angels

J.D. Martinez returns to the Tigers lineup for the first time since Tuesday and just his second start since Sunday. Rajai Davis is the odd man out in the Tigers outfield as a result. Other than that, it’s a pretty standard lineup against Tyler Skaggs, a pitcher the Tigers haven’t faced before.

Busy day tomorrow and a early morning don’t think I’ll make it for the whole game.

I just don’t understand the fascination management has with Alex Avila.
Is there a doctor in the house?

No doctor in the house, just his daddy in the front office.

Another tiger rally killed by AA. Did everyone moan when he walked up to the plate like I did? Why oh why is he even in the lineup against a LH starting pitcher???

Smyly looking good. Tiger batters working Skaggs well. Got him up to 42 pitches in just 2 innings.

Just saw a nice documentary on the Portland Maveriks. (Early 70′s independent minor league team.) Not sure Avila would have made there squad.

Smyly strikes out 7 of first 9 batters. Time to give him support.

Wow! Those RF homers of Miggy’s! Can we dare to dream his power is coming back?
Meanwhile, down on the farm. Moys clobbered his 26th and 82 RBI. I would think they will be calling him up to Toledo after the trading deadline.

Is Moya a righty or lefty?

Miggy must be feeling better. (See his comment at the All-Star game.) If only Suarez had still been on base.
.
Who would Moya replace?

Smyly has now struck out 8. The only one he didn’t was Hamilton who is gone already. If I recall correctly. Hamilton was a one-pitch soft dribbler to Smyly for an out.

Time for some runs, Tigers. It would be extremely amazing if Drew shut out the Angels.

AA gets a grade of F. First bad thing I’ve said tonight.

Alex? Why do they refuse to play Holaday? Especially against a lefty. He can’t do worse?

I don’t think AA is even hitting his weight any longer. He has more whiffs than Miggy has RBIs.
Brad has to start thinking more about this.

Holaday is batting against LH even worse and the pitchers has bad numbers vs LHB, Still, I would play Holaday

Great to see Drew show some emotion. Our guys are not looking terrific tonight so let’s hope we can cobble a couple of runs against their bullpen

31 SO in 72 AB vs LH for Avila

Victor is wayyy overdue. Has he been stuck on 21 and 56 since the ASB?

That’s a cool .430 average

Smyly pitching great but this one is lookin’ iffy tonight.

Ya his counterparts aren’t giving him anything and against a pretty bad pitcher.

Good night, Tiger fans. I am tired, retired and will sleep better knowing they are ahead in the game even after Torii’s disappointing at-bat.

After getting hosed on that 3-1 pitch, Trout struck himself out. Too bad Smyly couldn’t snag that comeback single.
Should see Soria tonight.

Other than Porcello that really isn’t a strength of our starting pitching staff, fielding their position that is. Smyly pitched a heck of a game too bad his teammates don’t get him any run support. There is always a guy on a team and I feel like it’s Smyly this year.

There was another pitch in that Ab which looked like a strike which wasn’t called so boo hoo for Trout.

Pitch he just called Castellanos out on wasn’t a strike either …….guy has had a big. Strike zone all night.

It’s usually a mistake to bring back Al for a second inning.

Well, California working a miracle in the bullpen

Some kind of pitching tonight. Good series so far.

1. Cy Smyly shows a wicked curve. There is some great potential.
2. Never out of the game. One swing would have tied it.
3. Miggy’s swing to right field. Another five games and he’ll be at .320.
Not much offense; Drew showed a nice skill set tonight. Rotation is rounding into shape. Still need one of the next two.

Tough one, especially for you EDT zoners. You folks are real fans.
You could see Smyly fading, not by much but enough to know they were gonna get to him. Started missing where he was hitting and falling behind in the count.
Another one of those games where our hitting collapsed. Not sure how this happens so frequently on a team with veteran hitters like we have.
Kind of a shame Smyly had to lose this one but we all knew that one run wouldn’t do it and that more than one run (for us) didn’t look possible.

We still need Tony Sipp and Rod was right–wouldn’t it have made perfect sense to utilize Rajai as a PR for Torii?

GK-Moya is a LHB. Illinois-I don’t expect him to replace anybody on the Tiger roster. I just think he will be promoted to Toledo as he has little to prove in AA (where AA should be!) and face AAA & AAAA pitchers. I would expect he will be a September call-up.

Looking forward to seeing Doc on Sunday as there is no possible way Bossmaus can have the nerve to play him against a southpaw on a getaway day after a night game.

I was at the game tonight. Best part of the evening? The drunk toothless (literally) Angel fan who probably didn’t belong in the seat he was in, chanting ‘MIGGY IS OVERRATED’ just before he smashed that ball to right field.
.
Next time he came up, he just booed instead.
.
Angel fans had a sustained multi-deck wave that went on for what seemed like two innings. You could sense they were bored with it but kept it alive anyways.

way to represent the D on the West Coast Mike

The hottest hitter against lefties (.386) and he rides the pine. Why?

And when Dirks comes back, there’s rally going to be a conundrum. Like I said before, if you are not .going to use Raji Davis properly, then just trade him. The hottest hitter against lefties and he sits. Does not make sense. Utterly ridiculous.

And last night there were less reasons since the pitcher has reverse splits

Splits significant enough to play Avila but no Davis

Rajai is getting he short end of the stick and has all year. I’m not particularly wild about RD but he has shown he deserves to play. He is a guy that can ignite a team. In the last month we have seen so very little of that. It is up to him to make the most of any opportunity he is given. I’d play him ahead of Torii. I’d give a slight edge to JD. Austin right now is dangerous and he is the only guy in that OF that should be guaranteed a start every game.
